Who do the Jets select with the 18th pick??? IMO, all 7 could be in the mix when the Jet's are OTC. The above players are available and on your draftboard. First Poll I've ever started.....tried to get specifc as possible. Too many Polls are "Pie in the sky". Please don't tell us why you wouldn't pick any of these players or trade. The Jets have to select 18th..no trades. Tell us your reasoning for your selection. Should give us all some insight what everyone's thinking.
Dunlap was my choice....i didn't even read the rest of the list, WW85 :smile: if he's there @ 18....Tanny would be a numbskull not to select him. EDIT: sorry, didn't realize you were looking for an explanation. The Jets require a 3-4 DE with a high motor considering our current DL is aging and the depth isn't there. From a talent standpoint..Dunlap is the right choice.....from a character standpoint...that remains to be seen. I believe the talent outweighs the character issues (if there are any to begin with) in this case.
I'm not saying Dunalp is the right or wrong choice. Why did you guys select Dunlap??? Are you concerned about his off the field issues or at times lack of focus? Just trying to get posters discussing their reason for their selection and keeping the draftboard here at TGG active.
Williams is a reach, Thomas a bit undersized, Dunlap DUI takes him out of the equation for me, Cox also has off-field issues and there's just something about him that makes me wary. I don't think we need a WR. I'd take either of the other two.
Don't underestimate Williams, he's the 2nd best NT in this draft and isn't getting the recognition he deserves. Cox was arrested for a suspended driver's license, he's not a bad kid. Not only being a very good CB, he's an awesome kickoff returner.
It's a toss up between Iupati and Williams IMO. At the end of the day I'd have to say Williams. Taking a very good NT like him allows us to: 1) Be set at NT for years to come with him starting and Pouha as a backup. 2) Give Jenkins some rest when he needs it (so he'll hopefully play 2 more years at a good level) 3) Be creative with our front 3 (or 4)... How do you run on Jenkins - Williams - Pouha (he's a good run stuffing end)? The DL is VERY important in Rex scheme. Iupati would be an excellent pick but at 18 he's too much of a reach, he won't help straight away (Faneca will start next year) and I want to see what we have in Slauson and Turner (if Callahan is as good as everyone says he'll have developed them right). No to drafting a WR, we are a run first team.. can't have too much money invested in WRs No to drafting a CB so high... let Lowery, Strickland and either some guy we draft in the middle of the draft or a FA play opposite to Revis. No to drafting a S so high. I love our 3 S rotation with Leonhard as the boss of the DBs, Smith as the hard hitting S and a guy we draft in rd 2/3 as the ball-hawk safety. No to drafting an OLB. We aren't doing that bad at the position... sure, an upgrade from B. Thomas would be nice but I don't see it happening in this draft (i do in 2011). Of course if the BPA falls to us in rd 2-5 why not... And finally... I'd be open to drafting a DE in rd 1 but not Dunlap. Options are: A) He isn't a jackass... if teams discover that in the pre-draft interviews someone will draft him before 18. B) He is a jackass... he'll fall to 18 but I don't want another low-motor moron on our team. That said I think both Williams and Iupati will be available in the early 20s (even though NT is a premium position and some teams will reach). But no trades possible . My ideal draft (but I'd be cool with changes as long as we go BPA). 1. NT/DE (Williams or Hayward if he's still available) 2. DE/NT (depending on what we do in rd 1, I like Arthur Jones but we'll have to see how well he recovered from injury) 3. S 4. RT 6. BPA between WR, CB, TE, OLB 7. Same as above Of course assuming we have those picks, I don't want to get into a debate on what picks we have.
Strictly from a value perspective....if Dunlap is there at 18...I don't know how you pass on him. He would be an animal on our DL. Screw the DUI...he's a kid. It's not like he's a chronic law breaker.
You do like the other 17 teams in front of you did he would POTENTIALLY be an animal on our DL... but the problem is not every player lives up to it's potential...
Mambo....Good comments!!...hard to argue with a fellow Italian!! Dunlap has the most talent of the group. Don't underestimate Iupati.......he's my highest ranked guard since Ben Grubbs and may even become a better pro.
Dan Williams hands down for me. He may be a better prospect than Cody giving the weight and motivation issues Cody has off felid. Williams would be a great addition to our D-line.
Dunlap is an Al davis type player. Physical freak who is not the sum of his parts. He could be dominant, or could be completely invisable. His draft will be the same way. If he does not go early peopel are going to wonder how the he he fell so far? Boom or bust one way or the other there are prospects as good with less down side around 18 for us.
I guess that rings true for Aaron Rodgers too. just because other GM pass on players...doesn't mean you have to follow suit. Dunlap fills a NEED...and quite possibly could be a "gift" at the 18 spot.
I'll buy that. There are certainly other prospects to look at...especially with how deep this draft is.
Haha thanks I'm not underestimating Iupati... but Grubbs himself got drafted 29th in rd 1... plus this draft is full of talent and I just can't see us getting a G at 18. On a side-note.. have you read about Cameron Heyward saying he wants to go back to the buckeyes for his senior season? Any hope he'll change his mind? If not who is your highest ranked 3-4 DE (Suh doesn't count)?
It was a sort of joke ... anyways I think Dunlap could go anywhere from top 10 to rd 2 depending on his caracter evaluation prior to the draft. I root for the kid because if he lives up to his potential he'll be a very fun player to watch, but I'm scared about having a Gholston 2.0 on our team... I guess we'll have to wait and see. PS I lvoe Rodgers but he did have quite some time to develop while sitting on the bench and watching Favre play...
..and thats the exact rub with Dunlap. Will he be a dominant player at the next level. Does he have the Revis "I want to be great" mentality or the Rhodes "its great to be me" mentality?
You're right, spending the 18th pick on a guard is usually a reach....I just have high hopes for Iupati. Trading back would be the ideal scenario, but wasn't an option in this poll. Faneca's play has deteriorated this last year. The Steelers know when to get rid of their players. Heyward mentioned to the local media he's probably going to stay....I still think it's up in the air.
why would you be scared about having Gholston 2.0 on the team...you could say that about any player in the draft....nobody knows how these kids will turn out. Everyone is a crapshoot. We happened to pick a lemon 2 years ago in Gholston....shit like this happens....you just hope it doesn't happen too often.
Well yeah but some players are more dangerous than others... and right now in rd 1 Taylor Mays and Carlos Dunlap are the boom or bust players... I have lots of trust in our scouting guys though so hopefully they'll be able to sort it out... PS since I'm at it... no legit RT prospect could fall to us at #18? I have no ideas about RT prospects in this draft... but last year Oher at 20 was a steal!
