We got 1 1st round pick for Coles when the Redskins signed him and then we traded a 1st round pick, Santana Moss, to get him back. The 1st round pick we got for Coles was used to trade up for D-Rob. Letting him go in the first place was a huge loser move, by a huge loser GM.
The Coles situation was a complete debacle. To save money they only put a first round tender on him...idiots.
Abe was a player you loved in the regular season, because something always kept him from playing in playoffs games - himself. A guy named Nick Mangold has made me forget that Abe was ever on this team.
It was a great move, the problem was getting him back where we got screwed. Remember, no one thought any team would sign him w/ the compensation attached in 2003 but it happened and we were prepared w/ Moss and we almost made the AFC Title Game w/o him a year later.
You may be right about that, but Abe just strikes me as being short on heart. And maybe I'm being unduly hard on him with the injuries, but when you have guys hurt like Curtis Martin and Pennington and these guys are fighting through injuries to play it makes you wonder. Not that they should necessarily be playing hurt either.
We only got one first round pick for Coles. We then proceeded to trade that pick, our own first rounder, and a fourth rounder to draft the legendary Dwayne Robertson. Afterwards we traded another first round pick in the form of Santana Moss to get Coles back.
Damn Herm for hurting Abe's knee in '04! for giving him the flu in '01 and all the other various injuries.
Abe and Keyshawn were two of the best players we have had in the last 12 years and I still can't believe all of the sour grapes from Jets fans who criticize them. Key is retired but I wouldn't mind getting Abraham back.
Still a steal, we made a mistake w/ the pick but we saved a ton of cap space and tried to upgrade a need area w/ it. The bigger mistake was trading Moss back for Coles.
Herm allowed Abe to take himself out of one of our most crucial games when we needed him the most, all because he was "concerned about his career" and feared injury. With Rex Ryan, you've got guys running around out there with broken thumbs, for God's sake. Come on, there's no comparison. So yeah, that was typical marshmallow, touchy-feely Herm and a pampered Abe. He'll find a way to disappear on plays this weekend too.
I think a lot of your comparison is on the player, though, not the coach. Jim Leonhard is an undersized guy who has always gone above and beyond just to get on the field while Abraham has all the physical tools and maybe relys too much on that and isn't driven the same way. I don't know how much a coach can do about that.
The guy made a living being explosive, he was hurt and couldn't perform. The same people that get pissed at Abe are the same people that got pissed at Chad for playing w/ a torn rotator cuff. Had he played and been ineffective we'd have complained about that too. A coach can't force a player to play. 2004 was a contract year too and he was hurt.
Abe was a great player when healthy, and I never held the flu against him. That said, as was mentioned earlier, a man named Nick Mangold makes me easily say "Abe who?"
