I am happy with the signing of Bay they had to do something big for the Fans. Now make the smaller moves that always prove to make or brake your season. I agree get sheets because he has shown he can be a #1 OR #2 (when healthy) then I would also go after pinaro. We need depth for when our pitching falls apart again. WHo's out there for first base?
In about 3 years the Mets will be kicking themselves for this Bay contract. It's gonna be painful to watch him CitiField's spacious outfield by the end of this deal. Plus, he clearly doesn't want to be a Met which could cause problems down the line. I really think that they would've been better off spending a few extra million for Holliday. But then, I'm not the one writing the checks.
While I'm not super excited over the signing, Bay fills the need of a big righty bat in LF. He is an average defender with limited range, but I'd rather have that in LF then RF with all of it's shitty quirks out in Citifield. I think Bay will have his usual production for the first 2-3 years of the contract (Maybe a slight drop in HR's and a slight jump in doubles). I would like to see the Mets take a flier on Sheets. As has been mentioned, he can be a great pitcher when healthy, incentive laden contract is the way to go. Also, I'd like to see the mets takes a chance on pineiro, who was very effective with groundballs last year. If he continues that trend, he could be a very valuable #3.
Also, I like Bay over Holliday because Holliday needs protection in order to be effective. Bay is the protection that guys like Wright and Beltran need right now.
. Hahaha, In hindsight the argument I had with LTS over the impact LaRoche would have on the Red Sox was hilarious considering he was there for like a week. LaRoche is available but his demands are insane. I don't remember offhand but they were way out of proportion especially considering DeRosa only got 12 million over 2 years. If Nady is healthy he can serve as a platoon with Murphy. Otherwise Delgado might return.
why do people keep talking baout bay's def? A) we have the best fielding CF in carlos beltran to help cover the gaps. b) rf is worst than lf b/c of that deep right center field and quirky wall c)not much different in lf than it was at shea
I like the signing. Hopefully the fact we didn't go over the top for Holliday leaves money for pitching.
http://www.wfan.com/topic/play_window.php?audioType=Episode&audioId=4237228 Good Interview with Jose Reyes, by Fatcessa. Fatcessa seemed to try to goad him into saying something negative, but Jose seemed psyched.
And Beltran didn't want to be a Met at first. The idea that because he waited to try to get a better deal he's going to be unhappy is to me more than a little ridiculous. People were complaining that the Mets were bidding against themselves, and then when it becomes clear that they weren't they're blamed for not throwing more money at him to make him want to come more? Come on.
At least for me, the feeling that Bay doesn't want to be a Met comes less from the delay in signing and more from his comment (according to Peter Gammons) that he'd rather play in Beirut than Queens. Hopefully for the Mets they don't follow this deal up by doing something truly stupid like caving to Joel Pineiro's demands.
The ironic part about Bay, the guy played for the Pirates, I mean talk about a loser organization, I know the Mets have not been the ideal model for winning but C'mon Man!
I think it was something Gammons sensationalized and came up with all by himself, considering we had an offer on the table for a while but nothing came of it, when in reality all Bay was doing was waiting out to try and get the best possible offer. When it became obvious that the best offer he'd received came from the Mets, he accepted.
Not a fan of Gammons. I have the same feeling as you, i feel like Bay took his time with the decision, and made sure it was right for him as well.
