Watch out for the Raiders and the Niners when Griffen is available. If Everson destroys the combine, like he more than likely will, he'll be a top ten pick.
OLB is the biggest need on the team IMO, CB could become a big need depending how the offseason plays out, safety is an obvious need. NT I don't think is a first round need but definetly need to start thinking about getting someone to take Jenkins spot, same with DE, also OL and WR. I think we are in a good position to take BPA this year, unless something drastic happens between now and the draft.
Mike DeVito and Ropati Pitoitua are the only players on our defensive line under 30. We have to get defensive linemen that can contribute right away in 2010's draft. The defensive line is the biggest hole on the team right now because there's absolutely no depth at all. It's fairly obvious that this team will not re-sign Lito Sheppard in the off-season, but we could still bring him back. Joe Haden is the best corner prospect in this year's draft by far. He's only REALISTIC option other than a defensive lineman. We can only hope the front office gets rid of Vernon Gholston. If so, we'll be able to get an OLB later in this draft - it's loaded with 3-4 talent.
Well if Haden is on the board, it is a no brainer. Either way I think we target a CB early if not in FA. Two great CBs in this system makes it deadly and Rex knows that. I really don't think DL is as big of an immediate need as everyone else. Ellis is showing no signs of slowing down, Douglass is doing his job just fine, Devito has been great, RoPo shows some potential and Pouha has done a great job filling in for Jenkins and was playing pretty well at De before he went down too. Obviously we need to start thinking about the future and if the BPA is a De then by all means you take him but I would rather see the Jets sign a guy like Johnny Jolly and fill other needs in the draft. I think a guy that can get consistent pressure off the edge without blitzing is a more immediate need and chances are we are going to need to replace Rhodes as well. We also need to consider an OG to replace Faneca or RT to replace Woody.
The guys I'd be happy taking in the middle of the first are Haden, Heyward, Cody, Hughes, Mays, and Bailey.
Talking about DL: - Is there a chance Gerald McCoy could fall to us? - Arthur Jones looked like a first round pick at the beginning of the season, but his stock seems to be falling. What's the deal with him? Could he be a target in rounds 2-4?
One thing i just thought about it may be absurd but if we draft cody and Jenkins makes a healthy return we could use Jenkins at NT first down and Cody at DE first and then swap back and forth at the 2 positions 2,3 down
Yes he will def be there in the 2nd round. His stock has fallen because he had to get season ending surgery on his knee. He only played 9 games this year
I still don't know why you like Taylor Mays so much. Jerry Hughes will never be considered the BPA for us in the first round.
I <3 Allen Bailey, he's kind of raw though, don't think he'll come out this year. Our biggest need is a 5-tech
Allen Bailey will probably submit a request to the NFL Draft Advisory Board. He'll leave early if he's projected to make bank. I think he'll stay too, but he's such a physically gifted player that he might be persuaded to come out early. We're extremely lucky that 2010's draft will be loaded with 3-4 linemen.
I'm really glad we traded for Edwards, it really frees up our options not having to worry about drafting a receiver. I want a versatile DL player that can contribute now, this it he draft to get someone like that.
I missed the first comment on Bailey somehow, but yeah, Bailey can be something special. The problem with Bailey is that he should have had a much bigger impact while he was at Miami, but a number of different reasons things have hurt his development. First, the simple fact that the Hurricanes have been pretty terrible at developing players over the past few years, then the additional issues related to Bailey's multiple position switches. He's one of the rare players best suited as an end in both the 43 and the 34, with the potential to even play some rush LB. I'm not sure that he'll really even entertain the thought of leaving early because of this amazing DE class, but he has the potential to move up.
It isn't a certainty Edwards will be Jet in 2010. It was a steep price to pay for Edwards if we don't keep him. I might be wrong, but it doesn't look like Edwards is going to meet the undisclosed incentives for the Jets to owe the Browns more compensation. Edward's numbers have been pedestrian, to say the least Edwards doesn't deserve the payday he'll be looking for from the Jets. Let's see if Edwards gets greedy and walks from a lower offer from Tanny. Edwards has pubicly said.." I want to remain a NY Jet". IMO, Edwards won't have much leverage and should take a lower deal.
the fact that we are entering this draft WITHOUT a question at the QB position is huge in itself. BPA jil
being that we have the #1 defense overall and against the run with jenkins out,i voted ol.need to get woody or faneca's replacement immediately
I believe KC is done with the Jets. Rex doesn't seem to have any faith in Clemen's game. The Jets should probably look at bringing in a Vet backup for Sanchez. I like Ainge & Kevin O'Connell, but doubt we would go with such inexperience at QB.
you know - alot of the very successful 3-4/4-6 style defenses preferred to have experienced defensive lineman in there. its hard for a younger d lineman to really stand out in an nfl style 3-4. its the LB that really need to be young and fast. so age on the d line doesn't bother me much. if anything the jets need to get younger and faster at OLB thru the draft and plug the DL with experience thru FA. VG was supposed to be that younger fast link at LB but thats gone bust so its back to the drawing board. jil
Experienced DL are important in a 34 because the young players need to adjust to the schemes, but look at the dominant 34 linemen in the league. Seymour, Warren, and Wilfork were all high draft picks that played early in their careers. Igor Olshansky is now a vet in Dallas, but started with Luis Castillo right off the bat for the Chargers. Haloti Ngata is probably the best 34 end in the league, and was a high draft pick/immediate contributor. You're right in the sense that it's harder for young DLs to make an impact in terms of big plays, because it takes a truly great 34 DL to do that. However, they are often just as good, if not better from day one than a lot of the veteran options you'll find on the market. To note, nose tackle is different, because one usually needs to develop that body/strength.
