mangini will stay apparently, as per: http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d81592baa&template=with-video-with-comments&confirm=true
Can you act like an adult for once and knock off the childish insults. If you can't make a point that's ok, cursin will fool some of the fools but not those of us that know. The point is if they beat Cle that day they make the playoffs. Cleveland didn't play 4 dregs the final month, they beat 2 teams in the playoff hunt, an Oak team that was playing decent football and KC. He's not a GM, it's not his job to build it. he's shown an ability to coach his team. He took over here and had 2 winning seasons in 3 years, he made Cleveland better this year and has them in the right direction. Is he a great coach? Not yet, he still has alot of things to improve on but he's proven he can be a decent coach in the NFL and he deserved to come back which is shy Holmgren is bringing him back.
http://thebrownsboard.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=9711&st=0  Hilarious. Browns fans, instead of being mad Mangini is coming back, are saying stuff like "Suck it ESPN! We knew he would be back!" Classic stuff. I have never seen so many people HAPPY about Mangini staying. They went (5-11)!!!!!!!!!! If Mangini would have stayed after the Jets went (9-7) people would have been PISSED!!!!!!!
Good for Mangini... I think it will be a good experience for him to get a chance to work with Holmgren in the mix. Providing they have a good draft they should continue to get better next year.
He definitely fought for the job. It'll be interesting to see where that goes. My gut feeling is Holmgren just made a huge mistake and a mess that will have to be cleaned up later, however he also promoted some continuity at the same time.
They won their last 4, they have a million draft picks. The last time they won 4 straight was in the early-mid 90s. They have plenty of reasons to want him back.
you never want to let a coach go after just one season unless the team is an absolute disaster. the Browns looked like they were early on but certainly finished otherwise, so he earned a second season. granted, he is going to need significant improvement to keep his job after that, but giving him the chance to do so is a good call.
Sorry. You are right. I forgot how elite the Steelers, Chiefs, Raiders and Jaguars are. They are going to be great in 2010 after those 4 wins. Technically, it is a 1 game improvement over the 2008 Browns.
Good decision by Holmgren. Mangini made a lot of good moves cleaning out some of the riff-raff and stocking up draft picks so it's good that they're giving him a chance to move forward. I hope he does well.
You have to beat elite teams now? They beat 2 teams that were in the playoff hunt until the final weeks(one would have been in had they not lost to Cle), Oak was playing well when they beat them and KC was competitve in their other games around that cle loss. When you are building you want to end the season on a positive, winning 4 straight is a nice building block and they did a great job acquiring multiple draft picks in what is considered to be a very deep draft.
this is exactly how I feel. While I thought he would get fired this year, I didn't think it was going to be the right decision. Unless a coach is CLEARLY in over his head (aka Raheem Morris, I am still in shock that _he_ gets another year) there is no reason not to give a guy at least 3 years to do his thing. Plus now we get to play him!
I'm just pissed that the Ravens and Steelers get to play Mangini twice next year and we only get to play them once. I'm starting the dump Holmgren club now. Wonder if I can get a trademark on the logo.
A lot of people here still think Mangini is a bad coach. I bet he turns that motherfucker around in a couple of years.... they got a loooot of draft picks too. I'm glad they gave EM more time, Lombardi himself would need a couple of seasons to get it going there.
I will just add one thing, all joking aside, Junk has a point about winning at the end of the season, I believe the Defense led by Rob Ryan and the offensive coordinator which I think is Brian Daboll are going to put together some good schemes. Now we will see Eric Mangini without BS and DS and see how his philosophy will work out in Cleveland. I do have to give him credit for compiling draft picks, I hope every couple of years the Jets adopt the same philosophy and approach the draft with the intent of trading down and compiling draft picks to provide depth to the team.
I'm guessing they see the clusterf*ck coming up in 2011 and decided not to pay somebody big money right now AND eat Mangini's contract. They get to watch him for another year and then make a decision after the work stoppage as to what they want to do. The Browns 3-4 ranked 31st last year in total defense. There's no way in hell that Holmgren is going to put that POS on the field in 2010. If he does he's already got a foot out the door in my opinion.
Not to mention Phil Sewage, Kokinis and Romeo Crennel. Kind of surprised Eric got to stay, really surprised the godawful OC Daboll is still there. Really thought Daboll was going to be the "Token Coach Firing."
