A nice little blurb on the state of our D.... and if you watched the ravens last night, you'll notice they are a mere shell of what they used to be, without Rex......thoughts?

As hard as it is to believe, these Jets have something in common with the Super Bowl III championship team.

The Jets stood atop the NFL's rankings in total defense Monday. According to Elias Sports Bureau, the Jets haven't led the entire league in total defense this late in the season since 1968, when the Jets were on their way to winning the Super Bowl. That year, the Jets surrendered a league-low 240.2 yards per game.

The Jets were first in the league before the second-rated Packers played Monday night. The Jets are allowing 276.4 yards per game.

'It doesn't surprise me that a Ryan helped coach that defense," joked Rex Ryan, whose father Buddy was the defensive line coach under Weeb Ewbank in 1968. "That's something my dad was very proud of. You guys always ask, 'Have you been humbled?' This is humbling to me."

The Jets also rank first in rushing with 168.6 yards per game on the ground this season.

well, the ravens were without Reed and Mattison is not using the same schemes Rex did which a) the defense doesn't like. they loved the attack schemes, and b) their pass rush has died without Suggs. He's been hurt for a while.

If someone told you before the season that by week 13 the Jets would have the #1 ranked defense including #1 pass defense, and on offense the #1 ranked rushing YPG you'd quite rightly think we were something like 9-3 and looking forward to Jan/Feb '10

While I'm not a naysayer, it's upsetting that we are 6-6 and might not make the playoffs.

I agree with your assessment of why the ravens have fallen, good points, but I guess my take on the article was more along the lines of; how fortunate WE are to have the guy and what he brings to the table as a defensive mind, and what an honor/testament to be compared to the '68 Jets that his Dad was a part of, not the reasons/excuses Ravens aren't what they used to be.....

He's a rookie what did you really expect? If you ask me he's doing a great job(minus the picks..I wish we could spread the ball around like Drew Brees does) we should see a marked emprovement next year. Where are Ryan and Flacco sitting?..6 and 6 just like we are I thought those where lasts years wonder twins..got tired of hearing about them..don't hear nothing now cause they're rookies learning the position!:jets:

Favre is a Hall of Famer. Sanchez is a rookie. Sorry people don't have the same expectations for each at this point. Please forgive us oh great one.

When we hired Rex and the curmudgeons - mostly other teams' fans - said that coming from Baltimore's D meant nothing ("because look at the Ravens D after Marvin Lewis, Mike Nolan, ..."), the overlooked common denominator of the Ravens' decade of dominant D, was Rex; he had been there the whole time, and now that he's left, their D is not what it has been.

Granted, they have had some injuries, and they lost Scott and Leonhard to us, but still; the Jets D is the top ranked D and the Ravens D ain't.

I remember that being said UB. But that D has struggled all year, even when Suggs and Reed were healthy. It is just not the same D that used to dominate.

We should be. Marky Mark gave two away on his own. And ST gave another away...

i know. I was just giving my thoughts on the fall of the Ravens. When Ray Lewis retires, its going to be more mediocre.

I actually wrote 2 more paragraphs at work, but their computer signs me out randomly and as I was in the middle of writing the addition to the post.

I went on about how the Jets are in a great position to have a dominating defense, running game, and franchise QB for a long time as long as Rex is still here and Schotty isn't.

Once the growing pains are over, the team will be able to contend year in and year out.

The Jets were without Pace for four games, make that five since his first game back he sucked. They have been without their best or second best player Jenkins for how many games now. Imagine how much better the rushing defense would be with Jenkins.

Rex got it. He has done it with bad players on the team like Gholston, Rhodes, Lowery, and other DB subs when Strickland and Shepard were out. It's clear his schemes are the difference.

And the #1 ranked defense gave away two, and was crappy in a third game (when everyone stunk). This entire season, both good and bad, has been a complete team effort.

rhodes and Lowery do not suck. I actually believe Lowery is going to develop into a nice number 2 CB. We are all a bit spoiled w the defense that Revis plays and expect that from all our guys.

just goes to show that these "general" categories can be very misleading as far as a teams W-L record.........

the best stats for measuring a defense are not necessarily total yards allowed and points allowed. you have to dig a little further to weed out the good vs great D's....

    1. 3rd down sacks
    2. avg yards allowed on first down
    3. turnovers
    4. defensive penalties.

i would love to see where the jets rank in these categories.

I thought our defense was sure to crumble without Jenkins, but the D has really stepped up its play with him out.

It is also great to hear that were doing, so good with what we got now, because I feel like we have so many areas on the defense that can be upgraded.
