He's still going to be an effective hitter away from Fenway (for a few years at least) but he's not hitting 36 homeruns in Citi Field. And Fenway certainly covered up his poor defense (hell, even Manny was a serviceable left fielder in front of the Monster.) Plus, the fact that the Red Sox think he'll be a DH within 4 years says a lot. If the Mets give Jason Bay 5 years they will regret it. If they give him 6, Minaya should be fired on the spot.
Where that article is wrong is that it says the Phillies traded Lee for Halladay. They traded Lee to get some prospects back to make up for the ones they traded for Halladay. The Mets could have built a package of prospects for Halladay and had one of the best 1-2 punches in baseball because they could handle paying 40 million a year between Johan and Halladay whereas Philly was unwilling to do that with Halladay and Lee.
I don't think anyone is challenging Philly's NL dominance this year, but if all that goes down the Mets put themselves as the clear front runner in the wild card chase.
They didn't literally trade one for the other, but that's what they essentially did. The Phillies are going to win the NLEast this year. No doubt. But was the trade for Doc a major upgrade? No, it wasn't. He is better than Lee, but not by a huge margin. And, no, the Mets could not have put together a package to rival the one the Phillies did. We don't have a Drabek or a Taylor in our system.
Agreed that the Phillies are only marginally better. If I was Amaro I would've kept Lee and Halladay and let Lee walk at the end of the year and taken the draft picks. Go for broke in '10, then see where you're at. I admittedly do not know the Mets farm system as well as the Yankees but I think if the Mets were aggressive upfront and offered a package with 3 of the Martinez, Flores, Meija, Thole, Davis grouping Toronto would've bit. Especially because they wound up sending $6 million to Philly. Woulda coulda shoulda I know, but that's the kind of move, not Joel Piniero or Jason Marquis, that would make the Mets World Series contenders for the next couple years.
I might have to disagree. Look I know their one of the best teams in baseball but last year before all the injuries the Mets were 4-2 against the Phils(one was blown by the BP) and in 08 the Mets had a better matchup record then them. A healthy Mets team and with Arroyo and Phillips added and the Mets do have a shot. Also remember injuries could happen to the Phillies too you know.
I agree, I don't think this team has learned their lesson in regards to signing long term deals to players that are no longer in their prime, Jason Bay will be healthy for three years and he will break down and they will carry another older player making a ton of money not contributing.
I WANT Harang. I think I like him more than I like Lackey. Cincy's looking to cut payroll. In any trade they'd be looking for cheap talent that could help them out right now. We'd probably have to add in a bit more talent to get Brandon Phillips as well, but c'mon Omar, pull a trade for Harang, sign O-Dog and Bay, and sign another pitcher... EDIT: We could probably try swinging them John Maine in a trade. He's still young and pretty cheap too.
i do not want O-dog. or should i say OLD DOG. he is 38 and didnt even start at the end of the year.he barly saw the field in the postseason too.
i really didnt know his age it was my venom spewing from my keyboard. sorry in the midst of an anger spike at work which is carrying over to tgg.com castillo lite still suck my balls
I mean I'm a Yankee fan but if I were you I'd want Arroyo over Harang. He's proven to be more durable, he's one of the most underrated second half starters in baseball and I think moving from great american to citi field would only help not hinder. The same could be said for Harang, but there's durability issues there. Either way you can certainly do worse then trade for either one and then wait for next years megacrop of starters. While this off-season so far has been a disaster, it's not impossible for Omar to salvage it. Unfortunately the smart money says he won't.
Games are not won before Christmas. Rosters do not need to be constructed before the new year. All of the "What would the Mets rotation be right now" and other hypotheticals are meaningless. The Mets will not go into the beginning of the 2010 season with their roster constructed the way it is right now. To call the offseason disastrous at this point is silly and aiming to stir up the pot. Unfortunately, I do not have faith in Omar to turn the team around. Here's hoping that he can.
No. It's fact. Any Met fan that can sit there and say this offseason thus far hasn't been a disaster is fooling themselves.
There is no deal that has been made that I wish the Mets would have made instead. Both of the big bats are still on the market. I wouldn't have wanted Lackey for the number of years and dollars he got. It would have been nice to get Halladay, but the Mets couldn't have put together a package for him. Same goes for Edwin Jackson and Granderson.
