At this very second, there are over 15 players that I view as guys that could contribute well as a passrushing 3-4 outside linebacker (and that's even leaving out a few guys that I've never seen, like Murray St.'s Austen Lane). The Jets are going to be handed a golden opportunity to grab a passrusher in this draft without the need to invest a very high pick. With the limited amount of picks we have, that's a great thing. However, with the way the defense has been coming together, it brings up the question of where the passrusher falls on the Jets list of needs. With the development of depth on our DL (Devito/Pouha), the play of some key veterans (Ellis/Douglas), and big Jenk returning from injury, I think it's reasonable to think that getting a guy that can make plays on the quarterback may be the biggest need for this defense. Everson Griffen, USC*- Has 100% Real tattooed on his biceps. Oh, and he's a freak athlete and a complete badass. Jerry Hughes, TCU- Love his speed, dynamic, but needs to get stronger. Eric Norwood, South Carolina- LB Exp, passrushing master Sergio Kindle, Texas- LB Exp, O-Sackpo potential. Jason Pierre-Paul, USF*- Athletic freak, raw. Jason Worilds, Virginia Tech*- Jersey kid, may be better off as a 43 DE. Greg Hardy, Ole Miss- Great skills, injury plagued. Brandon Graham, Michigan- Exactly like every Michigan 34 OLB. Thadeus Gibson, Ohio State*- He's no Heyward, but good rusher. O'Brien Schofield, Wisconsin- More of a true LB than the others. Ricky Sapp, Clemson- Skinny, but really came on late in his career. Brandon Lang, Troy- Troy defenders are money. Willie Young, NC State- Ever-underrated, athletic w/ long arms. I have a weird feeling he'll be a Jet. Jermaine Cunningham, Florida- Not often noticed with Dunlap around, but more consistent (I know, not saying much). George Selvie, USF- Not really sure what to do with him, but if Rex drafts him I'd believe. Brandon Sharpe, Texas Tech- Really productive, kind of forgotten. Antonio Coleman, Auburn- Fell off the map, but has skills, could be a steal. They're loosely ranked in there, but at this point we're just waiting on workouts. Still could add some more with guys like Greg Romeus and Jeremy Beal still deciding. No matter what happens, I'll have the utmost faith in Rex to find a guy that fits exactly what he's looking for.
It's ok to screw a 1st round pick once in a while... I have faith we can get a good pass rusher in this draft!
I could be wrong but if the Jets go defense in the first round I think it will be a DE they will look for. If not, another corner. I think LB is ok for now.
The 1st pick will go Defense, best available DE or pass rushing LB the second pick will probably go to the other. Depending on Free Agency of course
Well, "they" say that we are screwed in FA this year. Top 8 teams (and we are now one of them after yesterday) can't sign any FA unless they lose one of their own FAs to another team. Either way that would screw us. Of course if a new CBA is signed before FA begins that will change but I don't think anybody believes that's possible.
If a new CBA gets signed we are even more screwed (Leon & Braylon)! There won't be any good FA players this season... maybe A. Thomas if he doesn't want too much money. I think in the last games B. Thomas ha made a case for himself as a good player. Sure, he's not elite (just look at the stats in my sig compared to Trusnik) but he is serviceable. Still I'd like to draft an OLB but I think we are in a great position to go BPA.
This would be the year we just need to resign our own guys anyway. I mean if Sanchez was in year 3 of his development right now is there any way we arent super bowl favorites? we have a great core, and we need to keep our own guys. There are only 3-4 guys I would even consider replacing from our roster Faneca, Woody, Gholston, and Rhodes With Rhodes play of late, I would prefer to keep him and if he continues to play with that chip on his shoulder like he has recently, let him stick around, if he starts to suck, trade him wherever. Gholston is utter trash, use this uncapped year to ditch this fuck so we can get him the hell off our books. Woody and Faneca are basically in the twillight of their careers and to get rid of either one we would really need some high quality replacement waiting in the wings. Which I don't think we have, but at the same time Faneca's contract is so astronomical it might be worth it should we find our selves with a guy say Mike Iupati in the draft. Or we could try and restructure them, but I doubt they would agree to something like that....
Nice thread GH... I'm really hoping Texas A&M's Von Miller declares. I wouldn't be surprised to see Greg Romeus at 3-4 end. GR is already 6'6 270, and he definitely has the frame to bulk up and not lose any speed or athleticism. Let's hope Austen Lane terrorizes at the Senior Bowl. A lot like Romeus, Lane is huge for a 4-3 end...6'7 270. Lane's one of those super athletic ends with a basketball background. He's going to be a really nice project player for someone.
My top 5: 1 - Greg Hardy - Getting the Percy Harvin treatment due to his injuries. Best DE in this class when healthy. 2 - Brandon Graham - Stood out when way back in '07 as a sophomore. High motor DL from a team that's really helped out 3-4 teams. 3 - Jerry Hughes - Good athlete, need to know more. 4 - Brandon Lang - Fluid, big athlete that can rush the passer. School has pumped out some good DE/OLB talent in recent years. 5 - Sergio Kindle - Overrated slightly. I'd probably put Lang over Hughes on a given night. I think we should keep Gholston, because besides for Hardy I don't think any could start and have an immediate impact. We'd just be lining up another guy to call bust. I hope Gholston plays well Sunday and reminds people why he was the 6th overall pick. The team could really use that...
Are you high? if this clown doesn't get cut this offseason.....chaos will ensue. welcome back btw.
Thanks. He probably won't get cut unless Woody doesn't mind taking such a large monetary hit for a 24 year old who'll surely be playing somewhere else. And yea...I probably was high.
He would, it'd just be an uncapped one. Then Gholston can sign for some other team after getting 2 years of coaching and money from us.
I see what you're saying.... but i'd rather Gholston serve gatorade to some other team on the sidelines next year....he's not a football player....he's a con artist. As far as worrying about Woody's money.....if it doesn't affect the salary cap....i could care less....he heats his house with 100 dollar bills.
He played last Sunday, and lots of 3-4 teams unleash their project DE/OLBs during the playoffs. One can pretend to have hope for the guy for at least a couple more weeks....
Give it up Dware...............you're living in fantasyland. Let's hope the Jets look at drafting Brandon Graham......he's going to be a monster.
if Rex "unleashes" Gholston and he morphs into Elvis Dumervil or DeMarcus Ware with his play on Sunday....I will shave "JetsLookingForDWare" into my chest hair and post the pic on TGG.
