do we all forget about Elam giving up the big play? I know he's made some clutch turnovers against the Bills, but he also was a liability in coverage.

    Jets Benching Kerry Rhodes

With the Jets losing six of seven games, it's time for someone to take the blame.

And possibly because benching rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez could jeopardize G.M. Mike Tannenbaum's job security, coach Rex Ryan is getting started on the other side of the ball.

Per FOX's Jay Glazer, the Jets are benching safety Kerry Rhodes, replacing him with Eric Smith.

In April 2008, the Jets signed Rhodes to a five-year, $33.5 million contract extension, with $20 million guaranteed.

Smith is in the final year of his rookie deal, making only $535,000.

Yeah, but he was a very good role player. And quite honestly, this team is lacking a few solid role players. You need players that might not be superstars, but when the team really needs a play, they come up with a huge play unexpectedly. Elam may have sucked in coverage, but he is responsible for winning both of the Bills games last year. I'm not saying I want Elam back, but this team needs players like Elam on their team

yeah, eric smith has done just that.

he's taken guys like Kevin Faulk away in week 2 and rendered TE's useless as well.

we were singing his praises the way we were singing Elam's last year.

and another guy that has been an awesome role player is Mike "give me that fumble you fuck" DeVito.

Boy is this ever going to put a wrinkle in Kerry's "master plan" of going to the pro-bowl?

Maybe Smith is the guy who ends up exceling in Rex's system?

Plus maybe Billicheat knew something way back when he said that Kerry wouldnt even make his team?

he's a weak coverage guy and not very atheltic, but he would never get run over by Wes Welker.

Me too. Eric has been one player who is playing better this year than before.

The only bad thing about this situation is that he will have to be given a new and more expensive contract, Rhodes will probably have to be traded (I don't buy this light a fire stuff at all - I don't think you can turn it off and on at that level0, and they'll be a man short back there, having to make another move.

Rhodes's contract will mean the Jets won't get much for him, too.

    Oh well.

    NY stands for Next Year.

I agree with the potential trade. I dont think Rex is the kinds of guy thats going to be real supportive of this douche worrying about becoming a model and actor.

Well, you are adding another factor, but I very much agree with you on it. Rhodes I think has shown himself not to be the kind of safety Ryan wants. Leonhard is, and Rhodes may have more innate talent than Leonhard, but when it comes to what this team needs back there, Rhodes is no Leonhard.

This probably means Rhodes is gone this off season.
