It wasn't unfamiliar for Manning, but you have to wonder: if we punt it and pin them somewhere between the 20 and 5 yard line, maybe - just maybe - Manning doesn't march down the field in 1 minute before the Half. Or - and this is what I'm asking - does he? No matter what transpired, does Manning win this game for the Colts?
first of all, our playcalling was too predictable when we recovered the fumble and kicked that FG. Had we picked up a couple of first downs and didn't leave Manning any time in the first half to come back with that TD, who knows...
We needed to go up 21-6. But it didn't happen. Even then, I am not sure it would have been sufficient. That is how well Peyton played today. Hats off to him and his team.
I'm leaning towards this. I almost feel that even 21-6 lead doesn't stop Manning today. Which then begs the question: does the #1 Defense need improvement? Or is Manning just THAT good?
I was saying the same thing......aren't there SAFE passes in our playbook ? What's wrong with short 6-8 yard passes on slant-outs and passes down the sideline ?
I think Manning is just that good. He shifted line protections all day and knew exactly where the blitz was coming from all game after a rough couple drives to start
21-6 would have been huge. The lack of pass rush from the line is atrrocious. How many sacks did our line get this year ? I'm more upset with Rex today not getting it done with the "D" than I was with Parcells/Belichick in '99.
THIS...and they should been more agressive when they recovered that fumble but hey who knows 21-6 at half might not have even been enough...Manning was just that good today
Really? Our 2008 D had lots of sacks, they were leading the league midseason. But they weren't good at consistently pressuring the QB, and this D was much better at that. Sacks are a misleading stat.
I guess it can. But I want to think that one or the other has to give. I want to think that, despite how great Manning was this year - and I mean 'great' in every sense of the word - that there's a D that can stop him. I'm doubting that that would've happened today, even if no one had gotten injured.
If we had Jenkins and Strickland playing of course we would have had a better shot at beating the Colts, but it's not just the defense. The offense's inability to stay on the field after losing Greene made the D's job a lot harder.
My buddy and I argued about that decision the rest of the day. I thought it was the right move. He had the distance, he should have made it. We were not winning the game with 17 points so we needed to try for three more there. Short field? Does that matter against Manning?
I think Woody had a procedure call in there that really stalled the Jets on that drive with 3 minutes left in the 1st half. Instead of a 3rd and 3 that made it 2nd and 12, and they ended up having to kick the FG. If they had gotten that 1st down, not only was there a chance for 4 more points, but also Indy wouldn't have had time to score. It would have either 17-6 or 21-6. Woody's penalty was huge. They never did show a replay of that. He was acting like the call was bs.
When we were up 17-6 I was starting to feel it too but when Manning made that 2 minute TD drive I knew we were in trouble. One game that came to my mind was the 2006 AFC Championship game where the Pats were up big in the first half but Manning... like he did today picked the defense apart in the 2nd.
Unfortunately, it definitely was a false start on Woody. For some reason he was playing where a left strongside TE would play outside of Ferguson. Also Hartsock was lining up where Woody normally would at the RT spot. Agreed that was a key penalty right there.
