true indeed ... i doubt that 12 mill is all base salary, so hes probably due a hefty roster bonus come march 1st there will be a lot of players cut between now and march 1st and, with our number one ranking, we should be on the list of every free agent (waiver wire) defensive player
Apparently his salary number for the year is inflated because he hit escalators. That money goes into salary, not bonus. He's got $8.11 million in salary alone heading his way this season, plus $4 million on a roster bonus. If that roster bonus is due to hit March 1st, it would be very good for other teams hoping to sign him. As someone said before, the Warner retirement announcement can't be helping the Cards in their effort to get him to restructure.
If he gets cut sign him then trade rhodes for anything. If they put him on the block trade rhodes and a conditional 2011 pick for him. Rolle is a baller
That's another great thing about having Rex as a coach. You gotta believe any upper tier defensive, or offensive, player for that matter would love to play for a coach like Rex. I have to believe now that Rex has had a year under his belt to really evaluate this teams strengths and weaknesses that the defense for sure will be better next season. I think we're gonna see how Rex wears the scouts hat and assembles this team into his image on both sides of the ball. Can he find those special players that aren't superstars but play after the whistle type players who Rex can get the most out of on the cheap?
It would be nice if we get rolle, he's a very good player and a rex type of guy. He's explosive with the ball in his hands and makes a ton of tackles he reminds me of a mini ed reed. Not the same caliber but similar style of play.
AZ is NOT going to honor Rolle's contract as is... they would cut him first. So, it's a matter of completely renegotiating his contract, or cutting him. With Warner retiring today, Rolle might be much more inclined to go elsewhere. Given the landscape of the uncapped year, I'm pretty certain Rolle will look to jump ship. The Jets are obviously on the uptick, and from what I've gathered, most NFL players would love to play for Ryan. Is he better than Rhodes? Not if Rhodes fully commits and does what Ryan is asking him to do. If not, Rolle would be a great pickup, especially given the lack of player movement and availabilty this year. Tanny's hands are tied, except for players that get cut, and I think Rolle will force that issue, and get cut. He'd be a very big fish in a very small pond in FA this year.
I'm kind of mad I read this thread because I'm going to be REALLY disappointed if we don't get him now...
As far as I'm concerned, anyone we manage to scoop up in FA this year is a bonus. The system has set my expectations low, although they may jump up when we start seeing salary dumps.
You want a straight trade and have to pay him 12.1 million for this season? If it were contingent on him restructuring, I'd say it was possible. EDIT: Wait, and we get a 5th back? Yeah, that's not happening.
If Rolle gets cut we have to sign him! Like someone said he's a mini-Ed Reed and would be much of an improvement over Rhodes
Yes, the Giants do need improvement at safety. I didn't know they were interested in Rhodes, too, though.
I had horrible expectations too, it's just that Rolle is one of my favourite backs in the league. It's just like how I REALLLLLLY wanted Santana Moss in 2001. I wasn't expecting it to happen, but hey maybe I sure as hell wouldn't mind.
1. Rolle's middle name is Rocelious. 2. At a mere 6'0", how can we expect him to cover the Chargers WRs if we face them in the playoffs again?
I'd be down with acquiring Rolle. It's unlikely we land anybody noteworthy though, as per the FA rules this offseason. Question: If we cut Rhodes does that let us sign someone to the equivalent of his cap hit? How would that work?
No to the question. We only get a UFA if we lose a UFA who was under no obligation to us for 2010. We get nothing for cutting Rhodes. Rolle isn't a UFA, though. We'd likely acquire him after he was waived by Arizona (if that happens). We have zero restrictions on signing players under those circumstances.
This is the kind of name-mining people need to do. Free agents aren't going to be our thing except maybe for a couple small names. I don't have my hopes set low at all. I think in an uncapped year, Tannenbaum will work some magic and go hard after players like Rolle who are released. That said, Rolle isn't a hitter. In fact, I don't even know if he's better than Rhodes.
