See, I would like to see Cotch in the slot and add another Burner type. I don't think Clowney will be that man, which is a shame.

I don't see a ceiling on how good he can be. He has outstanding footwork, huge hands, a very quick release, can make all the throws and he seems to work as hard as anyone. The key thing is having the right system for him to develop in and putting the right players around him.

Amazingly as a rookie he didn't have a running back that was an option out of the backfield once Leon got hurt.

Quick -- when was the last time you can visualize Sanchez throwing a screen pass to a RB ?

    We missed LW incredibly.

It's been said in a lot of other Sanchez threads - his progression went a bit in reverse for most rookies. He started really hot, then slumped a little bit. Ryan's decision to intervene and take a greater role in offensive planning really, really paid dividends in terms of Sanchez's progression through the last half of the season. Finding Greene and returning to "ground and pound" really increased his pocket presence and that stuck even though Shonn went down.

I really hope that sticks with Sanchez and that next season, Schott finally takes off the training wheels and lets him throw deep. He's going to be a good one :)

i think what we seen in the play-offs is what we are gonna see next year.it seemed like something really clicked in the 2nd cinci game.with the 3 extra games he played it'll be like week 1 will be week 4 in terms of experience.i think he can be a 20td-10int qb next year.if that happens we're probably a 11-12 win team.imho

I'll give Sanchez a C- for his rookie season, he showed glimpses of greatness, but for the most part, sucked. His rookie playoff appreance I give a B+, he was solid, tough and made good decisions, but his gaze is still in need of improvement, to many guys sitting open on the field while he eyes down his primary reciever. Hopefully that changes, I am very happy with him besides that.

Agree 100%. People were screaming for Sanchez to check down but who is he supposed to check down to? Tony Richardson?? Aside from Leon, our RB's are horrible pass-catchers. I would love to see us pick up a Richie Anderson type FB in the off-season.

i think sanchez' rookie year was about as successful as it could have been without the superbowl victory. the early success was great and i think it got everyone's expectations up a lot higher than they should have been. after 3 weeks we had many people on this site thinking that 13-3 was a lock for this team. i personally saw the potential for this team to win that many games, but damn is that hard to expect from a rookie head coach and qb.

after the first 3 weeks we saw a troubling change in sanchez and the entire offensive philosophy for awhile. schotty started calling plays that demanded more out of sanchez than the rookie was ready for and we saw some great struggles in the dark ages of the season. we went from 3-0 to 4-6 based mostly on the fact that we could not score and sanchez was turning the ball over at quite an alarming rate. the one thing that kept my confidence in him high was seeing the one or two great passes he would make even on his worst days. i saw that he had the ability to make the types of throws that great qbs make. i was very confident that if sanchez could get through this season without any lasting mental scars that he would be able to develop into a good if not great qb.

the turning point really seemed to be when rex made the decision to involve himself in the offense, and more specifically sanchez' development. what rex did was somehow get through to mark that this wasn't like college. in the pro's you need to be patient and wait for your opportunity and when that rare opportunity does present itself it needs to be taken advantage of. for much of the season sanchez showed that he was impatient and would try to force plays even if they weren't there. a great example of his improvement in this area is this last game against the colts. i don't remember exactly when the play occurred but the goal was to hit a deep pass to clowney. earlier in the year mark would have let that pass fly even with the double coverage, in the afc championship game he pulled it down checked down and lived to fight another down. we all know he can make the big pass when he has the opportunity, but to me it is the throws he does not make that have shown how much he has grown up in the latter part of the season.

overall i give sanchez' rookie year an A not for the body of work but for how he has grown from looking like a lost kid during the buffalo fiasco to a calm and cool leader throwing 80 yard td strikes and hanging in the pocket until the very last second to hit keller for another td in the afc championship game. for the first time in what seems like forever we have no question mark at the qb position going into next year and we all know that the nfl has turned into a qb driven league.

He had a rough regular season and really was a weakness for us. We made play-offs in spite of him, not because of him. He was one of the 3 worst rated QB starters in NFL (which is understandable with him being a rook, but still a fact). In play-offs though the guy was terrific. 93 rating, more than most play-off QBs, and looks like he really matured. I am being cautiously optimistic he will have a very good year next year.

by any standard this guy should be getting an A. he was much better than most rookie QB's and really, that's what you have to judge him against. it's unfortunate that he came the year after two QB's that scored A+'s, but i honestly think he's better than both of them. he's tough, he's got great pocket awareness, he's very accurate and most of all, he's a big student of the game. he had to learn how to be a qb in cold weather this year and it showed. his worst games came when it was windy and that's something that comes with experience. you just can't make certain throws when there's a lot of wind.

he's going to get a lot better. the next 3 years should be an upward path for him. he's going to learn to dump off just a split second faster, keep his peripheral vision open for the guy that's open breaking off a route, learn to use audibles better, all things that should make this offense substantially better.

he and the jets have a bright future

I actually think that Cotch would be even more deadly in the slot. I'm certainly not saying he isn't a good #1, or even #2 WR.

His first few games were unbelievable. Then teams started to figure him out. As the season progressed, Sanchez developed and developed sharply IMO going into the playoffs and through out. He played his best game of the season in the AFCCG and made the entire off season look bright....the future is bright.

    Regular Season: C
    Post season: A+
    Final Grade: A

Post season has gotta count for more. If we had not got lucky and made the post season, we'd be having threads talking about which QB to draft, lets be honest.

Sanchez was underwhelming in many games during the regular season, but he took his bumps and bruises and truly learned what it means to be an NFL QB. Not sure he really put everything together until the last few weeks of the season, but the kid was phenomenal in the post season when it really counted.

Final verdict: I think we have a winner boys.

The way he played yesterday was amazing. Not that his numbers were amazing but...this kid was a 23 year old rookie playing in the fucking AFC CHAMPIONSHIP on the road!!!! The moment was not too big for him. Actually i think the only reason we didnt get totally smoked is because he made plays. Our running game was shit and when Greene left it died.

Overall for the season I give him a B. Only because of that horrible mid season slump but the kid showed resolve. Going forward...

Sanchez...Greene...Washington...Edwards...Keller...Mangold...Ferg...Cotch...all in their 20's!!! I'll take it. Next year...with our running game and Sanchez's improvment the sky is the limit. Shit if we can get this offense averaging around 21 points or so a game with our D..who the fuck is gonna stop us!?!?

If you thought Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan ruined the curve for Mark Sanchez and Matt Stafford at the beginning of this season, I feel horrible for the next QB class coming in April.

Sanchez started and finished strong. He started out with high percentage throws, checking down, and making plays with his feet when needed. He won his 1st three games, something that's never been done in the SB era.

Then came the Saints game, and the decline in Sanchez's play. The Jets decided that Braylon Edwards would be a good idea, with Sanchez forcing balls to a man who can't catch consistently. It was also a good idea to stop running high percentage plays, and focus on tough seam routes that most rookies can't complete in the NFL.

Once Rex Ryan began to sit in on offensive meetings, things got better. A commitment to the running game was finally installed, and Sanchez became a game manager, helping to regain his confidence.

Then the light went on. He said it, Schotty said it, so did Rex. In December the game started to slow down, and his progression hit the next step. He saved his best for last, and did all he could to take the Jets to the SB. But no rookie QB has ever lead their team to the SB, a daunting task which has never been completed by anyone. He played very well despite going up against the greatest QB of all time.

What people continually fail to understand is that he's a damn rookie. They aren't supposed to come into the league and light it up. They are supposed to struggle, make mistakes, lose games, grow, learn and get better.

Sanchez had a typical rookie season, but finished it with a better than expected ending. He shows up in big games. Good, because there are plenty more ahead of him.
