In his fourth season as the gm of this team Tannenbaum has proven to be a very good gm. I won't waste any time discussing the Gholston pick. When Tannenbaum took over we had very few good players. The Edwards/Bradway regime had done a very poor job drafting and developing players. The only players that are still a part of the team that were here prior to Tannenbaum taking control are Cotchery, Brandon Moore, Ellis, Pouha, Bryan Thomas, Dearth and Rhodes. That's only seven players that were here 5 years ago. That basically means that our front office made a series of horrible decisions (Doug Jolley anyone?). Bradway is an excellent scout, but he was a terrible GM. The four drafts (The proven players, every team misses on draft picks) 1) Ferguson- elite left tackle 2) Mangold- elite center 3) Eric Smith- excellent role player, good on man coverage against tight ends (expect to see him on Gates this week at times), very good special teams player. 4) Brad Smith- excellent role player, elite special teams player. 5) Leon Washington- elite special teams/kick returners. Great 3rd down change of pace back. 6) Revis- nothing to add 7) Harris- He will take over for Ray Lewis in the pro bowl shortly. 8) Stuckey- Decent depth wr, was useful in the trade for Braylon. 9) Keller- improved blocking and next year will become an elite tight end with a more experienced Sanchez 10) Lowery- Solid cb depth who may be better off at free safety. I'm confident Rex will find a good role for him. 11) Mark Sanchez- We've seen the good and bad. He's mobile, he's accurate, he's constantly trying to improve. He can make every throw. I don't really know what his ceiling is. 12) Green- Nasty running back, low center of gravity. Great burst to the initial hole. Finishes his runs. Free Agency 1) Alan Faneca 2) Calvin Pace 3) Bart Scott 4) Damien Woody 5) Jim Leonhard 6) Tony Richardson 7) Douglas 8) Howard Green 9) Strickland Trades 1) Thomas Jones 2) Kris Jenkins 3) Braylon Edwards 4) Lito Sheppard Undrafted Free agents 1) Mike Devito 2) Jamal Westerman 3) Danny Woodhead 4) Wallace Wright Four years later the Jets have the talent to compete with any team in the league. They have a potential elite qb. They should be able to compete for the next four or five seasons with the current talent on this team. Tannenbaum has made plenty of mistakes. Kevin Barlow, Kellen Clemens just to name a few, but his overall record has been excellent.
has done a great job so far , we need to realise how important a good GM is . See the mets for perfect example of opposite!!
you factor all that you mentioned in with his "superb cap mgmt skills"....and he's been pretty good for this franchise.
With Rex Ryans ability to get the most out of these depth players that no one thought had any value at all before I think this could be a match made in heaven.
Tanny has done a GREAT job, and I have been one of his biggest fans! With that said, its funny how everyone is now giving Tanny props. More than half of this site was ripping him to peices during the season. I spent hours defending Tanny on this site, some people were even telling me Mangini was the one responsible for most of our guys during Tanny's time. Some of you guys are jokes. Not even three months ago this site was 75% anti-Tannenbaum.
They should be able to pick up an undrafted free agent every year or so for the defense that Rex can turn into a player.
I still fear that means going for the HR every april in the draft. Another 10 pick draft could do wonders with how accurate the FO has been. Another draft as good as 06 would put this team over the top.
My only criticism of Tanny has been his lack of drafting depth, but with the way Rex is getting so much out of these guys I wonder how important that is? Can we continue to survive with a minimal amount of draft picks, and picking up FA's and UDFA's to fill holes? I guess a lot of that will depend on the CBA.
I think Joey Clinkscales makes Tannenbaum look smart. Parcells considered him for the GM position in Miami that ultimately went to Jeff Ireland. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3174839&wwparam=1263306156 And I think Bradway (as a scout, only) does a pretty good job making Tannenbaum look smart. All of that said, the team is on an upward trajectory under Tannenbaum even if it's about .500 since the beginning of 2006.
now that we've spent the last few drafts selling out for quality over quantity, look for tanny to trade a few jet players for draft pics and stockpile offensive/defensive lineman and others. that is, of course, if there's not the next larry fitgerald or bruce smith on the board.
I think it's going to be very difficult to keep all of the players they drafted for a 2nd contract. Especially Revis, Mangold, Harris and Brick. I usually prefer more draft picks then trading up for high picks. The year they traded up for Revis and Harris did not have a lot of good players drafted after Harris. I thought this year that Tannenbaum would hold onto the picks and start trading down but he went after Braylon. I think a lot of teams fall into the trap of using the draft as the sole purpose of improving their team. Tannenbaum uses the draft, trades, free agency and undrafted free agents to improve the team. I hope going forward that he trades down and gets more picks and picks in future years. They do not have any major pressing needs in the short term. The biggest challenge for Tannenbaum is going to be dealing with the salary cap situation.
With no salary cap it will not be an issue keeping those guys. Tanny has done well working cap magic so far, I don't doubt he'd be able to figure something out (if there were a cap), but see the challenge there.
with the rookie cap likely to be instituted in 2011's cba we should see a lot more jr's and draft eligible so's enter the draft (like the nba draft before the one and done rule) ... this should make the quality of the UDFA's this year much better than usual we may not miss those braylon picks this year, after all
I absolutely agree. I think over the next few years, when Sanchez really comes into his own, people will be regarding him as another Bill Polian. You said it. Watch at 1:58. Granted, it was a DB, but still... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCcbkf8QRms&feature=player_embedded
Aside from the lack of drafting depth and the poor job of drafting OLine outside of 06, Tannenbaum has done a great job(I'm giving him the old "Mangini did it" pass for Gholston). That opinion might change after the 2010 draft depending on whether or not the FA rules change, but for right now I would not trade him for any other GM. San Diego delenda est.
