Interesting topic. I think NT is the most important position in a 3-4 and if we can get a dominant one to switch in and out with Jenk that would be HUGE.
I agree that a NT is a need but idk what we need more a NT or a Solid DE opposite of Ellis that can stop the run and generate a pass rush. I would be nice to get a really good pass rushing OLB but i think we have too much money invested in OLBs right now and idk if the front office wants to risk getting another player like gholston.
Bingo! Even knowign that, you don't know who you could possibly take. At our current draft spot Its easy to assume all the top end DT/DE's that would fit are going to be gone. If we lose two or three more games that changes a bit and I would love to grab Cody if we could. OL should be a priority. Eric Berry is my favorite prospect in the draft. A corner opposite Revis if we do not retain Lito. Ditto WR is we do not retain Edwards. Lots of different ways to head and way too many varibles out there. At this point its safe to assume we are not going QB and I doubt RB. Hopefully not Kicker. We should be set at ILB. Anything else is up in the air.
I would go crazy if we could land Gilyard in the 2nd round, Edwards,Cotchery,Gilyard,Keller would be phenomenal
I'll give you specific players. NT...Cody if on the Board in Rd 1. DE..Cameron Heyward or Carlos Dunlap (later rd 1 pick, trade back) If Joe Haden is on the board, when the Jets are OTC (unlikely), all bets are off and Haden is a Jet. I doubt we would go O-Line, WR, OLB or S (Berry won't be available) in Rd 1.
I agree with WW85...tough to guage since we don't who's going to declare. But having said that....based on NEED....I went with NT. The 3-4 defense starts with the NT position.....Space-eater NTs don't come around too often......and since big Jenks' status is still a question mark.....NT has to be at the top of the list. We're certainly in need of other position depth (OL, DE, S, WR)......but our biggest is NT, imo.
I voted defensive end. Shaun Ellis can't play forever and Marques Douglas is an aging rotational player. Ohio State's Cameron Heyward should be the guy if he's there. I'd love to see any 3-4 lineman selected. If Mount Cody is available, we have to go NT. Carlos Dunlap hurt his stock with that DUI, but he's 6'6 290 with speed under 4.7. A player of his measurables hasn't come out since Mario Williams. He can play in both the 4-3 and the 3-4. USC's Everson Griffen is the most physically gifted player I've ever seen. Supposedly, this guy's run been clocked under 4.4 in the 40...he's 6'3 260. He'll be a 3-4 OLB though. Still, a team may want him as a 4-3 rush end. Ohio State's Cameron Heyward is the closest thing to a sure thing at 3-4 end. He's got NFL bloodlines, his dad is the late, great running back Ironhead Heyward. He reminds me a lot of Richard Seymour. Carlos Dunlap, Everson Griffen, and Cameron Heyward will be in battle throughout the off-season. These are the top three defensive ends - it'll be interesting to see which one gets drafted first. Like WW said, it really depends who's available when we're on the clock.
Is it just me or does it seem like Pouha is holding down the fort pretty good since Jenkins injury? I know NT may still be a need but i really dont think its as big as one as everyone thinks.
Keep an eye on these guys as well: UNC's Marvin Austin and The U's Allen Bailey. Both are ridiculously athletic defensive tackles that can play 3-4 end.
Believe it or not, Sione Pouha is older than Kris Jenkins. We have to get younger (and more athletic) on the defensive line.
The D-Line is performing well, but the thing that frightens people is their age. I think Pouha is older than Jenkins and the rest are 30+
actually MJD raped Pouha religiously in the 1st quarter of the NYJ/Jax game......I'll admit, he's been a decent filler for Jenks.....but no fucking way would he suffice as a starter.
It's too bad Griffen isn't a need for the Jets, he's a special player. I think some 4-3 team...Minnesota, Giants...could draft Griffen. Heyward is still not in the mind of the average fan as a Rd 1 talent, but believe me, the NFL Scouts & Draft experts are well aware of Heyward's ability.
