Shotty has already given the green light to pass in that formation - Smith just chose the smarter play of taking it himself when he saw holes to run through. He's not stupid, he won't throw it unless somebody is wide open or it's a sure thing. Rex has admitted these plays exist, and depending on the circumstances, he will throw a pass. For the record, the Jets call the play the "Mizzou" when Smith is under center. Tell me that isn't an indication they trust his ability to throw
Checkmate! You're absolutely right, I retract that statement. I know they have faith in his throwing abilities though, Rex has said it several times.
Now we are thinking! That can add a dimension to the fire drill if it ever happens. The ability to run to get a 1st down if its a 4th and 1-3 or even hit someone going downfield.
I'm all for this play if the timing is right, i.e.: not during an early drive when we're trying to establish our running game. Ditto for the shotgun-I-formation option pitch.(7 hours, 43 minutes)
........why why why why did we not do another play out of the Cat all day? Our running game took a big blow with Greene out, and Smith already proved he could throw it out of the back field. I know Sanchez played a whale of a game, but putting Smith in their to run for a few plays could have helped TJ and sparked our running game in the 2nd half.... I hated seeing us abandon the running game.
Probably because it was Greene and Smith running the option together, and Jones probably either wasn't familiar with the package or they weren't confident in his ability with it.
Meh, I don't think so. The point of our running game wearing them down was having Greene to do that with. Sanchez was playing great, I wanted him under center. Having Smith back there eliminates the passing threat, even if it did work once.
Yea, but once Greene went down, you would think that the Jets would make some adjustment to balance that out. Running a few more plays with the ball in Smith's hands would have given Jones more time to rest on the sideline instead of having the Jets lean on the 31 year old RB with the knee injury. I think the Jets should have gone to Smith a little more once they decided that Greene was out for the rest of the game, if not at least when there were questions about Greene's return.
