Ryan Mathews, probably 1 or 2 more, but we're not going for a first round talent. If we drafted a first round RB, I'd be livid.
I have a question for you guys. If we cut TJ, and TJ is scheduled to make $7mil this year, does that mean we can bring in someone with that much salary from the FA? In other words, if we cut TJ, would that constitute as losing a player in the FA? If so, we absolutely cut TJ and bring in a top dollar CB or someone of a bigger need via FA while drafting a late round RB. Greene and Leon are capable backs. Woodhead can step in if need be and the rookie RB can also help out.
I believe the Jets can sign any amount of cut players they want. they can only sign free agents whose contracts have expired in correlation to the free agents they lose through expiring contracts. a team isn't losing a player they cut, they are giving him up.
^But when a players is cut, he becomes a FA. So whoever we sign, is a FA. If we cut a bunch of players, we wouldn't be allowed to pick up a FA if what you are saying is true. This is a little confusing to me and doesn't make much of sense if true.
^^it is my understanding that there is a distinction between a player that has been cut, and a player whose contract has simply expired. We can sign as much as we want of the former, while we are restricted on the latter.
Toby Gerhart is a Shonn Greene type runner, and he's projected to go as high as late 3 early 4th.....

We can sign any player released from their contract early (cut) or placed on the waiver wire. Aside from that, it sounds like we are restricted to signing a total dollar amount of a true FA's (players whose contract expired) adjusted equivalent to that of the first year salary (plus no more than a 30% increase annually of the first year each year after that.. or some shit) of the true FAs we did not sign to new contracts.
So how does this work in Gholston's case? His 1st year salary wasn't that much, he made it all in bonuses I believe.
Shit, repetative brain fart. Was thinking Ronnie Brown. Was typing R White. Brown is another young RB who has had more than his share of injuries. After he went down, Ricky W took up the slack, and within a month he wore down too. Point is, having 3 solid RB's along with a CoP RB is no longer a luxury, it's a necessity.

Cutting Gholston will not help us get anyone. If makes free agency due to being cut/waived, he is not included under "free agents lost". That rule only applies to players who acquired free agency because of an expiring contract. He wouldn't get us that much even if he was an expiring contract, since he would not got a big money offer from another club, which the rule is based off of.
Ok, so only advantage to cutting him is saving money. (Gholston). We won't be able to trade him, so he would just be cut (we save some backend $$) and he becomes an unrestriced free agent and he could shop himself around?
We're not saving much if we cut him, he's still guaranteed $11million. The only advantage to cutting him is getting him off the roster this season and absorbing the cap hit without penalty should the CBA be reinstated after 2010.
