Mora hints that he wanted Mark Sanchez Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on January 26, 2010 10:59 AM ET Losing his job has not taken Jim Mora off the NFL radar. Since getting replaced by Pete Carroll, the former Seahawks coach has provided fodder for lip readers, and talked up Michael Vick. In a segment on NFL Network Monday, Mora had some interesting comments about Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez and Seattle's decision to pass on him with the fourth pick of the draft last year. "I'll tell you what, we really liked him. I really liked him. The offensive staff really liked him," Mora said when asked about his interest last year. "We had trouble getting a consensus in the room as to whether he'd be the right fit for our organization at that time." Well, if the staff liked him, it's fairly easy to conclude who didn't. The Seahawks stuck with Matt Hasselbeck without picking a quarterback of the future. "So, the Jets jumped up and picked [Sanchez]," Mora continued. "And we drafted Aaron Curry, who we were very happy with, but I'll tell you this. I was a big Mark Sanchez fan then and I'm a bigger one now. I think this guy is going to be a great one in this league." We could be reading too much into things, but Mora gave the clear impression that he wanted Sanchez and perhaps his G.M. at the time, Tim Ruskell, didn't. We're looking forward to finding out what Ruskell texts Mora after this one
Matt Hasselbeck is always going to be a 'could have been' that never was. I've always thought he was an overrated player.
Matt Hasselbeck is a good QB, sorry thanks for playing. He is a top QB in this league when he has a line and someone to throw to. Anyone who thinks otherwise has not seen him much (few people watch the 'hawks anyways) ..
Mora really shouldnt have been fired. Have to give him more than 1 year to rebuild Hasselback has been a solid qb, not great but solid And also he has had no help as of late
Mora it's easy to say that now that what sanchez proved but is it really true????? the guy is looking for a job no shit he is going to say stuff like that!!
I was in Seattle for the draft, at a wedding. With a lot of Seahawks fans when it went down. The consensus was that a) The Seahawks threw a lot of smoke screens to lead on that they were taking Sanchez. b) They played it safe and took Curry. They thought Seattle was going to try to trade the pick by leading on that they would draft Sanchez, but fans felt they never were serious about it. But Mora's comments disprove that theory.
BS. I doubt they were ever seriously considering picking Sanchez. Curry had huge value on draft day, and Hasselbeck still looked to have a few more years before he was ready to hand over the reins. The only real threat was Cleveland picking him, or the Redskins trading up to nab him first. And I have to admit, I was f***kin' surprised to see Dan Snyder get outbid on a potential franchise QB.
Yeah Tanny said it clearly that Rams and Seattle threw a bunch of smoke screens regarding Sanchez and that got him worried. I guess Seattle wasn't throwing smoke screens after all. They just couldn't make up their mind and half the room including Mora wanted Sanchez while the other half wanted Curry. Glad they went with Curry. We needed a QB more than Seattle and Sanchez would have been toasted there anyways.
The thing that made getting Sanchez such a surprise for me was not the trade-up, it was that St Louis and Seattle both passed on him despite having aging and injury prone QB's who were clearly on the backside of their career and really had never been that great to start with. I went into the draft figuring that Sanchez goes on 2 or 4 at the latest and we wind up squinting at Campbell on the 17 and trying to figure out if he's worth the high fail potential or not.
Well thing with Sanchez was, if he didn't get picked by the 5th, he very well could have landed in Redskins lap. Bengals didn't need a QB, Raiders drafted JeMarcus, Jags n Packers had their QBs. 49ers, Bills and Broncos were the only concern so they decided to wait it out until at least the Packers pick to trade up IMO.
