Hate to say it (and, no, i am not a darksider), but Revis was SO good this year that we just might get exploited next year early and often by teams that will simply throw to their #2 and #3 receiving options all game long. This is a copy-cat league and Manning provided the blueprint for all our foes to use next year - stay away from Revis and pick the rest of the secondary apart. Lito is likely gone and Strickland is injury prone. Coleman? No comment. If we do not upgrade our #2 CB position, our number one rated pass defense will be lucky to finish in the top 10 next year. Revis lead the NFL in Passes Defensed this year by a WIDE margin. The main reason for this was because teams (especially in the first half of the season) weren't "sold" on his lockdown status. They are now and the other side of the filed will suffer the consequences (just use yesterday's game as "Exhibit A").
The problem is, every team doesn't have Peyton Manning....if it was that simple we would not have the #1 Pass D, by a lot.
Do you honestly think the idea of throwing away from Revis was a new idea on Sunday? Our secondary was pretty good this season, but we ran into some injury issues and Manning is a robot. Lowery isn't a #2 and Coleman should never see that much time. stop panicking. http://espn.go.com/blog/afceast/post/_/id/8882/jets-cbs-dont-feel-the-burn
I never thought of it like that. Looks like we'll have to clone Revis. Seriously though, it is a good point that you brought up. We have depth for the secondary, but need set starters who can defend at a high level. Granted, we had injuries this season in the secondary, so I wouldn't worry too much.
Peyton Manning is one of the best QB's of all time and your frightened that he picked our secondary apart. When he had time to throw he was making perfect throws. 80% of other qb's dont hit those passes and no one makes them as consistantly and Manning can.
I think that will be addressed in the off season by improving the rush from the front 3 and using linebackers pretty much 80% of the time. Rexs defense says it must get to the qb to succeed. They tried it with the front 3 and linebacker help and then had to send the kitchen sink to get it done. Heres where you totally correct...it left you Revis and another cb and usually one safety with the other blitzing. Revis did his thing but most cb's, while I agree lacking in the talent department, were left high and dry. That eventually gets exposed and I pretty much guarantee that will not be the case next year. It was the case this year because that is what finally worked..and when it didnt, like Sunday, its game set match. This isnt the perfect gameplan Rex has in mind..and that will be fixed this off season. EDIT: One other thing I just thought of..its probably while we struggled so badly in the last 2 minutes of games. You have to be bit more conservative and that usually means not sending cb's. Some were saying it looked like a prevent defense but all we were doing was sending linebackers..and that never seemed to be good enough to put pressure on other teams. A real weakness in the front 3 too.
Also not many teams have as many weapons as manning. Revis covers the number 1 target that QB's like to throw at which is why they sometimes force it to him.
Yeah, but if 40% less passes go Revis' way next year, guess where they are headed? That's right, to CBs on the other side of the field that could quite possibly be below average. Remember, a chain is as strong as its weakest link and that is especially true on defense. Less passes towards Revis IS a problem, period.
Trust me we will address the CB and Safety Dept this off season because its a must and alot of those guys wont be around
Did you read anything I posted? Do you really think Manning and the Colts were the first team to think of the idea that they should throw away from Revis? wtf, man.
Peyton Manning is about 1 of 3-4 QB's in this league that can almost totally ignore their #1 Wr and continually roast the secondary. Most QB's go to ole reliable when in doubt. So really it is no big deal. It might be a copy cat league but you can not stick Jake Delhomme back there and say be Peyton Manning don't throw to Steve Smith and roast the Jets regardless. The vast majority of QB's look to their #1 religiously when pressured.
a bunch of times this year we let revis play man up with everyone else in a zone on the rest of the receivers (te's, wr's, and rb's as a group), and it worked quite a bit. i agree that we need a major upgrade at our #2, and possibly #3 corner positions, we also need better play from our linebackers in pass coverage, or and upgrade or two in the lb department. rhodes has got to be upgraded, whether it be more dedication and effort or a potential change, our free safety needs lots of work in the ballhawking area.
Here's the way I see it: 1) Revis is Revis 2) Lito is gone 3) Lowery is young (and will only get better) 4) Strickland is solid 5) Coleman is Coleman This CBA thing is a big deal to us so it's worth watching. If that isn't worked out then we probably won't be able to "replace" Lito in free agency. Thus, we can expect a long year if we decide to put a rookie opposite Revis. Then again, with Revis' knowledge and work ethic a rookie could develop quickly with him as his tutor.
Excellent point. I mean...can you imagine any other team, with two 100 reception receivers, going to his 3rd and 4th receivers and having success? Unheard of.
let's go after Nnamdi and we are all good!!!! We will probably draft a CB, I could see the arrival of Fabian Washington also!!
It's a lot more complicated than you think. You are assuming that: 1. QBs will have a stable pocket 2. That said QB will have ample time behind there 3. Then, after that, you are assuming that the coverage will blow up somewhere 4. And the QB can exploit the weakness. You are making 4 hidden assumptions that are neither sound nor reasonable. Ok. Peyton had his stable pocket, but do you care to guess how many QBs in the league get that luxury? You wouldn't believe how scarce that stable pocket is. On top of that, do you honestly think the QBs will have ample time in the pocket? Against Rex defense? Just what the hell have you been watching all season? They do not allow all that much time against most of the QBs. Peyton Manning is an exception, not the rule. Hence, due to the lack of time, the blown coverage does not occur -not as much. Again, it's Peyton Manning making things happen, not the other way around. If you don't believe what I say, why don't you measure the time Peyton gets behind the line yourself? He didn't get much in the first half (by my count) but he got a LOT, and the score shows. By average, if any QB gets a full 3 seconds behind the pocket, he's getting a good protection. I think Rex allows around 1 to 1.5 secs, which is usually why QBs are rattled against his defense. Today's undoing was simply that - Peyton had too much time on his hand, and we couldn't limit that. Now, onto the 4th - I don't think I need to beat this down on your head. If the QB doesn't have enough time, that also means the play cannot be properly developed, much less a threat can be there for the QB.
It really is unheard of. Maybe Brees can do it, Rivers couldn't last week. I do not think Favre could do it on this defense. Brady could with Welker, without him nfw...... That is about it. Peyton Manning is that once in a lifetime QB that if your team does not have a straight up pass rush, he will eventually figure your scheme out and torch your defense. Well at least this year with out Harrison and more weapons at his disposal, he just might be an unstoppable force. As much as I want the Saints to win, I do not think they have a snowballs chance in hell. If Favre got 500 on them, Manning will have the same without the mistakes..............
