It's largely understood that the Secondary thrives on the Front 7/pass-rush. But after watching Drew Coleman for the past several years, he just doesn't have it. He's another Derrick Strait. EVERY time he comes into the game, he gets picked on; that's not coincidental, rather, the WRs he covers get open. It's time to upgrade the Secondary; it's not - nor should it be - expected that this Pass D needs to be upgraded, but if we're gonna take the next step, we need better DBs than guys like Drew Coleman.
Outside of the offensive line no other group played as well as he secondary IMO. I don't ever oppose to upgrades at any positions but I think if we can get some pass rushers, the current group would look a lot better.
Look, the Secondary was the best in the league this year. But, eventually, you'll meet the best QB/Offense that will pick apart the weaknesses in the D; Coleman is one of those weaknesses and he has been for 2-3 years now.
Harping on Coleman I think is a bit silly IMO as he is our 5th string CB. For a 5th string CB I think he is pretty good acutally. Had Sheppard not ben hot trash (like he usually is) and Strickland gotten hurt (like he usually is), Coleman probably would not have played at all today. At least there to make a play on the ball. He mistimed his jump and Manning made a great throw. Lowery and Coleman are easy targets since they were the ones getting torched all day by Manning's perfect throws but if I had to pick on some players in the secondary to complain about, it would be Rhodes and E. Smith. Besides the fact he's been avoiding contact all year, I have big problem with him letting Addia get to the outside on that 4th quarter running play. My issue with E. Smith is that he is simply not gifted enough physically to play safety in NFL. We get away with playing him against inferior QBs but against guys like Manning he is walking mismatch.
Somebody other than Revis needed to make a big play or stop. I don't expect them to shut down Manning, but at the end of the 1st half, when YOU KNOW Manning is going deep, you can't get burned for a 46yd pass. The secondary played attrocious today. Yes Manning made plays....but when 1 WR is totally out of the game (thanks to Revis), the safeties need to do something on the other WR's or TE's. They didn't make a key play all game. Horrible.
That play was a play where either the guy made a great catch or the ball gets intercepted or batted down.... the guy who was trailing both of them was the over the top help and should of stuck his hand in there as well
Outside of Revis, out secondary is THE WORST at doing those things...how many balls have just slipped past guys who jumped/didn't jump/mistimed their leaps ?
we used to think rhodes was a ballhawk, but we were obviously wrong. a safety in the draft would be a good choice imo
Too lazy and drunk to research the stats right now: What are the INT totals of the DBs - other than Revis - on the year and in the Playoffs?
I jus saw the play and actually giggle on what coleman did, he jumped like 5 seconds early. This guy is no good.
Yup....it was a great throw but we had the coverage right and had 2 guys right in the area. We should have had that play. Rex said there was 'communication issues' in the 1st half. I think there are going to be guys losing their jobs in the next few weeks.
You ALWAYS want to jump LATER on thrown balls because 90% of the time the ball is going to get there LATER and you can JUMP faster than the ball can CLOSE. These guys are supposed to work on this in practice like WR's work on getting their feet down. Our guys in the 2ndary were not so much beaten so much as failed to make plays when they were in position to make them. HUGE difference. And that's why we lost.
Coleman should've just knocked it away instead of going for the pick. Knock down requires only one hand, he could have done that.
