Definitely a defensive lineman should be a big priority, but I wouldn't be upset with a first round WR. There are a lot of good receivers available in the draft this year, and one of Arrelious Benn, Golden Tate and Brandon Lafell (very underrated prospect) will be available when they pick.
After loking at team needs and available players I say trade out of rd 1 (NE style ) and get BPA and a DE in rd 2. I wouldn't be opposed to WR Williams or Tate if they fall to the beginning of rd 2. Iw trade back near the end of rd 1 then get Norwood. I wanted Williams (NT) a lot but looking at Pouha play I'm confident in our backups...
Mambo...I understand your reasoning, but the age of our D-line is a concern. Pouha is 30 and is an average player......upside is extremely limited. Our D-line needs an infusion of "very good, talented youth". Also, Rex can move players around on the line they don't have to be just a NT all the time.
It's looking like this team will finish at 7-9. The 7-7 AFC South teams (Houston, Tennessee, and Jacksonville) should all finish 8-8. The Niners, who are 6-8, play Detroit and St. Louis. They should finish 8-8. The only teams with a higher pick: 1. St. Louis 2. Detroit 3. Kansas City 4. Cleveland 5. Tampa Bay 6. Seattle 7. Washington 8. Chicago 9. Buffalo 10. Carolina Oakland and Carolina should finish with the same record as the Jets (7-9), but Carolina's strength of schedule is better than ours...Oakland's isnt though. The Jets should pick anywhere between 10 to 12...in an extremely deep draft, this gives our team a lot of trade bait if they want to move back. If we stay put, here's some guys that COULD be available: CB Joe Haden (I can dream) NT Terrance Cody (A real possibility in the 10 to 12 range) S Earl Thomas (Next best safety behind Eric Berry) CB Donovan Warren (Reminds me a lot of Darrelle Revis with his physical style of play) WR Dez Bryant (Not a need, but if Cody and Thomas are gone, he'll be the BPA) OT Charles Brown (More a left tackle prospect, may be this year's Jason Smith?) OT Bryan Bulaga (Probably the best right tackle prospect in the draft) OT Bruce Campbell (HUGE tackle prospect with injury concerns) RB CJ Spiller (The most explosive/dangerous player in 2010's draft) RB Ryan Mathews (Every-down back, should be this year's Donald Brown) DE Everson Griffen (The most physically gifted player that I've ever seen) DE Carlos Dunlap (Darkhorse...if he kills the competition at the combine, he'll go top five)
If we go into 2010 with the same offensive line group we have now and one of them gets injured, Mark Sanchez is going to take a significant step backwards. Gord.
With a top rank defense in the league, Jenkins coming back, Pouha proving that he is more than just serviceable as a starter and a struggling offense, Jets fans pick a NT as the #1 need. I'll never get my fellow fans.
Kris Jenkins coming back as the same type of player is highly unlikely. He'll still be a very good nose tackle, but for how long? The guy will be 31 next year and believe it or not, Sione Pouha is older than Jenkins. You think we're set at the position, but we're really not. In this league, the best teams stay young at key positions. I think Jenkins has about two or three seasons left in the tank, but his health was always a concern. Bringing in a Mount Cody as his successor would be a huge move for this defense. I can't really remember, but I'm pretty sure I voted for a defensive end. I'd really like to see a big time 3-4 end drafted by the Jets. Shaun Ellis can't play forever. Marques Douglas is a stop gap. Mike DeVito is clearly a rotation guy. Ropati Pitoitua is no lock to make this team in 2010. We need a defensive end more than anything right now.
Pouha didn't enter the league until he was 26, he is a young 31 and has proven to be a quality backup. Our DL has been great, Ellis is showing no signs of slowing down. I'd rather bring in a guy like Jolly and use the draft to focus on our real needs, like OL, OLB & S which are the three biggest immediate needs on the team.
The struggling offense is a result of having a rookie QB, the offense will improve as he does. Do we need O line depth? Sure, but not in the first round. Our defense has proven several times this season that it can be run on, that starts with the D line. I personally don't think NT is nearly as big a need as DE.
Well, I'd hope the guy we draft would be the starter and either Faneca or Woody would take the bench. Somebody like Mike Iupati could make Alan Faneca expendable. Mike Iupati is an animal. You all know that I watch Fresno State very closely and a particular play stands out for me when thinking about Iupati. Against Fresno this season, he pulled on a toss play and pancaked a 255 linebacker, got to the next level and flat out destroyed a safety. Iupati plays with a nasty attitude. ...one of the best pull guards I've seen in a long time. (In the next few days, Fresno State's All-American guard Andrew Jackson might declare. Jackson is the next Logan Mankins - Iupati is the best lineman in the WAC, but Jackson is a very close second)
