Key averaged 76 recs a year for us, Chrebet had at least 76 recs ONE year in his career(1996) Key averaged 1027 yds a season for us, Chrebet had ONE 1,000 + yd season. Key averaged 8 TD recs a year for us, Chrebet had at least 8 only 3 times in his career. Key made Ray Lucas look like an NFL QB. Key had the greatest postseason game in the history of the NY Jets. As far as 3rd down recs. Let's compare their 4 years together: 1996: 3rd down recs: Key- 14, 12 for 1st downs, 1 TD, 86 % conversion rate WC-31 recs, 21 for 1st down, 2 TDs, 68% conversion rate 1997: 3rd down recs: Key-18 recs, 16 for 1st dopwns, 1 TD, 89% conv. rate WC-29 recs, 19 for 1st downs, 1 TD, 66% conv. rate 1998: 3rd down recs: Key-23 recs, 21 for 1st downs, 7 TDs, 91% conv. rate WC-26 recs, 23 for 1st downs, 4 TDs, 88% conv. rate 1999: 3rd down recs: Key-29 recs, 27 for 1st downs, 5 TDs, 93% conv. rate WC-12 recs, 8 for 1st downs, 2 TDs, 67% conv. rate totals: Key-84 recs, 76 for 1st downs, 14 TDs, 90% conv. rate WC-98 recs, 71 for 1st downs, 9 TDs, 72% conv. rate It's great Wayne had 14 more 3rd down recs but Key had more 1st down conversions which is more important. I love Wayne, I appreciate all he did for us. he wasn't close to being as good as Key. Key was all about winning, yeah he was a loudmouth but he was a winner. He and Chrebet made each other better, neither held it against the other on the field that they hated each other. They were both outstanding professionals but 10 years after Key and we are still seraching for a WR as good as he was. Braylon has all the same gifts and I think he can fit into that role but we'll see. Where was key talent over production? Jet #s: 62 games played, 305 recs, 4108 yds, 13.5 yards per rec., 31 TDs Average by year: 76 recs, 1027 yds, 8 TDs Average by game: 4.9 recs, 66 yds, .5 TDs Chrebet's Jet #s: 152 games, 580 recs, 7365 yds, 12.7 yds per rec., 41 TDs Wayne played 90 more games as a Jet than key and only had 10 more TDs. Average by year(I will remove '03 and '05 since he played half a year): 49 recs, 629 yds, 3.6 TDs Average by game: 3.8 recs, 48 yds, .27 TDs Let's look side by side w/ key: Average by year: Key: 76 recs, 1027 yds, 8 TDs WC: 49 recs, 629 yds, 3.6 TDs Which is better? Average by game: Key: 4.9 recs, 66 yds, .5 TDs WC: 3.8 recs, 48 yds, .27 TDs Which is better? Oh and Key was a #1 facing double teams every game putting up those #s.
I would have to say Toon because he is the first wide i was able to remember and really like. Chrebet will always have a special place in my heart because he was a scrappy little pain in the ass for other teams.
Hey guys, Patriots fan here, I come in peace.......... "Can't we all get along ?" BTW my All time favorite Jet is Richard Todd. Yes, I remember the mud bowl, saw every minute of it. One of the greatest games I've ever seen, an absolute classic that lasts in memory for a lifetime. The Killer B's, AJ Duhe and the fumble. I mean a memoric game that sticks with those that remember it. My favorite Jet wideout, give me #88 Al Tooooooooooooon. Loved Toon. Now onto today: Hey look, the Bengals are going to lay down like dogs, don't you worry, the post season is yours. There is no doubt in my mind that the Jets will win both games against the Bengals. We'll beat the Ravens. Then it will be up to you to take out the overrated Colts. You guys can do it. Revis takes out Wayne, you guys shut down the run and they are done. We'll go to SD and win an absolute nail biter on a late field goal and guess what ? You guys visit Gillette for the AFCCG, I mean Happy Year guys, let's get this done !
What's the purpose in averaging stats? Straight up total stats from 96-98 Chrebet: 217 rec 2791 yds 14 TDs Johnson: 216 rec 2938 yds 23 TDs Very comparable. Johnson height led way to more end zone production. Chrebet was looked to more on 3rd downs. LMAO. Key was all about winning? What did he ever win? Remained professional? Did you forget he wrote a book complaining about Chrebet after he was outplayed by him? That dude's ego always far outreached his ability. That was his problem. Why do you think the Jets shopped him around? He wasn't good for the team, played only 4 years here, and in those 4 years the number 1 overall pick was putting up very similar stats to a 5'8" undrafted guy. Advantage Chrebet. We'll have to agree to disagree on this. Keep holding your candle for a guy who never cared about this organization. It doesn't surprise me you are enamored by Braylon.
Coach Walker was my gym teacher in high school. He's the reason I'm a Jets fan. Tough having a conversation with the guy, though. You can never tell if he's talking to you or the kid next to you. I think he recently got bumped down to Park View. (My elementary school). Apparently he was hitting on some underage females. Probably bullshit; historically, Kings Park School District has a problem with black teachers.
So we remove 1999 for Keyshawn, why? We left in Key's rookie year vs. Wayne's 2nd year so why do we take out 1999? I averaged to show you who was clearly better and I showed per game b/c there were some injury years. Anyone who watched those 2 play and anyone who looks at the #s can easily tell you who was better. it's not debateable. Key helped us win our 1st ever AFC East title, Key helped TB win their only Super Bowl. He played 11 years and was on 3 teams w/ losing records(one he only played 10 games), he played the best individual game of any Jet in postseason history. Professional ON THE FIELD where it matters. He didn't let his hatred of Chrebet affect him and to Wayne's credit he didn't let his hatred of Key affect him. They were a great tandem, Key actaully helped make Wayne look like a pro bowl caliber WR for one year(1998). The jets traded him b/c they had a philosophy of not extending guys before their deals were up and Key wanted to much money much like we did w/ laveranues Coles and Santana Moss in the years after Key. Key never cared for the organization? he only gave maximum effort and prduced in his 4 years as well as any WR in Jets history. He wanted more money just like Chrebet did when Chrebet's deal was coming up in the early 00s he floated out the idea he'd go play w/ the team he loved growing up- the New York GIANTS. All these guys deserve as much money as they can get and they all try to get as much as they can, Watyne wouldn't have taken less money to stay a Jet so don't kid yourself.
We have alot of young guys voting here, but if it wasn`t for O`brien leave TOON out to dry and getting nailed on almost every play he would be in the HALL OF FAME! He was every bit as talented as JERRY RICE!
I'm sad to say I'm too young to have seen any of these guys, or at least I didn't become a fan soon enough. I do think it is safe to say that McCareins is easily the most hated though.
Apparently i'm the second- oldest guy on GG- boy does THAT feel great! my favorite will always be Don Maynard. i'm looking at his jersey right now, next to an autographed ball and a 16x20 pic of him making an acrobatic catch against SD. His 1968 Championship game performance in icy wind- tunnel Shea was unbelievable. Check out both QB's stats for that game! Here's a name from the past: Richard Caster. 6'5", incredibly fast and terrible hands. Anyone remember the 1972 Colts game where he caught an 80 yard TD pass from JN? Unitas methodically drove the Colts for a score; after the kickoff JN immediately threw a 79 yard TD pass to Caster. Amazing! he was moved to TE the following season and had a productive career for them, drops notwithstanding. One more name- Art Powell. look him up; during the three Titan ("because a Titan's bigger than a Giant!") years he was much better than Maynard in TDs and ypc. I think if we changed the heading to most dangerous WR we'd have to go with WW. every pass to him was a potential TD.
Jesus fuck, this ought to be a bannable offense. The name is "Wesley" goddammit. "Wes" is what you call some Patriot homo who catches a million four yard passes and couldn't even see Walker's jock with three good eyes.
Wesley Walker, still remember the Wesley Walker I got when I was a kid. It was way too big and I wore it till it was way too small.
TOOOOOOOON, I still remember that chant at Jets games when he would make a catch. Just the fact that Wesley Walker was legally blind in one eye and still one of the better NFL recievers in the 80's always impressed me. Chrebet is the fan favorite and was mr clutch. I guess I'd have to go with Toon by a hair over Chrebet. Maynard was probably the greatest Jets receiver but played before football was a big TV sport so doesn't get the due he most likely deserves.
My favorite is Chrebet but I was always a huge fan of JoJo Townsell, he wasn't the greatest WR in history in fact he was arguably very mediocre but he was electric of KR and was an avegare at best WR. It was also when I was a kid so hearing the way the PA Announcer would say his name was cool to me. I also really liked Terrence Mathis but he wasn;t around very long. I remember Walker , Toon and Moore but to me Chrebet was always the guy. He wouldn't win the debate as greatest WR but in terms of favorites he had it all. A great story, gave his all for the team and a local guy. I've always felt that if Toona nd Walker had played together in their primes they would have been every bit if not better then any other WR duo in the league at the time. And if Joe Walton knew how to build an Oline they'd each probably have a ring or two.
I can't believe the only one with a ring and the only one in the HOF is last. Must be the age (I'm 24).
