+1. Peppers only has a few years left in the league. I don't see any reason to give up more than what we did for Jenkins. Maybe two players. Maybe two picks/ a pick and a player(nothing above a 2nd). At 30 years old, his asking price should be nowhere near as high as that.
I would much rather try and sign Richard Seymour, if we could free up some spot. Both are 30 but Seymour's health and position suggest he'll be the better long term investment. A line with Seymour and Jenkins would be dominant. Putting Peppers in a scheme he's never played in is a bit dicey. You're paying for Julius Peppers 4-3 end to get Julius Peppers 3-4 linebacker, something no one's ever seen before. How will he be in space? Will he be a non entity in coverage? If you're paying for him solely as a pass rusher, I'd much rather look at Dumervil, who is 26 and thrived in the scheme. -X-
But as i included theyed always give us a pick but yes an average linebacker, a slot receiver a 1st round virtual second rounder , and a possible 5th for Peppers and a 4th or 5th doesnt seem crazy to me. Peppers is elite, imagine him in Rex's system, and the Panthers arent gunna give him up for nothing thats why the first has to be included.
Clowney has never shown he can play the slot. He is only useful on go routes, and apparently not that useful, because he did pretty much nothing this season. ZERO trade value. Thomas is too important to the Jets to trade. He had a great season this year. He didn't turn out to be the pass rusher we were hoping for, but he was dominant against the run and regularly took up 2 blockers at the 2nd level. Peppers would likely get the start, but rotate with Thomas on 1st down. He lost his starting job in 2 games this year based on performance. He had a very pedestrian 2nd half of the season overall. Like Jenkins I believe his lack of effort is directly tied to the fact he wants out of Carolina. You do not trade players and a 1st round pick for that.
I think our 1st rounder alone for Peppers is pushing it, let alone adding a starting OLB, a 5th, and a 3rd WR
By all means id trade something like a 2nd and a player/pick for him but i dont think the Panthers would take that. And giving up thomas is not the worst thing in the world hes AVERAGE at OLB and has a big contract. He stops the run well BUT has no pass coverage skills and cannot pass rush for his life. Also id consider Clowney a 4th WR behind Brad Smith.
Well, I was unaware that Peppers is already 30. My point is, I'd give up Thomas and a 1st for a Pro-Bowl passrusher.... Maybe not Peppers because I agree with your point that he may not have enough left in the tank to justify a 1st.
The Panthers are probably not going to get anything for Peppers and he most likely will be signed to another team in Free Agency.
This would have to be a sign and trade? Right? He was franchised last year so currently does not have a contract. I don't believe you can franchise then trade a player.
Julius pepper is going to cost a lot and I really think he gets a little more acclaim than he deserves at this point in his career. He's a very good player but I'm telling you guys he's more inconsistent than you'd think.
Trust me id definately do this but i think the BRoncos will wrap him up and even if they dont i think teams are willing to offer more for him then we would.
True. He was a major part of the Bronco's early success. The biggest question against him is going to be his health/toughness. He did have a big dropoff after his toe injury.
This is how I feel. Very good player, but I get the feeling that he's going to be one of those guys that goes downhill quick. and as others mentioned, not so confident about the 3-4 transition. Still be a good player, but a superstar paid player?
And is he a one year wonder? He kind of exploded this year. Small quick player for sure, can he do it again?
+1 Committing that much money to an unproven player isnt tha jets ideal situation even though IMO he seems to be a great player.
That's the biggest problem I would have about bringing him in altogether, never mind what it might cost. 30 years old and entering his first season in a 3-4...not my favorite defensive situation. As per the compensation, I think someone is going to overpay and offer a 1st for him. If it is the Jets, that will give the team a 2 year window to win it all while risking the health and depth of the offensive line, the defensive line, or the linebacker corps itself. There is almost no depth at OLB and giving up Thomas for Peppers gives the Jets a (hopefully)better starter at LOLB with the same depth problem behind him. Keeping Thomas and drafting an OLB high would cover the Jets at two levels: the Jets get a depth player and, so long as the CS does not try to overrule the scouts, a potential starter while keeping an experienced veteran who can step in if needed.
Looking through his stats I may have jumped the gun a little with that statement. Sure he had a breakout type year this year with the 17 sacks, that is getting into elite territory, but he did have one other season with 12.5 sacks a few years back. Either way, it was his first year as a 3-4 LB. The jury is still out, but he is alot younger than Peppers.
That is a major question that I failed to consider earlier. This past season was Dumervil's first in a 3-4 defense and he exploded. Right now there are two ways that can go and we have examples of both on either side of our starting OLBs. Thomas had a, sort of, awakening after switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4, then completely fell off again. Pace had been dismal as a 4-3 DE for years until the Cards switched to a 3-4, exploded, got paid, and has continued to be a force on the strong side. Going back to Dumervil's previous seasons, there is really two thing that you can judge him by: his motor. Given his previous production being either stellar(2006: 8.5 sacks;2007: 12.0 sacks) or right on par for his analog this season on the Jets(Thomas 2008: 5.5 on an OK defense;Dumervil 2008: 5 sacks on a dismal defense). These numbers lead me to believe he that he is far from a one year wonder. He may never have a better statistical season than this year, but I highly doubt he completely falls off after getting a new contract.
