So, most of us figured our season was done went Kris Jenkins went out with the torn ACL against Buffalo. But lets give some mad props to Pouha, and Mike DeVito, Marques Douglas, and Sean Ellis, who have picked up the slack. The most important position in the 3-4 defense is the nosetackle, and even when Pouha has been single-teamed, those guys have been doing a great job swallowing up blockers and letting our linebackers make plays. Since Jenkins has been injured, the Jets run D has been just as good as when he was in the lineup. The first game he missed, they allowed 119 yards to the Raiders, but then held the Dolphins to 52, New England to 3.2 YPC, Carolina to 75 yards and 3.0 YPC, and Tampa, today, had 43 yards and 2 YPC. Big ups to the spare parts defensive line. Sure, they're not penetrating and dominating people like Jenkins was, but they're doing their job, and this is the #1 defense in the NFL because of guys like Pouha. Not too shabby.
The DL depth has definitly stepped up their game and held the fort. But man, I miss having Jenkins in there.
Starting with the second half of the New England game, this has been a lights out defense. Doesn't hurt that the last three opponents have been Carolina, Buffalo and Tampa
i told my wife that next year with jenks and leon coming back it will be like getting tampa's and detroit's 1st round picks in addition to whatever we can grab with pick #32
As a Pouha naysayer I've been pleasantly surprised with his play. I still think a 3-4 DT is necessary in the draft next year, but it's not as big of a need as I originally thought. Truthfully I wouldn't be upset if the FO decided that the 10 draft is so deep that they can trade down and recoup some picks in the middle of the draft.
I'd like one of those nice DE's in the 1st, most preferably either Cameron Heyward or Carlos Dunlap. We could probably still pick up Dan Williams or Boo Robinson in the 2nd.
Not to take credit away from the players but I think that Ryan schemes (plus Ryan being an ex DL coach) really helps. Let's not get too hyped up since we played crappy teams recently but I think the first sign of good coaching is when so-so players stand out and so far DeVito and Pouha are very pleasant surprises
That is the exact scenario I would love for the Jets in April. Let's not forget guys are D-line is old. Pouha/Ellis/Douglas/Jenkins are all over 30
Take Pouha out... he is JUST 30 and never played many snaps... he came out of college very late and was always a b-up. I agree we have to draft a DE and a NT for the future though... Problem is: DeVito is stepping up at DE, the CS loves Pitotiua as a DE prospect, Douglas is Ryan's buddy and Ellis still got game in him. At NT Jenkins is THE starter and Pouha is a good backup... Considering Green is let go next season (although I think he is a solid backup but I guess he is the most cuttable DL) we already have 6 DL on the roster, would you prefer to draft a NT or a DE (considering Pouha can also play there)? Or do you keep 8 DL? It will be interesting to see what Tanny does on draft day.
Pouha had one of those oversea's missions. Pouha is doing well but isn't the long term solution. Good situational/role player. Pouha is still 30, not alot of tread used on his tires, but the body is on the downside for any NFL player in their 30's. Jenkins is just 30...turned 30 in August and may never be the same. Heck, Jenkin's body has been wearing down the past few years.....at best he has a couple of years of limited play...2 down player.
This is why I hope we draft that NT kid from Tennesse I think Pouha can be a valuable back-up for the next 3 years which in NFL years is forever. He is a versatile DL (Although not the most talented) and can play both NT and DE, plus as we said he hasn't been used much. As for Jenkins I love him and I hope he keeps playing as long as possible... but my guess is IF his body keeps up he'll be a situational palyer for the next 2 years at most. All in all that would be a good scenario also considering how much Rex likes to mix stuff up on the DL.
I agree....we need to get one of these 3 players.. Cody/Williams/Robinson. Listening to one of Rex's PCs recently.....he hinted how important the NT position is in the Jet's defense, in relation to Jenkins being out. Most Jet fans need to realize Kris will probably never be the same and we need to plan accordingly.
i'd say at worst he'll be a 360 pound nt who holds the point.i don't expect him to penetrate the way he had been.however he will still be a force in the run game.
