When yer asked to put pressure on the QB, specifically on a blitz, it doesn't matter. One has shown he can get in the QB's face, and one hasn't.

They need to try playing Gholston at DE or in a 3-technique more.. He does not have the instincts or aggression to be an LB in the NFL.. He can hold his gaps and take on 2 blockers with his strength. That fits the 3-4 DE template for me, yeah he is not ideal size, but his strength and power are that of a bigger man.. Maybe we should have him put on a little extra weight and try him at his natural position. Marques Douglas is alright, but he's not a starting caliber player for a top 10 3-4 defense (yeah, were not that ; But we do aspire to be) .. What do you guys think?

When Gholston is ready to go after his injury I would like to see him get a lot of playing time during these last 6 games. What do we have to lose?

I've seen this idea thrown around and it's not terrible. The problem is that it's easy to say to add 30-40 lbs to the guy and play DE, but the reality is that it doesn't generally work. Remember when we had Ellis bulk-up and play DT? That was a disaster.

At this point Gholston should play every defensive snap as well as special teams and offense. He should do laundry, handle equipment and do wake-up calls.

Haha, and they also had Kris Jenkins and Leon Washington.

If you really want to piss people off you could tell them that we have won only a single game since we traded for Braylon Edwards.

We've also only won 1 game since Pace returned. That guy must be bringing us down. Maybe we can trade Edwards and Pace to Cleveland to get Stuckey and Trusnik back.

GHolston hasn't done shit all year... top pick and he can't even get a tackle...joke...total joke and I was really high on him...you can't have the demeanor of librarian and try to play LB in the NFL...just doesn't work..

Injuries to Lowery (on a return) and Strickland (vicious hit on a screen) forced Pope and Coleman to play extensively.

If this keeps up, Justin Miller will be in the defensive backfield soon. Ouch!

Actually I think you may be on to someting there. While I was already aware that the wheels fell off once Edwards came in and Pace came back, I did not make the "bad Karma" connection with respect to trading Trusnik to a shit-ass team after he almost single-handedly won us a game.

The team is being punished for doing wrong by Trusnik

People have said Trusnik did more for the team then give us that special teams spark. I think I read somewhere him or his wife or someone used to make the team cookies or something. I believe those cookies were full of steroids and thats why we are losing. We need to trade back for trusnik or atleast offer his wife a job as team baker.

I thought Gholston had some bright spots taking up blockers (sometimes 2) early on.. I do not like his tackling or his agility, however the man is about as strong as it gets (I think he set a bp record @ the combine) .. So if someone was to play 3-4 DE undersized, I bet he could do it.. Pursuit, coverage and tackling in the open-field are his most glaring weaknesses, so I say use him at DE because it's the logical thing to do.. It takes a special type of attitude to be an effective LB, some have it and some do not.. It's an instinct, an attitude that Vernon just does not have.. SO USE THE MAN at the position he was drafted at, the position where he excelled in the past.. This may be a poor analogy, but: Is John Vilma a good LB, yes. Is John Vilma good in a 3-4 defense? Nope, he is not big enough. The point is that sometimes you are better off using the player in the way that got them recognized in the first place rather than trying to teach them something that (so far) they have not shown the equipment for. I would hate to see him go somewhere else and become an effective NFL player simply because we failed to realize how he can be effective in this league. The responsibilites of a 3-4 end in the NFL: Hold your gaps, be strong at the point of attack and give your blocker all he can handle, or take up two blockers.. These are things that I feel Vernon can do effectively, as opposed to learning to cover, pursue etc... I am not ready to give up on him until he is tried at the position he was drafted at doing what he's best at.

i don't see this. thomas is a good player against the run, gholston is terrible in that respect. i'd like to see thomas still in there if the alternative is gholston.

I agree... right now he's 264... if he can get to like 275 with the strength he has he can come in handy at DE.

A very low bodyfat 264, so he could easily put on more weight. At the combine he out bench-pressed the 320 lb linemen at 255 lbs so he is strong beyond his size.. From what I saw in the early games he was plenty strong against his blockers even at a weight disadvantage. What were doing with him not is NOT WORKING, we need give him the correct role. Or atleast experiment with it THIS YEAR, while were developing our other young players..
