Dunlap has to be a 3-4 gap eater in the NFL. He will not do well as a 4-3 DE. All teams do is send an RB to chip block him or they try to take out his legs so he can't get to the ball carrier. That's a 3-4 DE. However... I do see the motor problems scouts have mentioned. And I'm a bit ruined now - every time I see a player awkwardly jog up to where the play ended, it reminds me of Gholston. Dunlap won't be another Gholston, I don't know if anyone can be such an embarrassment of a human being, but I see the motor problems. I do understand that when you get your legs taken out 70% of the time during a game you may start taking plays off. He has to grow as a person too. He's still 20, he's still immature. I think he'll be around when the Jets draft, and he would be the top player on the board if Cody isn't around. I like Cameron Heyward better only because he looks more of a "football player" than a physical freak. I love "football players" more I like Dunlap, but i don't love him. I certainly cannot hate him.
Completely agree on the motor part. Noticed it when I've seen him play too. He seems to not give 100% on some plays and takes those plays off, as has been mentioned a bunch already. That being said, he's proven his worth to the Florida D in terms of run defense and I still like him and think he'd be a real good 34 DE; if we were to draft him, I'd be very, very happy and would not complain at all. Also, people have brought up the Mario Williams-Dunlap comparisons. I won't deny that Dunlap has 4.6-4.7 40 yard dash ability running in a straight line, but in terms of game/field speed, he seems a bit less explosive as Mario is and as Mario used to be back in his college days.
^ Thanks. He isn't a playmaker on his own. He allows everyone else to make the plays. The Jets have playmakers at LB and CB, so Dunlap would allow them to do their jobs that much better. I will say this - I now no longer give a flying fuck about combine numbers anymore. Its all about tape. Its nice to have that "gauge" of how fast and strong they are, but in the NFL everyone is fast and strong. Its about are you better at your craft then your opponent is better at his. How good is a prospect at his craft, and how much does he want to perfect his craft.
One last comment on Dunlap. If the Jets draft Dunlap or Cody and the Jet's fan base doesn't see sacks or big TFL stats (which is going to be a fact), they are going to be declaring both a bust. The life of an average uninformed Jet fan. I hoping for Cody in rd 1, but if Dunlap is the pick in late/Mid pick I won't be disappointed. I'm still hoping Heyward declares.
+1 100% agree with you there. I don't give a shit what the fairweather nyjets fan thinks.....guys like Cody/Dunlap have specific tasks to fulfill...if they're getting sacks, that's bonus material.
It would seem, far too many years down the road, far to many Jet fans have no idea what players roles are in a 3-4 defense. Most of them would call Aaron Smith from pittsburgh a bust when he is one of the best in the league at his job. Its a sad fact.
Great video find DFB. Not only is Dunlap not double or triple team blocked on most plays, but very, very few and he is often taken out by one guy. He appeared highly ineffictive in that game. Granted is only one game and not enough to judge a player on completely. He is stout at the point of atack in several instances, but also blown off the ball and lsot on many plays. This does nothing but add fule to the boom or bust fire surronding him.
One thing it did show that Reex will like is that Dunlap has no issue with being lined up all over the place, including in a 2 point lineback like stance on at least one play. It also showed him staying with a play to move down the line and make a tackle at one point. On others it showed him just lost or completely shut down by one blocker. If Rex thinks he has the drive and is coachable i could see it happening. I still like the wide bodied Williams better.
Carlos Dunlap's double teamed more than enough in that video. They try to take out his knees so many times with tight ends, receivers, and backs. Anyways, this is before Florida made the switch to the 3-3-5. Lawrence Marsh, who's a very good defensive tackle, was healthy in the Tennessee game. When Marsh went down, Charlie Strong opted to use many more three man fronts. He may appear "highly ineffective", but he did his job for the most part. Tennessee had one of it's worst games rushing the football against the Gators.
The Vols still ran for over 100 yards on flordia. Just looking over the losses Tennesse put up less rushing yards against UCLA, Mississippi and Bama. Much less againts Cody's bama than anyother team. I would hardly call in one of the "Worst". Now there passing offense was a mess that day with under 100 yards. Gettign solo blocked out of several plays is "doing his job?" .... Dunlap was ok, but not great this day. Thats against a very mediocre tennesse team.
You keep giving Dunlap credit for things he had nothing to do with, he gets taken out of plays by a single lineman more often than not. Alabama didn't run all over Florida because Dunlap wasn't there, that D is loaded with future NFL players, Alabama was played better that game. You keep saying "he does his job" but most of the time he is a none factor, he is the most overrated player in the draft. He is this years Michael Johnson, a rare physical specimen who shows flashes of greatness but most of the time does nothing. If he didn't play for Florida nobody would consider him a 1st rounder.
It was one of the worst games for Tennessee. 3.6 yards per carry... Yes, Alabama and Ole Miss had better games against Tennessee...but the Vols ran the ball close to 50 times against UCLA because Lane Kiffin didn't trust Jon Crompton that early in the season. The only teams in the SEC that can be considered mediocre are Vandy, Kentucky, and Mississippi State. This is a Tennessee team that was a field goal away from upsetting the Alabama team that you speak so highly of. On most of the plays, you probably noticed Tennessee using a combo blocks against him, whether it be a tackle and a guard, a tackle and a tight end, a tackle and an in-motion receiver, or a tackle and a tight end. My point is: The Vols CLEARLY had to gameplan against him. If the Jets were in a situation to draft Mount Cody or Carlos Dunlap, I'd flip a coin. It's a win-win... You guys expect him to make an impact play on every single snap. It's hilarious. Chris Scott was the lineman that was "solo blocking" Carlos Dunlap. Scott was one of the best offensive line recruits in the nation in 2005. I'm giving him credit, because he deserves it. Florida's defense was not the same without Carlos Dunlap and it was blatantly obvious in the SEC title game. That defense is loaded, but guys like Spikes and Cunningham weren't the same without their anchor (Dunlap) on the field. Most of the Gators' other top tier pro prospects are defensive backs. He is a 3-4 defensive lineman, not a sack artist. I highly disagree with that last statement. I LOVE it when guys like you bash players because of where they go to school... After we drafted Mark Sanchez, a lot of idiots bashed him because he played for a top college program and he was surrounded by talent. Fuck that. Mark Sanchez played at USC, because he was the best of the best...just like Carlos Dunlap. Carlos Dunlap CHOSE to play at Florida because he wanted to win a championship. He had offers from every single top program in the nation. With his his build and his athleticism, Dunlap would be a first round talent playing anywhere.
I would not worry about immaturity issues. We have great leaders on our D (Revis, Scott, Harris) The motor issue doesnt bother me because every player in college football takes plays off. Thats up to the front office guys interviewing him to get a sense of how much he loves football. The only way we pass on him at 18 is if Cody is still there.
Disagree. 1 One blocker, held ground, stopped play for no gain. 2 One, forced QB to roll out left to sack. 3 Two, first cut legs, held second made tackle. 4 Two, shed first, second cut legs. 5 One, legs cut, shed, made tackle. 6 (Lined up inside) One, avoided cut, pursued across field, in on tackle. 7 One, play ran away from him, pursued all over field. Great motor on this one. 8 One, slow off snap, but dropped and almost made tackle downfield. 9 Two, doubled by G and T. 10 Two, T and TE, literally tackled by TE to get him out of play to his side. 11 One, broke off and pursued QB. 12 One, pursued misdirection screen and made a tackle after short gain. 13 One, closed hole, teammate made TFL. 14 One, first poor play, overpursuit to the hole. 15 One, pancaked. 16 One, spin move into the hole, teammate made TFL. 17 One, backed off to cover the screen, teammate sack. 18 One, blocked out of play. 19 Two, held ground, strung play out. 20 One, play ran away from him. 21 Two, pressure on QB to force help. 22 One, play ran away from him. 23 Two, shook off G and cut by RB. 24 One, stand up blitz over the center, little impact. While many of the plays as the game went on were him against a single blocker, these plays were run heavily away from him. Only a small portion of these 24 plays were directed towards Dunlap's side of the field, and only the play in which he was tackled did Tennessee have any success. On the plays that they did direct it toward or near him, he showed exactly what I mentioned before, the ability to hold his space and shut down the run. I was more than impressed by what he showed in pursuit of plays all over the field. The tackle he made on the screen was terrific, and having the know-how to drop and cover the screen shows he did his prep work. To be honest, I thought that the defense that the Gators showed in that game wasn't really the best fit for him, which is why it's no surprise that they later changed up to the 3-3-5. I bet tape from a later game will be even more positive for Dunlap.
lol Dunlap is a beast. that video of him VS Ten obviously wasnt his best game but if you notice TEN tried to run away from him most of the game. I played DT/NT before. nothing made me happier knowing all of the runs went outside the tackle. thats the ultimate compliment from an opposing coaching staff. its not like if they call a stretch run opposite side of the field Dunlap is going to sprout wings fly 15 yards across the OL/DL and lay the guy out. he got beat a couple times in the video big fuckin deal UT has some studs up front. I do like Heyward better but he has yet to declare so who knows. I'd rather have Cody than Dunlap also. but heres the common sense thing you guys need to stop bashing Mr.E for. if he were there say at 18. it would be a value pick without a doubt. depending on whos left on the board we all might name 1 or 2 guys wed rather have but before the DUI mess my wish list was 1.Cody and 2.Dunlap. Cody will be a top 12 pick IMO. people need to stop dreaming. quality NT's come at a premium especially with more and more teams toying with the 3-4. In fact Cody should have KC written all over him. as far as Dunlap I wouldnt be angry if he ended up a Jet not in the least. the guys young and he needs a foot in his ass, and if any coach is capable of it I think itd be Rex. that being said theres a couple other players I wouldnt mind around 18. but Dunlap has top 10/15 talent. regardless of one game film.
