With the news of Pete Carroll almost certainly going to Seattle, Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier is reportedly interviewing with Seattle so they can comply with the Rooney rule. This seems like a ridiculous rule at this point.
It'll be a ridiculous rule when teams automatically look at all their potential candidates instead of just the big college coaches, previous head coaches and coordinators. Prior to this rule being put in place the only source of black head coaches was NFL coordinators because colleges, particularly the big colleges, mostly do not hire black head coaches, and obviously without them as a source there were very few black head coaches in the NFL. If the Rooney rule went away tomorrow the NFL would revert to a league that rarely hired a black coach. Now you can argue that blacks only make up 11.7% of the population (or whatever) but they make up about 50% (some surveys say higher - I'm being conservative here) of the NFL population.
Why do you think the NFL would revert to a league that rarely hired a black coach? Hasn't there been enough success by black coaches? This is about winning, right?
I think it is a good rule even if it is simply a formality in many circumstances. if a team fires a coach with another specific coach in mind and a deal essentially in place, like it appears in the Seahawks case, implementing the Rooney Rule is a waste of time. but I think most coaches get fired strictly for poor performance without a specific replacement in mind, and that is why the Rooney Rule is necessary because minority candidates were being ignored in those circumstances and not being given an opportunity to interview and impress GM's and owners.
I don't see how this rule does anything unless all the NFL owners are racist. Also, in 2003 the Lions were fined because no minority candidates would take an interview because it was obvious they were going to hire Steve Mariucci
so, if only a handful of owners are racist, the rule doesn't do anything by forcing them to interview and consider minority candidates? it's only effective if all owners are racist? sorry, that's stupid. that's what the rule is meant to do, force owners who wouldn't consider a minority to do so. just because other owners aren't racist doesn't mean that minority candidates shouldn't have an equal opportunity with all the clubs. the NFL wants all teams coaching opportunities to be open to minorities, not just to be satisfied that maybe 70% of jobs are available and minorities should be happy with that and let the other 30% be available exclusively to white candidates. they want to eliminate racism in the hiring practices of all clubs, not just a percentage.
It's a shame that a guy like Leslie Frazier is gonna waste his time interviewing for the Seahawks position even tho everybody knows Pete Carroll is getting that job. Granted, he doesn't have to take the interview but somebody else would have and that person would have wasted their time. The rule is a bit asinine at this pt, most teams just do the interviews as formalities and thsoe coaches have almost no chance of getting the job
Didn't the Steelers have a replacement for Cowher in mind before being wowed by Tomlin in his interview?
It's also about racism. Ownership in the NFL is 100% white. History shows us that white men prefer white men specifically to handle tasks that they believe are difficult. The Rooney rule came about because there were only 2 black head coaches at the time it was enabled and had been only 6 in NFL history to that point. This was not in some ancient age like 1989, it was in 2003. So obviously the history of discrimination is very recent. People who want affirmative action over-turned are looking only at their own circumstances and feeling discriminated against by a system that overtly rewards others. They ignore the fact that they are the product of a system that covertly discriminated heavily against all non-white males for hundreds of years.
It's a good rule because it gets minority candidates exposure. Forget all of the talk about racism and affirmative action for a minute; it's a confirmed fact that prior to the Rooney Rule minority coaches weren't getting a fair shot. Look, for example, at Sherm Lewis: seemingly every other guy on Holmgren's staff became a head coach except for Lewis, the guy who understood the offense better than anyone else. That's wrong. Even if its a situation like Seattle's now, where Frazier has no legitimate chance at getting the job, it's still an effective rule. Frazier will interview, and then when a legitimately open coaching job becomes available someone from that team will call the Seahawks and ask how Frazier's interview went. If it went well, Seattle will give him his due and it will significantly increase his chances of getting that other head coaching job.
I think it is bad. Not a fan of this rule at all. Terrible rule really. People are being interviewed who don't even have a chance. The talented coaches are the ones who get hired. Doesn't matter what there skin color is.
If these white guys are indeed racist, I'm not sure the rule would be effective anyway. I mean sure, they have to interview a minority candidate, but they don't have to hire anyone they don't want to. I think affirmative action is implemented in a racist way. There has to be a way it can be implemented that more effectively targets those who would hire/not hire based on race.
He's not wasting his time. Most candidates never get hired after their first NFL head coach interview. He is getting experience in the process and like I said in another thread, Paul Allen probably threw him 100 grand or more to let himself be interviewed. He refused yesterday.
I chose Fuck you WSW because I did not have much of an opinion on the rule, and its jsut fun to tell some one to go fuck off everyonce in awhile, even if they don't deserve it.
In all seriousness, the "quick go talk to a black guy so we can hire who we want" thing is bad publicity at this point. The NFL needs to either impress upon the teams that they need to make a serious attepmt at fair interviews or they will face sanctions. Its silly what goes on now.
"Hi I'm the token black interview here to comply with the rooney rule" ...."ok sir, grab your free cup of coffee and take a team logo pen so you can prove you where here if asked by the NFL. Have a nice day" "ummm, thanks, I think" :breakdance:
Frazier should just decline the interview and hold them up for as long as possible. I agree with the idea behind the rule but the way it is implemented is just ridiculous.
