1. who do you guys think will be the best 3-4 OLB around when we pick be? 2. would you guys pick another one after we drafted gholston? im open for rex to find his suggs
I'm starting to think its our biggest need. As good as our D is, we don't have that many sacks. Kindle, or Norwood.
Let's get this straight!! Some of you guys want to spend a 1st rd pick on a DE that need to be converted to a 3-4 OLB???? Hellooooooooo?? Gholston was a project...you don't draft projects at #6. There are some good 3-4 OLB prospects that have played the position or have showed the ability to play OLB in the NFL. No Rd 1 projects please!!!
Gholston not working out had nothing to do with him having to switch to the 3-4 and everything to do with him not giving a shit about football. Almost all of the 3-4 olbs in the league played DE in college, it doesn't have to be a 1st round pick but we took Gholston because it addressed a big need, with him not working out its still just as big of a need.
What a myopic POV.........it damn well did have alot to do with him converting to a 3-4 NFL LB, a position he never played. You're right, Gholston is laid back, football isn't important to him. Gholston also NEVER had the physical abiltiy to play 3-4 OLB in the NFL. Gholston has terrible lateral movement and some of the stiffest hips I've ever seen. Even Westoff has said in his Press Conferences, "Gholston is limited in special teams based on lacking physical skills". VG is a great straight ahead, bull rush player. The know it-all DWare......swore VG played 3-4 at OSU and was going to be a great player for the Jets.....wrong on both accounts. VG needs to be a 4-3 DE to salvage his career....it probably won't be the Jets. I preached the last 2 years way before VG was drafted, that he didn't have the body, skills and ability to be a competent 3-4 OLB. Back on topic.......I don't want a converted player in Rd 1. I'd take a Brandon Graham (has shown the ability to play OLB)....but not in rd 1.
Keep an eye on these guys... South Carolina's Eric Norwood Texas A&M's Von Miller Florida's Jermaine Cunningham Auburn's Antonio Coleman The forgotten man: USF's George Selvie My sleeper: San Jose State's Carl Ihenacho
Eric Norwood would look nice in green, and he's shown he can get after the QB from a 2 or 3 point stance.
Norwood has an awesome motor. That's what stands out the most to me when I watch the kid play. His height will scare some teams, but look what Elvis Dumervil is doing in Denver.
Good list......to add a few: Ricky Sapp, Clemson...if healthy a very good player. Cameron Sheffield, Troy (D-Ware's school).....a semi- sleeper that is quite productive Auston English, Oklahoma...always hurt....could have been a top player. Huge upside if he can stay on the field. Dexter Davis........guy had a down year in 09. Was a freak in 08.
Guys let's not forget Brandon Graham.....IMO, the Big Ten's best defensive player. Graham played with his hand down most of the time, but unlike VG, has the ability to play 3-4 OLB. Graham lead the nation in Tackles for loss. The guy passes the eye test...he's a football player.
It has become painfully obvious that a pass rushing OLB is by far our biggest need, this past Sunday confirms it. I'm not sure it has to be with a first round pick but certainly within first two picks. I wouldn't hesitate though to grab one first if there is a guy we like available.
I have to agree... at first I thought we needed a NT but I think a Jenkins - Pouha rotation will hold up this coming year (we can keep Greene or draft someone in the late rds as an insurance), DE talent has dropped and I think we can get a talented guy in rd 2 (except if we have a shot at Hayward in rd 1)... at this point our biggest priority is drafting an OLB. Problem is except for Norwood there doesn't seem to be any 1st rd talent (as of now, things will change a lot going forward). I'm so pissed at the Gholston selection... If we'd have gotten McKelvin like our scouts wanted in that draft we'd be the best DB team in the NFL and not have that asshole on our team. I'm rooting for him to get cut this off-season.
Jerry hughes will be drafted before Norwood i dont get why nobody talks about him 11.5 sacks this season 2-time all american, i think he will rise after the combine when he runs his 40.
Eric Norwood is also a two time All-American and he plays in the best conference in college football. He's also been all SEC all four years in college. Jerry Hughes is a good player, but it's a lot easier for him to stand out because he plays in against weaker competition***. Hughes was INVISIBLE against Clemson. 3 of those 11.5 sacks were against I-AA Texas State I don't want a project player with our first round pick. Norwood is a much more versatile player...he's shown that he can be a dominant force at 4-3 end, 3-4 OLB, 4-3 ILB, 3-4 ILB, and 4-3 OLB. The guy's lined up EVERYWHERE for the Gamecocks. (***Mid-major RB Ryan Mathews is a rare case because he did most of his damage against non Big Six teams)
Norwood is more versatile but i dont think he's going to be a better pass rusher than Hughes and thats why ultimately Hughes will be be taken before him. The fact that Norwood plays in the SEC has nothing to do with it look where Demarcus Ware and Osi Umenyiora came out of Troy, Jared Allen Idaho State, big names from small schools come out all the time.
This actually may be the biggest reason why I could see Rex drafting Norwood. Rex loves his versatile defenders. At a position of dire need, it makes a lot of sense. I certainly would not mind going 3-4 OLB in this draft. It's painfully obvious that WW was right all along about Gholston and he's just not going to work out on this team. There's no reason for the Jets to wait around for him to blossom in this 3-4 D.
YOU don't think Norwood will be a better pass rusher than Hughes. I do. Norwood takes on bigger, stronger linemen and he's had a more productive career. I wasn't necessarily knocking small school players. Jared Allen and Osi Umenyiora weren't first rounders...mainly because of lack of competition. Also, both are 4-3 ends and that's all they can do. Demarcus Ware is a physical freak that dominated during the Senior Bowl and had an awesome combine. Ware was incredibly under recruited because he was a wide receiver in high school. Jerry Hughes won't run nearly as fast as Demarcus Ware. His stock will rise or fall after the combine and the Senior Bowl.
