We have a good defense, but it's a matter of time (and soon) the age and lack of depth is going to catch up.
While I agree to a point, and Love Dan Williams asa NT prospect in the mid first, Tate is a dynamic talent who would be a great weapon for sanchez. Depth, and I mean depth and not young talent, an be added through free agence like is was this year with the signing of Douglas. If we drafted Tate in round one and go Dline or Oline in round two I would not be upset at all.
idk I cant say I know enough about him. But I have to say I like Damian Williams alot and it appears his stock is slipping, in part probably due to a lack of great qb play but I like him he is a good route runner and is a really fundamentally sound receiver
Woah.. Polished.. Ok, maybe. You can not deny that Harvin is a much more gifted athlete, and has far more skill traits to his game. Harvin may have more to overcome in the "technical" aspect of this game coming out, but as far as pure skill and talent, I don't even think it is close.
No, not maybe. Definitely. ...like I said before, it's obvious to me you don't watch Notre Dame football. Golden Tate is a much, much better receiver. Harvin is a versatile playmaker, but he's not a complete receiver like Tate is. Harvin has more upside, but not much more. Skill traits? Golden Tate was a very, very good running back in high school. Harvin and Tate were very similar recruits. Tate had back to back 1,000 yard seasons at Notre Dame. This year, he had nine games with over 100 yards (two over 200 yards). Harvin may be a little faster, but route running is the key to getting open, not speed.
^ Based on your glowing endorsement of Tate, does that mean he has cracked your top 5 wr prospects? Does he grade out as a first rounder in your eyes? I like what i saw of tate this year, specifically that hail mary grab he had around 3 guys. that was nuts, amazing hand strength and a complete refusal to lose on that play.
Here's my pre-combine top five: USC's Damian Williams - best route runner in college football. His experience in a pro-style offense makes him my top prospect Notre Dame's Golden Tate - just seems to do everything right...strong hands, great hops, excellent speed, and perfect routes. Georgia Tech's Demaryius Thomas - big, athletic wideout. BeBe's lack of experience in a passing offense is a huge question mark. Illinois' Arrelious Benn - poor numbers this season because of poor quarterback play. Benn has the most upside out of any WR in this draft...after the combine, he will shoot up boards. OK State's Dez Bryant - physical receiver, but has concentration issues a lot like a Mike Crabtree or a Braylon Edwards. Bryant drops more passes than he should. He also plays in the dreaded spread option offense, where he's asked to run a lot of option routes. Bryant may have trouble getting open in the NFL. His suspension is also going to hurt his stock.
And the fact he played with Sanchez (plus he's his best friend) makes him even more attractive... question is, can he play in the slot? He looks more like a Cotchery guy (with more talent).
Someone on this board compared D. Williams to Reggie Wayne. Williams runs great routes and has good hands. I noticed studying film, he helps his QB, he adjusts and comes back to the ball. Williams will probably be a solid #2 receiver in the NFL. The idea Williams and Sanchez are friends should have nothing to due with the Jet's 1st Rd selection. Warm and Fuzzy endings are for chick flicks.
Let me throw a little curveball in here. Remember a couple of years ago when the Titans drafted Chris Johnson in the first round when they didn't really need a RB. I think were in a similar situation here. What if we drafted C.J Spiller? Before everybody freaks out, here me out. First of all, he's a better talent than Leon. Plus with Leon wanting 6 mill a year and coming off a broken leg. Who knows how well he would come back from that. With Spiller you get a real weapon for our offense. That would ease things up for Sanchez.
I agree with drafting Spiller. I dsagree with letting Leon walk though. Leon is a special player and should be brought back. We need to replace TJ with SPiller. TJ is consistent and steady. The Jets are likely going to have to endure the growing pains of Sanchez for the next 1-2 years. What they need at the running back position to offset his issues is a dynamic playmaker. What they need is Spiller, not TJ. Imagine if we follow up drafting Spiller with the drafting iof the best available WR in round 2. Our offensive weapons would include: Greene, Spiller, Leon, Keller, Edwards, Cotchery and whoever we draft at wideout in round 2.
Well with drafting Spiller you would be able to let Leon walk. Leon is one my favorites and we're def. missing his ability right now, but he's still gonna want that 6 mill a year contract. Say we end up in the mid teens in the draft and we pick Spiller, then were getting a younger cheaper and more talented Leon. I don't believe we need another WR at least not with one of our first two picks. The Jets biggest needs are : DL, OL, OLB, and secondary. But lets say are first two picks are Spiller and Norwood. Granted we didnt fill our biggest needs. but were picking up two damn good players. We do need a pass rusher badly.
Every year there will be some mouth watering RB... next year will be no difference with all the Juniors coming out. We should concentrate on the BPA within our needs IMO. With TJ, Greene and Leon we are set for another year. What, you want to base a run first team on a rookie RB, a 2nd year RB and a guy coming back a broken leg? We NEED TJ's experience for another year... I also think many of you guys are understating Leon's contribution... prior to the 2009 draft we all wanted a TJ + Leon combination... having a TJ + Greene + Leon trio is already a luxury. Everyone is taking the Titans as an example... come on guys!!! They had 2 (not three) ok RBs... one of them ended up in the UFL at 28yrs old and the other is strictly a goal-line back... that isn't exactly a pro bowl backfield! RB was a need for them especially considering how much they like to run the ball. Back to the WRs... look at what teams like San Diego are doing! You need as many serviceable WRs as you can get... and right now I think we need a guy like Tate. We have a big fast WR (Edwards), a reliable #2 guy (Cotchery), a downfield speedster (Clowney), another big target (B. Smith)... we need a good slot WR and Tate is the best one out there. Especially since Keller is good in "open space" but he isn't the reliable targe a rookie QB needs.
OK well I agree that RB is not a need as of today. But Leons contract is up, and he's coming off a season ending injury. TJ's contract is about up and he's getting up there in age. Greene I think will be solid for us, just not sure about his hands. Just was thinking about how explosive our offense could be with a real weapon like Spiller. I wouldn't be against it if we drafted him. I would however be more against drafting Tate. I feel a slot reciever is not holding this offense back. We might possibly have a Welker on our team already. If Woodhead doesn't turn out to be anything then I'll be the first to say i'm wrong. But the guy has just switched over to a reciever. Granted we've been trying the Smith experiment for a while now. At least Woodhead has better hands than Smith, and he's quick.
So you're willing to put more money on Woodhead becoming a good slot than Leon coming back from the injury he's had? Don't get me wrong, I'm a Woodhead fan but I don't think he'll ever be that good for us. Useful gadget yes but nothing more... Tate on the other hand is a complete reciever and could quickly become a QBs best friend by always finding a way to be open through the middle. Sanchez needs this kind of weapon... the only reliable reciever he has is Cotchery right now and he could sure use another one. PS Just to clarify, Edwards is very useful and I'm sure he'll be retained but he is by no means reliable nor is he a great route runner.
I was looking through the internet to see if someone felt the same as I do... http://www.ganggreennation.com/2009/12/15/1202571/looking-at-the-2010-nfl-draft these are the EXACT reasons I want Tate with a Jets uniform.
Well who's to say that Woodhead can't become a decent slot. I'm not gonna put money on it. But until Leon gets back on the field and is under contract. I will preach for Spiller over Tate. We have a good #1 reciever right now. Granted he has his mental lapses. But is still our most talented big play reciever. We have a very good #2 reciever. We have a solid athletic pass catching TE. I'm not against having too many weapons for Sanchez, but would rather have a very dangerous RB who wouldn't break the bank for us. As compared to what our current RB's are wanting This discussion is pointless right now. Until we have a better OC who knows how to utilize the weapons that are on our current roster.
I agree with that but I also think that, no matter who the OC is, we don't have enough guys on the recieving side of the ball that can be successfull down the middle. Keller can't do it by himself, Edwards needs a map to run the right route through the middle and Cotchery isn't physical enough. Tate (copuled with Keller) can give us that... we'll wait and see what happens
