I have to agree with him. The Pats have had the luxury to draft BPAs in the league since their starters were solid at almost all the positions. Their recent drafts have been avg at best n don't argue about it without looking at it first. Apart from the Gholston pick, the last 4 yrs drafts have been great for us n all that even after trading away picks for other vets or moving up in draft.

U don't see 7 guys on a teams roster from a draft 4 yrs later. You would see about 3-4 guys, with maybe 2 or 3 starters at best. Jets have picked a few starters every draft class ALONG with trading for players. Tanny has been one of the best in the NFL n I don't even know how one can blame him. Just see how many quality starters we have brought in in the last 4 yrs.

IMO - the jets are still "suffering" from the less than stellar drafts of the early to mid 2000's......

granted we are several years removed and players come and go but b. thomas (2002) is the only 1st day pick from 2001 - 2005 to really make any contribution to this team on a long term basis. yes there was vilma, moss, drob - but there departures just created vacancies that took away from other needs.

we have made much better progress with 1st day picks from 06 - 09 but at the expense of much needed depth at certain spots.....

add to that the noose of trying to find a franchise QB every year from 05 on and no one should be surprised at the state of the current roster.

I take it that reading comprehension isn't your strong suite as that is just what I said.

Now tell me how does the drafting for depth worked out for New England? Most of their draft picks aren't with the team anymore or even in the league anymore.

It's easy to build depth when you have won three super bowls this decade, you have a GOOD team to build around.

You need talent to establish depth behind it, depth is useless if the guys in front of the backups are terrible.

We've gotten some of our best players this way, Harris, Revis, Jenkins, Edwards, Dustin Keller....need I go on?

    BINGO

it's hard to build "depth" when there are glaring holes at starting positions.

1st rd picks are supposed to be impact players as they carry a financial chunk of the team

02 - B. Thomas - nothing more than a serviceable role player. followed up with Jon McGraw in rd 2

03 - Drob - nothing more than a serviceable role player at the expense of 2 1st rd & a 4th rd picks

04 Vilma - good player, but no longer with team

05 Nugent & Doug Jolley - are you freakin kidding me?!?!

this also doesn't include the neglect of linemen that practically forced their hand in the 06 draft and overpay for someone like Faneca.

The front office believes we need 1 maybe 2 players to be a very good team but that aint the case. We need atleast 3-4.

Many who offer analysis of what the team needs seem to leave out a decent corner to play opposite Revis. Many teams the Jets face do not have two very good to excellent receivers, but the Pats sure do. Welker's absence in the first game was huge. It was mindboggling seeing how ineffective the Jets D was in handling him yesterday. Was it that despite some up and down and decent play at #2 Cb, yesterday they got exposed?

I think #2 CB needs to be considered when talking about future needs.

the way he is playing and the oversized contract, rhodes wouldn't fetch us a cup of java, never mind much of a draft selection!!

    Except.....

In 2007, the Pats got Welker and Moss for the 2nd/4th/7th round picks. Also, some of those picks were traded to stockpile future picks like 4 2nd round picks in 2010.

The draft is not a "either" proposition. It is a "both". The draft serves only to improve the team. That comes through picking players or getting proven players.

Here is a question. Would you rather have Meriweather/Welker/Moss than your class?

Revis is good... but... would rather have Chung/Whilite/Bulter through these drafts?

Every other team in the NFL builds somewhat through the draft (maybe except the Redskins - but do we REALLY want to model ourselves after them). It's time we get to it also.

Agreed 100% with the OP. We cannot afford to keep trading away picks, not even on draft day. What is the purpose of jumping up to grab Greene if we only use him for three plays/game?

    I agree!

I think right now we are getting to the point where we have enough talent on the team to start drafting BPA instead of trading for "veteran players".

But up to now we needed that... sure maybe we colud've done some trades better but overall I'm pleased with their outcome. With this draft we finish fixing up the team and from the next one we draft for depth.

Not a fan of Tanny either, hated him bringing Favre in last year and dumping Mangini, but so far this year both of those moves seem like the right ones.. I do think that he is too quick to get the 'names' instead of the players. Not unlike Danny Snyder or Jerry J (two people who run their teams from the wrong point of view) .. The Patriots always bring in those who fit a certain 'role' and they seem to know exactly what their looking for and how to get it CHEAP.. They always get rid of their older players to dummy teams (See Richard Seymour, they got rid of him at a point in his career where he's still good and valuable to other teams) for more draft picks and use them well to get players like Mayo and Wilfork/Samuel (a few years back) .. Every year they trade for higher picks and end up RE-LOADED, EVERY YEAR. They don't go for big names, unless they know the talent is there and wants to win NOW (Moss, C.Dillion) . Everyone else is homegrown and fits into their role.. I feel like here, not unlike Washington, Oakland and Dallas we bring the names in and expect them to all get along and find roles for them when they get here instead of having a 'MASTER' plan.. It almost feels like the players are here to sell tickets based on name recognition, and it STINKS.

You cannot compare the Pats to the Jets as it isn't apples and apples its apples and oranges. The Pats lucked on out on drafting a HOF QB in the 6th round back in 2000. Once an NFL team has a franchise QB, filling the holes is actually pretty easy if you have any common sense. Most NFL teams have to spend year after year in FA and in the draft in trying to nail the franchise QB. The Jets hopefully have solidified the QB position and can now concentrate on doing what the Pats do - trading down picks, stockpiling picks, drafting for the depth, etc. That cannot be done when you are constantly chasing the tail of the franchise QB.

Now you may disagree, but look at what the Jets have done over the past 3 years alone in trying to get a QB:

Used a 2009 #1 pick (Sanchez) in exchange for #1,#2, and 3 players

Traded a 2009 #3 pick for Brett Favre

Traded conditional 2010 pick for Kevin O'Connell

Used a 2008 #5 pick on Erik Ainge

Used a 2006 #2 pick on Kellen Clemens

So in the past 4 years, the Jets have used 6 draft picks and 3 players in an attempt to fill the most important position on the field. That basically amounts to 9 out of 28 (in a 7 round draft) of the players - 33% - of what you would expect to draft over a 4 year period.

How can you compare that to the Patriots when they have only used ONE pick on a QB in the same time period - Kevin OConnell. I don't include Edelman from this year as he isn't even playing QB. Previous to 2006, the Pats only drafted Cassel (in 2005) going back to 2003.

You need to get your facts straight before trying to compare what has been done in the past with the Jets.

Way to go "retard" at the first instance. I tried to bring the concept to the lowest IQ possible and it just flies over your head. Let's review:

The draft is there to make your team better.

You can make your team better by drafting good players or by trading away picks for good players.

You don't make a team better by drafting bad players or trading picks for bad players.

The Jets spend picks and players to get a "QB" while the Pats "only" get Cassel in the 7th round.

Who did a better job of trading and drafting? Did trading picks to get Moss/Welker have any bearing on helping Cassel?

Klecko - Kick-ass post and perfectly sums up the state of the Jets regarding picks and trades.

I think Tanny has does a good job with the picks he has brought in. The only obvious bust is VG under Tanny as GM (as far as I can remember).

If Mark is the QB for the next 7 - 10 years then the Jets should be on the road to recovery for building depth and solid starters.

I have two major concerns for the off season:
Braylon Edwards signing a long term contract
    Thomas Jones sticking around.

I am hoping both come through. Time will tell.

Oh and patfaninsteelercountry - on you quote: "Who did a better job of trading and drafting? Did trading picks to get Moss/Welker have any bearing on helping Cassel? "

The answer is yes! Look how great a year Matt Cassel (insert sarcasm) is having with a shitty team all around him. When you build up a good team and every spot on the roster is a top notch player, then the Pats could plug in Ryan Leaf if Brady went down and he would be stellar too....

Thanks dirtydumbazz for proving my point. Having a "franchise" QB is not enough. You also have to surround him with SOME talent. Notice last week's game in KC when a reasonable receiver like Chambers was combined with Cassel.

The Patriots passing attack was built with a combination drafting and trading picks. The quality of the transaction determines success not the type of transaction.

No wonder they are the J-E-T-S. A-I-R-P-L-A-N-E is wayyyyyy to big for the fanbase.

So now you want to insult our intelligence. Go somewhere else you fucking troll. Being a Pats fan doesn't make you more intelligent than everyone else. How about adding to the conversation without being a troll?
