I am actually very happy that Romeus stayed in school for his senior year. I get to watch him help Pitt take the Big East title next season. Plus, if the Jets manage to pick him up, he'll be playing behind an improved DL with another year of experience and a greater chance to make an impact in his rookie season.
I'm proud that there's still athletes who care about edgumacation, but we're either going to have to suck or trade up to get him next year. He's a top 15 pick imo...
Why take a NT in this draft? Jenkins will be back, Pouha is solid and Green is a good 3rd string NT. 3-4DE is much more of a priority!
Not if you consider Pouha's future to be a DE. With Ellis, Douglas, Pouha, and DeVito, we have enough for next year, at least. And the upper-level talent at NT is better in this class than we've seen in years.
Pouha is like 33 years old and he weighs 330. He can probably play DE (probably has) because Rex simply loads 3 big bodies on the DL sometimes. That said, we need a starting DE type talent. I'm a huge fan of DeVito though...I think/hope (mostly hope) that he can pull a Kelly Gregg and be an UDFA who starts on a high level D. The talent at 3-4 DE in this class is quite large too... I'll take whatever we can get...but I'm really rooting for Oghobaase/Jones.
Damn, that's a 50/50 decision. Gronkowski is a heck of tight end, but didn't play in 2009. I guess the advisory board gave him a nice review. His only competition will be from Hernandez. Gronkowski is probably the most complete tight end, but the league values receivers much more, so Hernandez could have the upper hand here. I really like Easy Ed Dickson from Oregon - I think after workouts, he'll move up boards. Jermaine Gresham is by far the best tight end in this draft class, so it'll be interesting to see which guy takes over the second spot.
Pouha's 30, and I never realized he was so big. I always thought he was around 310, 315. Still, he's not nearly the disrupting force Jenkins is, and I think we should start planning for the post-Jenkins era. 34DE are fairly easy to find--there are plenty of 43DE and 34DT who can translate to that position. This year, you could find a good one in the 3rd round. A real good disruptive Jenkinsesque NT? Those are usually few and far between. Any chance to grab one, you've got to take.
There's only Cody, and he's got to get coached up and go through NFL training for at least a year or two. Boo Robinson is a nice player and there's a couple of other guys, but those guys don't have All World Jenkins-esque talent. I think our NT situation is set next year with Jenkins/Pouha/DeVito...what we need is to get someone bigger than Douglas next to them...Ellis can remain the best pass rusher on our 3-4 DL. Next year the NT class offers us Taylor, Powe...Austin...Whitlock from TT (Love this guy, undersized NT)...Jenkins...Kendrick Ellis... Then again...next years draft also offers 3 awesome 3-4 DE prospects in Heyward, Ballard (Iowa), and Bailey (U).
No, it's not JUST Mount Cody. Tennessee's Dan Williams could arguably be the best NT prospect in this draft when the draft comes around. 2010 also has a lot of guys that could be valuable rotational NTs like Boo Robinson, Kade Weston, Torrell Troup, and Travis Ivey. Remember, Jenkins was a third round pick, which tells us there could be value in the later rounds at NT.
Well, Jenkins wasn't even drafted as a 34NT. Now, I understand that he was still an NT in the 43 scheme, but I understand that has different responsibilities than the 34NT, correct?
I agree... with the exception of DeVito being a DE and not a NT. If next year we have Ellis,Douglas,DeVito, a rookie and Pitoitua (kid is huge!) I'll be happy at DE I'm cool with having Jenkins/Pouha/Green at NT for next year...
Jenkins was a 2nd round pick. And as far as high end NT prospects go, it's basically Cody. He's the one with dominant upside. Williams has become remarkably overrated this season, and I liked him a whole lot better when he was a 3rd-4th rounder. The Ngata comparisons he's getting are ridiculous. I'd love Robinson on this team to be coached up by Jenkins and Ryan and gang. I think he has some Jason Ferguson in him, but the last guy I said that about (Williams) jumped all the way into 1st round talk. Troup has a chance to be a good player. Weston is meh, no clue who Ivey is. I prefer getting our NT later. That said, I think Powe, Taylor, and Whitlock are my 3 favorite college NTs and none of them are in this draft.
My mistake on Jenkins...I was in a hurry. Why do you think Dan Williams is overrated? The Ngata comparisons are stupid, but Williams deserves to be ranked towards the top - he was one of the best defensive tackles in college football. If you're going to make claims that very good players like Carlos Dunlap and Dan Williams are overrated, then back it up - tell us why you think that player is overrated.
Dunlap I've already spoken on at length. Even if I thought he played hard enough or was a high character guy...He'd take at least two years (probably 3) if you wanted to make him a 3-4 DE, and considering how Gholston gets treated I'm not sure we're ready for that again. I highly doubt he's his listed 290. Williams I'm fine with as a player. I just really wish he hadn't jumped to first round status, because he's someone I tabbed last year as an excellent Day 2 pick. He was always around the ball even last year. I'm not 100% sure he should be a first rounder, but that should be expected considering it's January.
