This is my response to the: You're Tanny, Jets' OTC With the 18th Pick Select: I'll tell who to select: Carlos Dunlap and you never look back. You do not pass on a 6'6 290 pound defensive lineman that runs the 40 yard dash under 4.7. I saw a post where someone bashed him because of his potential. Are you kidding me? Every single player in the history of the world was drafted because of potential. Besides Eric Berry and Ndamukong Suh, Carlos Dunlap has more potential than anyone in 2010's draft. Carlos Dunlap has a wingspan of more than 7 feet. Someone claimed that he wasn't productive. Did you not watch the SEC title game? Florida's defensive line was in shambles without him. I'll say it right now: Toby Gerhart would have a Heisman trophy to put on his mantle if Carlos Dunlap played in that game. Florida's coaching staff claimed Carlos Dunlap ran a 4.5 in summer workouts. A lot of you guys just look at his stats and say: Well, damn he doesn't get a lot of sacks. That's not his job as a Florida Gator and that wouldn't be his job as a New York Jet. Dunlap was the anchor of the entire defense. Without him, guys like Jermaine Cunningham and Brandon Spikes weren't nearly as productive. Dunlap is double or triple teamed on almost every single play. Florida pulled their starters in 6 out of the 12 games Dunlap started. Some of you were questioning his heart, his desire, and his willingness to play this game at the highest level. Let me tell you a story about this kid. In high school, this game was so easy for him that his coaches let him return a few kicks. He returned two out of three for scores. This is a defensive lineman we're talking about. When something is so easy for you, it's hard to want as much...am I right? I read an interview with Urban Meyer about Carlos Dunlap's work ethic. Supposedly, during his first two years at Florida, Dunlap didn't give full effort on a lot of plays, but still got the job done. Now, Urban Meyer believes that Dunlap truly wants it. You guys can tell yourself this kid doesn't want it all you want - he's doing almost everything in his power to prove you wrong. During summer workouts, Dunlap was always the first and last guy out of the Gators' gym. Over the course of the season, Dunlap set up "study" sessions with all of the defensive linemen. In these meetings, they'd go over pass rushing techniques and opponent weaknesses. If you want to bash him, use the DUI against him. That's his only real knock. It was a stupid, selfish decision. In my opinion, it cost his team a conference title and a shot at another national title. This is a 20 year old kid. He's paying for this mistake. I'll end with a quote from this player...the very same player that a lot of you are looking down on.
So, your saying you would rahter have a boom or bust guy like Dunlap than a guy like DAn WIlliams for our Dline this year? Would you take Dunlap over Cody? Its not that I don't like him, its that I think there are less risky players that fit our needs than him? Why take the risk?
How is he a boom or bust player? I don't get where that is coming from. The SEC title game proved how important he was to that defense. He's proven to the world that he's a dominant player in the 3-4 and the 4-3. Yea, the DUI was an awful decision, but it has nothing to do with what kind of player he is. I would take Carlos Dunlap over anyone except Eric Berry and Ndamukong Suh. (BTW - Dan Williams is one of my favorite prospects, but he's not on the same level as Dunlap)
strong words and high praise from Mr. E. It is very very rare out of our draftniks here that someone is so adamant about a player that will be in the upcoming draft. Even last year with Jabba's starting of the Jarron Gilbert obsession that overtook this board was not a single post made so forcefully in one prospects favor. Tat says to me, the guy will be good as gold. Carlos Dunlap seems like the perfect pick for us in the first round.
Lets' hope the Jet's staff doesn't think that way. When I made this poll this morning, I entered the players I really thought would be available for the Jets and can fill a need. Heyward may not declare and Cody should go higher than 18. It was very clear Dunlap was the best football player of the group. I have compared Dunlap's Size/Speed to Mario Williams. Players that are 6' 6" 290+ aren't suppose to be that quick/fast, he's a freak of nature. It doesn't matter what I think about Dunlap's DUI or plays Scouts have said "he takes off". What matters is what the Jet's front office decides when Carlos is OTC. I still do have some slight reservations (I have reservations about most players in this draft, expect Suh) about Dunlap but they are less with the 18th pick. I wanted no part of Dunlap in the early part of rd 1, but if he's available at 18, I would have no problem. My first choice would be Heyward or Cody...but Dunlap's screw up may help the Jets draft him in Mid/Late rd 1.
First and foremost since Im an LSU fan I love to bash Florida players:lol: But trying to be somewhat objective I think comparisons to Suh's status is somewhat hurtful of Dunlaps stock. Both players were very hyped early in the season and both have had different outcomes so far. Dunlap had 9.5 sacks (out of 69 total for the team) 2 QBH, 8.5 half TOFLs, and he was 8th on the team in tackles he also had 6 pass breakups. he was on a defense with potential first round prospects Brandon Spikes, Joe Haden, and Major Wright. Suh had 12 sacks (out of 42 total for the team) 10 QBH, 23 TOFLs, and he lead the team in tackles. In addittion he broke up 10 passes and had one int.In addition he played on a defense with no other first round, let alone high potential draft picks (not 100% sure on that but no name I can think of is emerging). Suh also won more awards, and placed 4th in the Heisman nomination. Now I will be the first to admit that I dont watch either Florida or Nebraska on a regular basis. But these stats make it fairly clear who the better prospect is. Which is not your argument, understandable. But these stats do address a lot of the criticism of Dunlap. Suh was much more productive than Dunlap despite playing for a lesser team. Suh most likely faced the same, if not more double teams than Dunlap (I'm operating the assumption that Big 12 offensive coordinators are pretty competent people) . Suh did his job and then some despite a weak supporting cast, Dunlap did his job, but all he needed to do in that kind of defense was do his job. Speaking of doing his job, when you are drafted as a 1st rounder, and as high as he is projected to go, teams expect you to do more than just "your job", they expect him to be a great run stopper and pass rusher. Remember if hes going in the top 5 he is probably not going to a team that has a team that has a defense that is not as good as the defense he was just on The simple fact of the matter is this, Suh and Dunlap are both exceptional football players with great production and great potential. However, when you count for several X factors, there is a desire to want more from Dunlap, to prove that he really is all he is hyped to be. That is my reasoning why Dunlap takes so much hate. If you disagree...try not to bash me to much Right now I am 50/50 on Dunlap
That's going to be a given. Al Davis may just draft Dunlap.......his type of player....Speed/Size. If Oakland passes, the Jets have a shot. Seymour is a goner out of Oakland.
My knock on Dunlap is about his maturity and ability to handle the life of an NFL player, more than his on the field play. The Kid is dumb enough to get a DUI during the week of the biggest game of the year? That says a lot. Now, hand him 30 mill and expect him to change? That scares the hell out of me. Add to that NT is, IMO, a more improtant position than DE in the 3-4. Cody or Williams would give you a chance to solidify that for a decade. Dunlap, if he develops into a dominant 3-4 DE, which he has the tools to, it is still not as big of a thing to our defense as a dominant NT is. Urban Myer is going to say good things about Dunlap. Getting a player drafted high helps him sell to the next round of players he's recruiting. If there is one thing we do know about coaches is that they are all full of shit and will say whatever helps them the most at all times. Does Dunlap really want "it". Is It the NFL pay day or to be a truly great player. Look no further than our two very talented defensive backs to see how much a difference in attitude makes. I love Dunlaps skills. He has everything you want in a 3-4 DE and then some. That said, for the reasons I mentioned above, given the choice Between him and Williams I take Williams.
All you are saying is true (I guess)... the point is if that kind of player falls to #18 it's because somehow he raised big ??? to #17 GMs which should have quite an eye in evaluating talent as a whole (not only physical but also mental). If all 17 GMs decide against drafting him my guess is there is something pretty screwed up with this kid (considering the numbers which we all can see, and they are great). Now I'm not saying that means he'll suck at NFL level but that does make him a big bust/big reward kind of player and, if players like NT Williams are still available, I'm not sure I want to take the risk. I know this is the Gholston (or the Raiders) syndrome but honestly... how many players with awesome numbers like Dunlap became JAGs because they didn't have the mentalitiy of a REAL football player (be it because they don't want it bad enough on the field or they aren't professional enough off the field)? I'm not sure I want to take that risk with my #1 rd pick... In the other rds it's another story but I always want to go with the "safe" guy in rd 1 because of the money invested in him and the fact that talent is almost always available. PS at the end of the day though I'm Mike Mayock's bitch so I'll take his word on this subject
Exactly. Which is why you'll forgive me if I'm not going to crown this kid an all-pro when he's more of a workout warrior than stand-out on the field. Gholston was 6'5, 260 of solid muscle, ran a 4.55, 37 reps, and was near the top in all the other workouts. Yet he's been a colossal bust. And I'll also be hesitant to suggest that Dunlap'll run a 4.5 at the combine. Didn't OSU clock Terelle Pryor at 4.3? I would be shocked if he runs faster than a 4.8, not that it's shabby, but certainly not otherworldly.
Vernon Gholston had to make a position switch. Carlos Dunlap won't have to do that. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Terrelle Pryor ran a 4.3.
No one is comparing Suh and Dunlap. If Dunlap goes to a team that plays the 3-4, he will be expected to do his job. As a 3-4 end, it won't be his job to get after the quarterback. Dunlap is the best run stopping end that I've seen in a long, long time.
Who the hell gives a crap about other GMs? 13 GMs passed on Darrelle Revis and he's the best corner in the game.
You're right, he is a KID. He's got maturity issues, but who's to say he can't learn from his mistake?
I'd be shocked. You think he's faster than Pat White, Mike Vick, Brad Smith, and just about every wide receiver to ever come out of the NCAA?
For the record i never wanted Gholston he scared me from jump,i remember wanting DRC in that draft but alot of people thought he was just a product of hype from his cousin Antonio and it was too high for him to be picked #6 and he was a workout warrior, which if anything it was Gholston that was. Looking back DRC would be perfect for us opposite Revis and its a shame cause we still need a corner and olb now. Dunlap doesnt scare me as much as gholston but honestly he does a little bit. Not one thing in particular just more of a collection of things, but i still would want Dunlap over anyone in the draft besides Suh, Berry and Haden.
