Right. The year after he retired, Tomlin won a Super Bowl with Cowher's team. The guy wanted to run the Tampa2 the minute he took over as HC. I'm sure Lebeau must've said, "Get the fuck outta here". In about 3-4 years, if Tomlin can take the Steelers to another SB, then he deserves the full credit. Until then, I give the props to Cowher for assembling all the pieces to have a smash-mouth football team that contends for the playoffs. I don't want that up there in Buffalo. Let them get Schotty. That would be good.
Funny I said Cowher went (9-7) and missed the playoffs after winning the Super Bowl since the Steelers just did that exact same thing again.
The point is, Cowher will bring in good talent to a team, any team, and coach them well. Maybe I read what you were saying earlier wrong, but if you're comfortable thinking it's gonna take him another 14 years to bring the Bills to contention, you're insane. He will show huge results in about 2-3 years, making them contenders for the Division. I sure as hell don't want that.
FOX Sports' Jay Glazer reports that ex-Chiefs offensive coordinator Chan Gailey has emerged as the frontrunner for the Bills' head coaching vacancy. Barring a breakdown, the hire is reportedly expected within 24-48 hours. Gailey as a serious NFL head coaching target seems odd considering he was fired from his offensive coordinator post before the '09 season and spent the year out of football. But his offense in K.C. during the 2008 stretch run was among the league's most productive despite having current Dolphins third-stringer Tyler Thigpen at quarterback and Mark Bradley at No. 2 receiver. Gailey could provide a quick fix for Buffalo's woeful offense, if nothing else. Classic Bills!
If it is Gailey, I'll wait until the DC is announced. Mike Nolan would be welcome as DC. Why do we always have to take the road with broken glass all over it?
Cowher took over a team in shambles, a team with a proud tradition and the intense coaching pressure that produces. The team had missed the playoffs in 6 of the previous 7 seasons, watching their arch-rivals the Browns make the playoffs 5 times in a row during that string. He took their famous 4-3 front - the front of the "Steel Curtain Defense" and he switched to a 3-4. What do you think of when you think of the Steelers right now? Do you think of the "Steel Curtain" or do you think of their great 3-4? Bill Cowher made the playoffs the first 6 seasons in a row that he coached the Steelers in the new 3-4 that he brought in. He took them to the Super Bowl for the first time in 16 years in his 4th season. That's what Bill Cowher did. He may be past it now. He's 51 years old, and coaches - like players - really start to lose their effectiveness as they get to the mid 50's. Not all of them but a lot. He won't have the Rooneys to work with in turning the next team around (although the Rooneys were there for 6 out of 7 non-playoff years before he arrived and he was not.) If I need a coach I would still hire him in a minute flat at whatever price I could get him that was not just absurd. I'd hire him to be the owner proxy (the Dan Rooney for the franchise) and let him hire a director of football operations and a coach. I'd hire him as GM. He's that good.
Have you ever been to that city? They got what they deserve. They have a terrible fan base. I can't tell you how many Jets/Bills games I've gone to that I've been spit at, beers thrown at me and my life threatened. If they didn't sell season tickets for 250 bucks a year and you weren't able to get tickets for 20-30 bucks, they wouldn't have any fans at the game. Screw em.
I'm sure you were just minding your own business and not talking trash huh? Every fan base is loaded with fools. My guess is you shot your mouth off to the fools, who in turn, acted foolish. I've been to plenty of opposing stadiums before, none more hostile than Jets and Giants in Giants stadium. I have learned to cheer without getting in their faces about it, not once was I even remotely accosted. I was a season ticket holder for the Bills right before I moved to NYC, and anytime an opposing fan got the boot, it wasn't because they had opposing colors, but rather, ran their mouth like a fool. My suggestion is learn to tone it down or learn martial arts.
I wrote in a Georgia Tech forum that Gailey can make a poor to mediocre team overachieve, but he doesn't know how to get a good team to rise and meet their expectations. He won't get the Bills to the next level, especially not in the AFC East. He had one flash in the pan season in 1984 at Troy when they were in Division II, but he hasn't had what you would call a successful career anywhere else.
I wear Jets gear and I don't say anything until someone says something to be. The fan base is disgraceful. I've been to 10 other stadiums in the NFL to see the Jets play and the Bills are by far the worst. I went to Bills/Jets games for 17 years and won't go to another game there. It's not enjoyable. I lived in Buffalo for 4 years ( I now live in Rochester) and am a Sabres season ticket holder. There's a huge difference between going to a Bills and Sabres game. I've never seen a Flyers or Maple Leafs fan get jumped at a Sabres game. I've seen plenty of Jets fans assaulted at Bills games.
