Rolle says that he won't take a paycut Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on January 28, 2010 9:06 PM ET Cardinals safety Antrel Rolle made the Pro Bowl as an alternate, but even he must know that's not going to receive the $12.1 million he's scheduled to next season. That huge number (salary plus bonus) was put into Rolle's contract to force a renegotiation. Rolle said recently to the Arizona Repbublic that he won't take a pay cut, but it's unclear if he meant a paycut from $12 million or a pay cut from his 2009 salary. Either way, it will be a tricky deal for the Cardinals to close. They are already paying safety Adrian Wilson a ton of money and Rolle is not the same caliber of player as Wilson. Rolle's career has been up and down, but he'd love to hit the open market this offseason when few young quality players are available. He could drive a hard bargain. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/01/28/rolle-says-that-he-wont-take-a-paycut/ I've been watching Rolle since his college days in the ACC, and to my mind, he fits the mold of this defense pretty well. We haven't got many Miami players on this roster (actually I don't think we have any at the moment), but Rex Ryan had tons of them in Baltimore, so I think it's fair to say he's got an affinity for the sort of athlete the U produces. A trade may be unlikely, since we're short on chips and his contract is apparently pretty hefty, but if he gets cut, I think he's a potential signing even without a Rhodes trade.
It makes sense, as you say, given Rex's history of having U players on his D. However, I haven't seen much of Rolle play since college, and I'm still unclear on some of the FA stuff, so I'm not sure how realistic it would be to acquire him other than by trading for him.
If he gets cut, I think we'd be one of the first places he visits. That would be a great pickup. I'd imagine Rex might like having a converted corner at the position.
So we can sign anyone who gets cut, but no one who is entering FA as an UFA, is that correct? And I agree; with Leonhard's style as one Safety, I bet Rex would really like having a ball-hawking, cover-type as the other. Furthermore, I think Rolle isn't as shy about contact as Rhodes is.
^ Agree. The way Rhodes was playing this season, Rolle would be a definite upgrade, and probably fit the position much better.
I love how we get rid of guys because they cry about their contract, and now we consider bringing guys because they cried about their contract. It's fascinating really.
I like Rolle's versatility (Ig mentioned it earlier).....the guy is a converted CB...and would be able to move around in this secondary if ever called upon. An excellent pickup for the Jets if the situation should arise.
Yes. Essentially, there are three ways of becoming an unrestricted free agent: 1) Scheduled Unrestricted Free Agent. 2) Scheduled Restricted Free Agent; team declines to tender. 3) Waived by team. We are unlimited in our ability to sign the third category. The first two require us to lose a free agent first and then sign the new player to a contract equivalent to or less than the contract signed by our departed player. In other words, we can't sign a UFA (except if he's been cut) until one of our UFAs signs with another team, and even then we're limited by our previous player's new first year salary.
If he's cut, there's no restrictions whatsoever. The whole 'Final Eight' deal only applies to players who's contracts expire on their own, the Jets can acquire as many cut players as they want. That's my understanding, at least. As the article notes, Rolle may realize this, combined with the fact that so many other young players will be RFAs, could make him a much hotter commodity on the open market than he might otherwise be. Throw in the fact that Warner's retiring, and this does seem like a good time to have the leverage to force your way out of town.
I know he might be a good player... but I just hate his guts... don't know why... I just do. But if he is the best thing for this team I'll be happy to have him here... I guess. Problem is any good player that hits FA this year will be over-priced... I can see teams like Dallas or the Giants overpaying big. PS I am a fan of MYRON Rolle though... since we are talking S...
Thanks for clarification, fellas. And... ...have you read any of the posts in the numerous Rhodes threads?
hes not crying about his contract, hes saying that he'll play out the contract that he signed. why should he have to take a paycut? anyway, i havent really watched rolle play since his days as a corner but bringing him in will allow us to move rhodes for a pick. thats fine by me, i want as many picks as possible in this draft
This is true. Although, the Giants have a number of areas to address that overpaying for 1 player may not be the wisest decision, so they may avoid it. However, I agree that a team like Dallas, that is pretty close to a complete team, could overpay for 1 player since the team is only a player-or-two away. I think our D is only a player-or-two away (aside from depth) from being truly elite, one of those players being a DB; maybe Rolle is one of those players.
Well, first off, personally I've never cheered a guy out of town over a contract dispute. I'm all for players getting as much as they can, because they've got anywhere from 5-12 years to make a life's worth of money, and in many cases a life's worth of medical bills to pay as a result of playing the game. I want to see Leon get paid. I don't think Jones should have to give up a dime. More importantly, I think there's a difference between, say, a guy like Boldin, signing a deal and then wanting a better one two years later, and a guy like Rolle saying he's not inclined to alter his contract. Like the original post says, these late year numbers are usually put in there to force a renegotiation, so if Rolle is refusing to renegotiate, it's a pretty good indication that he wants out of Arizona. Boldin opted to do a deal at a time when he had no leverage, so it's not surprising he ended up being unhappy. The only times I ever get frustrated with a player over contract stuff is when an inflated ego leads to demanding more money than the market will bear. If you think you're worth 10 mil a year, but nobody in the league wants to pay you 10 mil a year, guess what, you're not worth 10 mil. I still understand why they would want 10 mil, and I think they deserve that 10 mil that no team will pay them a heck of a lot more than any owner deserves the ridiculous profits they make.
I'm prolly stating the obvious, but the more I think it about it, the more I want us to acquire Rolle. The ideal situation would be to sign him, then trade Rhodes for a 3rd (or a couple of picks) in this deep draft. If that were to happen, we'd have upgraded the S position and picked up bonus picks before even entering the draft. Make it happen, Tanny!
Well, we have to wait until we see what happens to him in Arizona first. They haven't decided to cut him yet, and likely won't until they attempt to address the position through FA.
I'd love to get Antrel, he'd be an absolutely perfect fit for this team, and not just because I was a fan of his back in the day at Miami. He always had good coverage skills, just wasn't quick enough to play at the level his top ten selection would have required at corner. He's been great since he moved over to safety, though having one of the best in the game next to him doesn't hurt. He can tackle (not just hit, tackle) too, something I know won't be lost on Rex if he does hit the market.
