it depends how crazy Al Davis is feeling, obviously Mays and Dunlap are guys who would have awesome 40 times (also I hear Jake Locker runs a good 40 if the Raiders decided to go qb unlikley as it is). But if Davis is really only looking at 40 times...Then Trindon Holiday is a first round pick. Doubtful but then again so was Mitchell in the second last year
Updated my top 50!! Locker is gone. I also deleted Dwyer out of the top 50. I had high hopes for Dwyer, but didn't have a great year. Added..Derrick Morgan and Perrish Cox. Tim Tebow...falls further, Earl Thomas & Dan Williams move up.
Jon Dwyer rushed for 1,346 yards and 14 TDs with a bowl game remaining. That's a great year in my opinion...especially as an option fullback. My biggest concern about Dwyer are his receiving skills - in three seasons at Tech, he's only caught 13 passes. Perrish Cox and Derrick Morgan definitely deserve to be in your top 50. Good shit adding those two. Tim Tebow will more than likely go to the Jaguars in the first round. Rankings have nothing to do with it - selling tickets is Jacksoville's biggest problem. Earl Thomas is a big time safety prospect. I could definitely see him moving ahead of DeAndre McDaniel and Taylor Mays before draft time. Dan Williams is the second best nose tackle in this draft. Mount Cody is obviously the top NT, but Williams also gets the job done.
The last game I saw Dwyer play against Georgia (around Thanksgiving) he was awful. His stats were good, you're right. My concerns on Dwyer is his weight and quickness in the NFL. I never paid attention to Dwyer's receiving ability..never noticed him catching the ball.
You can't completely write him off because of one bad game. UGA linemen Kade Weston, Geno Atkins, and Jeff Owens were dominant against GT. All three are very good pro prospects. Dwyer plays in an offensive system that if it doesn't get moving early on, it won't. That's the biggest reason why teams don't use the triple option anymore - if you know how to defend it, it's useless. Weight? The guy's never dealt with any weight issues as far as I know. He's between 225 and 235. He's a bigger back...similar to our very own Shonn Greene. He's certainly no Lendale White. Power is a huge part of his game Quickness? Maybe you just didn't watch much of this kid, but when he gets into the open field, he's usually gone. He has an awkward running style sometimes, but he does a lot of damage on the ground if that option attack gets going. Dwyer has incredibly burst. ...so is speed The obvious knocks on this kid are that he plays in a gimmicky offense, he rarely catches passes, and he doesn't have ANY skills in pass protection. Weight and quickness definitely aren't issues. Jon Dwyer supposedly runs in the 4.4s. If he does that at the combine, he'll be a late first to early second round draft choice. This is not a deep year for running backs.
1) Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska 3) Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma 13) Everson Griffen, DL, USC 15) Cameron Heyward, DE, Ohio St 16) Terrence Cody, NT, Alabama 20) Mike Iupati, OG, Idaho 27) Carlos Dunlap, DE, Florida 28) Eric Norwood, DE/OLB, South Carolina 29) Dan Williams, NT, Tennessee 32) Greg Hardy, DE/OLB, Ole' Miss 35) Marvin Austin, DT, North Carolina 38) Jerry Hughes, DE/OLB, TCU 41) Anthony Davis OT/OG, Rutgers 44) Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech 46) Brandon Graham, DE/OLB, Michigan 48) Aaron Bailey, DE, Miami 49) Jermaine Cunningham, DE/OLB, Florida 50) Mike Neal, DE, Purdue I'm gonna try to get used to these names. At least one of them should be in green in 4 1/2 months.
No Odrick? I'm telling you, the dude will be a great 3-4 DE, and if he's there in the second, the Jets HAVE to take him. All-American for Penn State, has played 43DE, 34DE, but mainly 43DT, great penetration, good quickness...the dude will be a stud in the NFL. The other Penn State, Navorro Bowman, is a probable first round pick, too, not applicable to the Jets, but I'm surprised not to see him here.
Navorro Bowman is very talented player, but he's an idiot. I think it'll be a mistake for Bowman to come out early...if he hadn't messed up and been arrested, he'd be a top three overall linebacker prospect. LB prospects like Travis Lewis, Sean Weatherspoon, Eric Norwood, Sergio Kindle, Von Miller, Brandon Spikes, and Rolando McClain will all be ranked ahead of him. Right now, Bowman should be ranked behind Travis Lewis and Sean Weatherspoon at 4-3 OLB. The kid's a beast, but he's proven that he's very immature and that's a huge red flag in today's NFL.
It probably seems like I'm saying this to defend a penn stater, but the big story has been how bowman has really grown up. He's been tested every month for weed by psu and by the court, and he's been clean since the summer. He's had one violation in the past two years, and that was a violation of his probation when he smoked weed after the nearly simultaneous death of his dad and the hs coach who was a father figure. At the hearing last summer, even the peosecution argued for a lenient sentence. He's grown up since the birth of his son, and supporting his family and the fact that hell be a first round pick...his measurables are going to be ridiculous, make it an almost certainty that he's gone.
First, it's extremely difficult to do a Top 50 ( I put alot of effort into it), especially this early in the process. I based most of my projections on their ability to be successful in the NFL. Production in College, injuries, off-field issues, versatility, fitting into an NFL system...all are taken into account. Carlos Dunlap should be a Top 5 player, issues beaten to death, pushed him down. After the Combine this list will be very different. You can't make everyone happy with your rankings.....impossible. I see lots of Big Ten Football and Odrick just isn't consistent enough to make my Top 50. Odrick seems a perfect fit for a 3-4 end. Odrick doesn't get to the QB enough (6 sacks) and seems to wear down as the game progresses, he needs to bulk up some. Good player, not great and NFL Offensive Tackles are a different breed than College. Odrick also was arrested last spring which brings up a small redflag....I don't think it will happen again. Bowman is a different story. There are some good/not great 3-4 De's that missed my top 50...Jones, Wootton, Ogbo, Odrick, Alualu....inconsistent play, injuries or the ability to adjust to the 3-4 end position are the main reasons these guys aren't on my list. All of them should be Mid 2nd to 3rd picks. I like Wootton's potential the best of the group. Mike Neal, under the radar, broke in to my Top 50 barely, cause I see a bigger upside. Bowman is Penn State's best defensive player, worth a first rd grade. Could be one of the best athletes in this draft. Multiple arrests, for the same issues....a social loser. Not in my Top 50...sorry.
I'll readily admit that I don't watch nearly enough college football to be considered an authority, but I do live and breathe Georgia Tech football, and I probably couldn't have put forward a better case for Dwyer than you just did, and from what I've read of your posts, you could probably do the same for any number of players at any position in countless programs...many hats off to you. The only thing I could add to this would be to comment on the highlighted part. The triple option might be gimmicky, but for the type of runs he's asked to make in the offense, I believe he would produce like this in a pro-style offense as well. Although he has ripped of a few big runs via the late pitch on the edge, a majority of his big plays have come as the dive option up the middle, and making great cuts when they are there, or the outside veer, both of which you see in most offenses. And as you showed in that one video, he'll lay the wood when necessary, and even when it's not. The pass catching/pass protection faults go without saying, although I would be hesitant to say its a knock on him only because Paul Johnson's offense is obviously light on passing, so he doesn't have opportunity to showcase what he can do. Pass protection is an absolutely necessary skill for an everydown back in the NFL, and I think Dwyer would be more than up for the challenge of improving in this area. His best attribute though is probably what between his ears. If you've ever heard an interview with him you'll see right away that this kid "gets it", and you'll never hear anyone say they have to dumb something down for him to understand. When he talks it reminds me of MJD, and I think a lot of people would be comfortable saying that that guy is a pretty intelligent dude.
I updated my Top 50.........Post #1 I added player movement...^/=/v...IMO, the player is or will move up or down the board. Comments appreciated!!
If he comes out........2/3 my best guess. The guy has alot of potential and the physical abilities the NFL loves, still raw. I project a big upside for Mallet, it may take some time for him to develop.
Updated my top 50.......... 2 new additions: Jason Pierre-Paul DE South Florida Greg Romeus, DE, Pitt. Some players moving up and down.
Dez Bryant is the best player in a weak receiving class. He'll obviously have to have a solid combine to avoid Mike Williams comparisons.
