This isn't the right time in Sanchez' career for Martz. Sanchez needs to get his feet firmly on the ground with NFL Qb 201 as he's graduated from QB 101 under Schotty and Rex. Perhaps 2-3 years down the road, Sanchez will be ready for a Martz style offense.

So what would be wrong with letting Callahan put together a real WCO with a bunch of ground-pounding built in? He was very successful as the OC in adapting the WCO at the Raiders from 1998 to 2001. He took a balanced WCO and turned it into a high-flying affair when he found the right QB to run it in Rich Gannon. I think he'd be the kind of guy who was patient with Sanchez early in the career and then able to fully turn him loose when he got his feet down solidly.
+1. Just look at the Raider offenses in the early 00's that Callahan coordinated. Look at how well he's coached our OL since he's been here. I think he'd be a great OC for us and would provide continuity within the system. Martz makes QB's look good but abandons the run game, is inconsistent and is a fuckin jackass. This team is a run first offense so I'd pass on Martz.
Unless Martz is going to accept that running the football needs to happen 68% of the time then he can be the OC.
This is a guy I wouldn't mind a look at for OC. There is still talk Fox could be going somewhere else which means the asst coachs might too and the Jets have Job security on their side. Panthers have ranking 3rd in rushing offense the last two seasons. I would rather take a chance on a younger (42) guy like this than a re-recycles ex broken down coach who hasn't done anything lately. Also, whether you like some of them or not he has worked for a couple good head coaches throughout his playing and coaching years.
Unless Edwards used stickum on his hands and we draft a WR in the 1st round, we are not made for the high flying offense. He coaches the style the Chargers are using and we aren't built that way.

OK, I might take a lot of shit for this, but let me just express my opinion. I don't think we drafted a $50 million quarter back 5th overall just to see us run the ball 68% of the times and have Sanchez as a 'game manager'. He is a rookie this yr so it makes sense to let him try to manage the games this season. He should hopefully get better next yr and play with a little more consistency. Year 3 is when he should really take it to the Ds. That is when you let him lose (assuming he progresses pretty good). I doubt if we remain a run heavy offense once Sanchez develops into what we hope. Obviously, Rex likes the ground and pound offense so we won't become pass heavy. I just don't see us being a 2:1 run team couple years from now. Next year, we would probably start pass a little bit more depending on the matchups but hopefully we'd still run aroun 60% of the time. My $0.02.
Bringing in Martz right now may very well ruin Sanchez and will definitely neutralize our running game. We don't need anyone encouraging Sanchez to just chuck the ball down the sidelines every play, it flies completely against against the wind with what Rex is trying to produce here. If anyone gets the job it should be Cavanaugh or Callahan. Keep it in house and use the same verbage as we have been, that way Sanchez's learning curve stays the same. Anyway, isn't Callahan's contract up at the end of the season? Hopefully there is no interest in him after this season for an OC, otherwise there is no chance of us keeping him as purely an OLine coach. I would hate to lose him now as we are about to enter a transitional period with our OLine. Faneca and Woody have been playing well but the team needs to start looking for their replacements to be ready in the next couple of years. That's still about 30% more than Martz would want to run it. San Diego delenda est.
^True, but Im not endorsing Martz anyways. I would like Callahan as our OC if Schotty leaves. I just hope Schotty stays. He is a decent OC and is developing every game. Most of us hate him here though but I still think he will become a really good OC with a QB who is not a rookie or who is not on crutches.
Mike Martz is everything I don't like about Brian Schottenheimer. If you're even remotely frustrated by "cute-sy" plays, Martz is not the guy for you. When he coached the Rams, my friends and I used to rip on him relentlessly. We turned "to Martz" into a verb, meaning to call an unnecessarily complex trick play at an inappropriate time to no avail. Martz: "I know they're probably expecting me to kick the field goal here, but ya know what? I'm gonna Martz 'em!"
It also might be important to note that in 2004, with Steven Jackson and Marshall Faulk on the team, St. Louis was ranked 25th in rushing.
Don't forget sending Michael Robinson in on a dive play for the win at the closing seconds of a Monday night game against the Cardinals instead of putting Frank Gore in there. San Diego delenda est.
+1 The issue with Martz isn't that he'd force us to pass...we got Sanchez so we could pass. The issue is that Martz is a douchey control freak who'd probably piss someone off fairly quickly.
