Uhh, we really don't need a vet QB in my opinion. Plenty of other areas for us to be looking for help other than QB. I'd say that area is covered well enough.
Wouldn't most everyone agree that Chad fits well into Rex's "team first" mentality? If he is healthy I would love to see him back, and so would the home crowd.
Marc Bulger: 1) Class act character 2) 2 Pro Bowls 3) Can sling the rock 4) Doesn't want to play for St. Louis and their turnstile OL 5) Can get healthy as a backup 6) Can stay healthy behind our OL
if you think he has it all figured out after one year you are a fool. I never knew that a rookie just "gets it" after 18 starts. That's new to me. I guess we should just have shit backing him up, so if his knee ever hurts him again, the godlike defense will take care of everything... because the Jets are definitely going to face a horrible team with a rookie QB every time Sanchez gets hurt.
He's not coming back as a backup but it has nothing to do with Tanny and/or Favre. It was the smart thing to do for a one year gamble last year, and Pennington would have shown Pennington the door for a healthy Brett Favre. And most Jets fans would have signed up for an AFC Championship run with a healthy Favre last year right up until the final whis-....interception. Chad wants to starts, and another team will sign him because technology and medicine are getting better every day by leaps and bounds. Another operation is like having your third or fourth wisdom tooth removed and career-ending injuries from yesterday are merely season- ending today. And it's not like his throws have ever re-injured any of his old injuries...it's fluke falls and hard tackles...the same 50-50 risk every player in the NFL takes on every single play. But we also don't need a backup who's never been to the conference championship teaching Sanchez anything, at this point. It might have been nice to have a Garcia speaking in Sanchez's ear during the rough patches of this year instead of Clemens but, we got through it and Sanchez heading in the right direction without the player/mentor/salary cap eater being suggested. Ainge/O'Connell/Smith will be fine as the backups, and if Sanchez went down and one of them isn't...THEN we sign a cheap veteran has-been who makes us curl up into balls and cry for the rest of the season. BUT, if doctors tell Chad he has to hang it up or his arm does, he would be a great young QB coach and the perfect mentor for Sanchez, especially with the storms he weathered in NY from fans and media.
Ahh, yes, the '99 season. That is where this knee-jerk thread is originating from. I'm sorry, but I'll stand by the stable of guys we have on the roster at this point. Another preseason down and I don't see why Ainge shouldn't be ready to step up as #2 for us. Plus, I don't see that many guys sitting around looking for a backup job that are really going to "save" us if Sanchez goes down. As much as I love Penny... he should retire at this point.
The stable of guys we have = Clemens, Ainge, O'Connell? After that '99 season I think it is shortsighted to not have a capable (experienced) backup available for the odd ligament/tendon tear.
Marc Bulger would be an excellent addition to this team, either him or Pennington would be fine even though Pennington would be a quarter of the player he once was
If it makes sense for both sides I could see it happening. I think people make too much of the way they cut Chad, it's a business, they all understand that. If he has no better offer and the Jets want him he'd be here. I don't see him as a starter anymore, you just can't rely on him to stay on the field. He'd be the perfect guy to get 2-3 wins if Sanchez got hurt, that's why you get a back-up. The idea of mentoring a young starter is a nice side benefit but overrated, the job is to win a few games if you have to and we all know Chad can do that.
Pennington would make a great teacher for Sanchez. I would be totally behind him coming back, as long as he knows his role, he has always been a team guy.
Personally, I like Pennington but no way they should bring him back. Even with no arm, no way he ever wants to be a backup. He'd come into camp, say all the right things and then think he should start.
No QB in his right mind is coming to the Jets this season thinking he's going to be the starter. That's off the table.
It has been said that Henne's improved play this year was attributed to Pennington's mentorship. With that being said, if Pennington can prove to a team that he is healthy enough to start, he will catch on with another team as a starter...(ie. Bills, Rams..) Who knows, maybe even Cleveland ..
Chad I'd love to see Chad back as a QB coach, but if he's going to play next year I'm sure he'll be looking to start. As for why we should sign a vet backup, there is nobody on the Jets coaching staff or roster that has more starting Experience than Sanchez. It's nice to have someone who's "been there" to mentor a young QB. It's probably less necessary next year than this past year, but it can't hurt. We should get some type of serviceable backup if Ainge isn't up to it. Everyone remembers 1999, but how many times in the 00's did we lose Pennington for the year and watch things go into the shitter? Bulger would be great if he were willing to be a backup. Kitna wouldn't be bad either. Anyone who's played a few seasons and could hold the fort if Mark gets hurt would be a smart addition.
Just like Volcano Nacho's, injuries change a man. He has had a few shoulder injuries now, might not be many takers out there. I still think a 3 year deal somewhere else with the "opportunity" to compete for the starting job is where he ends up.
I'd love to see a lot of guys in here to help mark but the reality of it is we can only sign one unrestricted free agent and I doubt it'll be for a backup QB. Chad is not heading into the coaching world just yet either. We did see him progress in the Playoffs and as long as the Jets as a whole start using Mark more and more he'll be just fine. I think opening day Schotty should surprise the shit out of everyone and just let Mark go crazy and throw for 350 yards. I'd love to see that and our first opponent would not know what hit them.
