I have been hearing that this guy can go anywhere from 2nd to 4th round. He has great size and hits the whole hard. I truly believe this guy will be a starting running back in the nfl. I know we have plenty of other needs, but would love to see this guy in green next year.
Like you said, too many other needs. With the limited amount of picks that we have, I would say that it is very unlikely, and unnecessary.
RB isn't a need this year. TJ should be coming back. He's given the Jets a reason to keep him. Shonn Greene's carries will increase next year - and I think he'll be a better runner than TJ next year. Not to mention Leon returning.
he is an absolute monster but i would rather the jets target someone for the d-line or secondary for their picks.
I would be very surprised if he fell past a low 2nd round, he goes late first or early 2nd. His speed, power, exactly what the NFL likes, however I still would like to see if he is a good pass catching back, if he is KC picks him up.
In a weak running back class, Gerhart should go early-to-mid second. Clemson's CJ Spiller, Fresno's Ryan Mathews, and Georgia Tech's Jonathan Dwyer are all better pro prospects than Toby Gerhart. I like Gerhart a lot, but he'll have to run a very, very good 40 to become a top three running back in 2010. A big back like Gerhart has to run under a 4.6 to even be considered in the first two rounds. I'm really not sure what decision Ryan Mathews will make. He'd be smart to enter the draft because he's had such an awesome year, but he's said time and time again that he wants to return and graduate from Fresno State. Mathews has proven that he can carry his team, a lot like Gerhart. Durability issues are the main knock on him. I would love him to stay at Fresno, but I'd understand if he left early. Coach Pat Hill will urge him to go pro...I can guarantee that. CJ Spiller has to be the draft's top back. He's such a versatile player. Spiller's a track guy, so he'll run an extremely fast 40...probably something in the 4.3s. Spiller needs to play in RBBC (running back by committee). Jonathan Dwyer is Toby Gerhart's biggest competitor. They are both power back prospects. Dwyer has a lot more upside, so he'll more than likely get drafted before Gerhart.
The problem I'd have with drafting Gerhart is that this is the first season of his college career that he's avoided injury. I just get the feeling that once the size and speed of defenders are greater and more consistent, he's going to have trouble staying healthy. If his durability problems are behind him, he'll be a great back for some team. Just not the Jets.
The same goes for Ryan Mathews. There's no doubt in my mind that Gerhart and Mathews can be great backs in the NFL, they just have to stay on the field.
Good point but the blocking schemes in his behalf are also going to be better also, allowing him to be more productive.
Would anyone object to picking Spiller in the 1st round? I mean if he can be like a Chris Johnson type RB I don't think there is anyway you don't pick him
If we can trade Leon Washington for a 2nd or a 3rd then I'd be all for it. I think CJ Spiller would pair up nicely with Thomas Jones/Shonn Greene. With Washington on the roster, Spiller is most definitely not needed. We definitely have to address the defensive line in this draft, but if Cody, Heyward, and Dunlap are all gone when we're on the clock, Spiller would definitely be a nice pickup. Spiller can return kicks/punts, catch the ball very well, and he's a threat to score every time you hand him the ball. He's without a doubt the most versatile player in 2010's draft.
We have too many other needs. We have been ignoring the o/d-line for far too long. We have three very good running backs right now.
That guy is good... I saw him in HS and thought he might be over hyped but he is doing it on a collegiate level. I give him respect...
he didnt do much at Mich and transferred to Rice. good luck with that. then again Rich Rodriguez is a bum. so who knows.
Sam McGuffie actually didn't play at all this year. He transferred from Michigan to Rice and had to sit out a year due to eligibility rules - he won't lose a year though because of a redshirt. I'm pretty sure he's going to completely dominate C-USA.
yeah i think Mich was a bad fit for him, playing at Rice will de-legitimize him for alot of people but C-USA he should dominate long as Rice puts a reasonable OL in front of him.
What?! The Great White Hope ran for almost 500 yards and 3 TDs in an offensive system that didn't have all of it's parts yet. Sam McGuffie was one of the few playmakers on that shitty 2008 Michigan team.
