Mays' size and athleticism are what intrest me as a prospect for the Jets. Not as a pure safty but as another hybird type for ryan's defense. Playing the Doug Plank role in our defense he could be something special. Not as a high first ournder for sure, but a low first early second type pick then he would be an interesting one to look at.
I wouldn't take him in the first round if we had the 32nd pick. I really wouldn't be comfortable with the Jets picking him anywhere earlier than the middle of the second round...even then. We already have one great physical specimen with football IQ/motivational questions. We really do not need another.
Yeah, I've seen Mays play a few dozen times. He has faults, would be a Top-3 pick if he didn't, but his athleticism and potential make him a good pick in the 20-25 range IMO. A lot players with that type of ability either have work ethic or character issues, Mays has neither. People will hate the pick, but I think we're in a position to take a guy like Mays this year and with Rex teaching him, he could be the best safety in football. It's a moot point though because Mays will be long gone. I was going under the assumption that McDaniel was staying in school. He's a stud.
Do you never take another chance because one did not work out? A win this weekend and we are pickin some where in the 20's. MAny of the coveted players will be long gone and we are turning to guys that are on the second level of our Wants/Needs. Mays falls into that catagory for me.
If we win on Sunday night, we'll more than likely play the Bengals again...another game this team CAN win. That would gives the Jets a pick in the high 20s. I can definitely see us trading back if there isn't a big time need on the board. Players I'd like to see become Jets if we stay put: Texas A&M's Von Miller (3-4 OLB) Notre Dame's Golden Tate (WR) Tennessee's Dan Williams (NT) Rutger's Anthony Davis' (OT) Idaho's Mike Iupati (OL) North Carolina's Marvin Austin (3-4 DE) Michigan's Brandon Graham (3-4 LB) Michigan's Donovan Warren (CB) Boise State's Kyle Wilson (CB) Clemson's DeAndre McDaniel (S)
If you haven't heard of him yet, check out USF's Jason Pierre-Paul. JPP could be the next Demarcus Ware. JetsLookingForJPaulPierre?
Good Call E..... I added him to my Top 50 recently with Romeus. JPP is an animal and exciting to watch. Can't wait till April and see which DE we draft!!
Jets win Sunday early 20's (22ish), beat the Bengals in Cincy and mid to late 20's. I like most of the players you mentioned....except Davis, but would be a good value at the end of the rd. Any other year these players would be at least Mid-First rd picks, a few will fall into rd 2.
Take a look at E's list below. I would much rather have any of those players than Mays. Williams, Davis and Tate especially. Mays is a project and too much a luxury pick for the Jets right now when there are plenty of players on the board that can fill a need. We already have a a physical phenom who doesn't know what he is doing on defense(Gholston), and a safety who is hot or cold from game to game(Rhodes). Mays is far that the bottom of the list for me in terms of players I want to see in Green and White.
Brandon Ghee is a middle of the pack corner prospect right now. The kid can play, but he won't be drafted over many corner prospects unless he runs an amazing 40. I've never liked Pat Robinson. He gets absolutely worked by tall wideouts (see Miami game) and he's not THAT fast. Trevard Lindley is going to fall, but it has nothing to do with his ability. He's just been banged up this season. Lindley can develop into a solid #2 corner.
I'm less than thrilled with this draft's CBs. It's Joe Haden and then a big drop off. There should be a much better group of CBs in 2011. Patrick Peterson, LSU Brandon Harris, Miami Kareem Jackson, Bama Janoris Jenkins, Gators (another Florida thug) Brandon Burton, Utah (great talent, runs 4.3 range with good size, maybe better than Sean Smith) Mario Butler, Georgia Tech (I like what I've seen of Butler) Chimdi Chekwa, OSU Javes Lewis, Oregon. Let me tell you about Javes Lewis, I've seen him play in person. My Brother-Law lives in Tustin, CA (Orange County). I try to get out there every couple of years, beautiful area, not too far from where Sanchez grew up.. I went to a Tustin High School game about 4 years ago and saw Lewis playing RB...a great athlete. I believe Lewis got over 200 yards that game. He also was playing Safety on defense and had some big hits. Clearly one of the best Football players on the field. Tustin also produced Sam Baker and Frostee Rucker...a good program with a pipeline to USC. Don't know why Lewis didn't get an invite to USC, he was a special player.
I also mentioned them in my first post along wiht Mays. I'm not a huge Mays supporter, but not as down on him as a few of you seem to be.
