Clemens isn't even a development area. You can't take the TB game seriously because the competition was so weak. Put him on the field right now and he'd get eaten alive.
Our receiving corp isn't that weak. If you're wondering what held back our passing game this year, it was Sanchez's development (..obviously). And maybe some questionable playcalling. That's not to say Braylon's hands aren't an issue and Keller has been a little inconsistent, but Cotchery is money, Clowney has been pretty solid in limited play and Leon will be back next year (knock on wood). I have more faith in Clemens than Smith, but he's going to be a RFA this offseason and probably won't be back so the point is moot.
We are debating over what position to list Brad Smith on the depth chart, for a position that he will never play? He was drafted as a "slash" player and we should keep him at that. He tried QB a year ago and it didn't work out.
no Brad Smith stays where he is...he is too good out of the wildcat not too. he gets to keep his place at WR. he has gotten better every game and I think next year he will be a huge playmaker on this team
Why is Clemens the point of comparison? He's gone next season, which will give us an available FA spot if we happen to make it to the AFCC and are limited further in our FA acquisitions.
Are we really breaking out Clemens for this one. I don't want to hear one more word about Clemens unless someone fucks up a FG, in which case I really don't want to hear about Clemens.
You nailed it. Now that we are getting high value from Smith after all these years, are we going to question his roster spot as a WR? Crazy.
The thing is, we've always been getting some kind of production out of him. He was a good ST tackler even as a rookie and when Blaylock went down, Smith did a great job filling in as the lead blocker on KRs. His blocking ability in the slot was always there and now that he's handling the ball he's getting even better. I wouldn't be surprised to see Smith get a long-term contract offer before Edwards.
True. He's been a very good Jet the whole time. I was thinking only of him carrying the football. You're right. His kick-off return against Indy might be our play of the year.
One question: Do we have to keep Brad Smith on the roster as a QB to utilize him as a wildcat QB? If not, what's the problem? I am asking this, because I saw the Chiefs utilizing the wildcat of their own, with their WR throwing a bomb to Thigpen on a TD pass play. *I think that was Dewayne Bowe* Of course, Bowe is not listed as a QB, hence my question. P.S. In all seriousness, if roster spot is the problem CUT KELLEN CLEMENS. Q.E.D.
We might as well just list B. Smith on the roster as "Football Player". There isn't really one position to which he can be restricted.
Smith has been solid all year long. So what if he doesn't catch 20-30 passes that would make him worthy of being a #3 WR? He could be a fourth or fifth WR on a team for the rest of his career and make contributions just like he made this year - great special teams play, option-type QB on some plays from scrimmage, WR on others, kick returner when needed. As for the WR corps, I don't have any idea what the OP is talking about. Holding the Jets back? Once Sanchez develops and his passing yards start going up from 2500 to 3000 to 3500 yards a year, the WR corps will be fine. The guy who is clearly not an NFL player is Woodhead. Anybody notice him today?? I didn't. He is just too small. I predict he will not be on the roster next year.
He was given the playbook 2 years ago and still wound up as a ST/WR. The guy has an arm, bur was a running QB in college, for the most part. That tells me he may have some difficulty with the book.
Brad should contact the micheal jackson estate and find out what it would take to get his skin lightened. i'd LOVE to see brad in the slot. he's so quick off the ball and sanchez seems capable of placing the ball
I don't think this is true. The Jets specifically ruled out using him as a QB when they drafted him. They were converting him to WR and they said as much in the interviews right after they made the pick. They wanted to be sure that Smith knew he was not going to be playing QB at the NFL level so he'd some in with the right attitude. He resisted some as I recall. Sanchez, BTW, has been held back by the WR corps this year more than they have been held back by him. The one professional WR on the squad right now has had a fine year given all the limitations that were put in place when the other WR's could not do their jobs adequately. I'm not saying Sanchez is not at fault but what he had to work with for most of the year is equally at fault. Braylon Edwards has now outright dropped at least two TD passes. Chansi Stuckey was as bad on the sidelines as Cotchery has been good. Either the scheme or the route-running took Dustin Keller out of the game for half the schedule this year. We saw Keller disappear at times last year with Favre throwing the ball to him also, so we know he does that from time to time. David Clowney is a sprinter, not a WR. When he gets behind a DB he can wreak havoc and if you get him the ball on a designed screen he can do something with it but he has all sorts of trouble in almost any other situation. Edit: and almost forgot the point - which is that despite all of the above Brad Smith had 7 catches this year for a 9.0 average.
