I've seen a few times on this board where people claim it's obvious that Lito will be gone after the season. I must say, I don't get why. He missed some games, and as a result, the draft pick compensation to the Eagles will be lower, which is good. I don't know what his contract status is exactly, but I don't imagine it's anything that can't be worked out. And when he's been on the field, he's played pretty strong football. I don't know about anybody else, but watching Tory Holt play Dwight Lowery for a chump made me sweat. Lito's a good player, he doesn't get turned around like that, and I suspect Tory being bottled up later in the game had a lot to do with Lito getting back on the field (although who knows, maybe a review of the tape would show it was Lowery not sucking that pulled things together). Anyway, I think we can all agree that if Lito's gone, we'd have to get somebody else. And when Lito's been on the field, he's been a good player for this team. So why would you assume the Jets wouldn't hang on to him? Update: Just checked back, and yea, the Jets signed him to an extention before the season, which does have a substantial roster bonus at the beginning of next season. We can assume they put that in there in case they decided he wasn't up to the job. So the only reason they wouldn't want to pay him that money is if they don't have faith in him to hold down that starting spot opposite Revis. I think he stays; the alternative is likely a first round pick on a corner, who would get paid just as much and take a few years to get up to Lito's level, so why not keep the vet?
I dont see anything wrong with keeping lito, and because he missed a lot of games we got him for cheap. Dwight lowery should be purely a nickelback that guy gets burnt wayyy to much.
5 mil a year isn't too much money for a productive starting corner. Especially one with proven ballskills, since we're talking about playing across from Darrelle Revis. Next. And before anybody suggests he hasn't been very good, go back and look at the play he got injured on, diving in the endzone to knock away a touchdown pass against the Patriots. Give me eleven defensive players that will sell out to stop a Patriot touchdown like that and I'll show you a happy Jets fan.
That's why. He tends to do that a lot. He's played in 16 games twice, and he's 28 years old. He'll be 29 by next season. This isn't exactly the age when players start getting healthier.
Nothing more than 2/3 mill... especially considering how much he's hurt. Anyways I say let him hit the FA... no one will offer him more so we'll keep him on the cheap (2 mill). I'm still angry we didn't sign Bodden last year :S
You're not going to find somebody who can start 16 games and play solid man coverage for 2 mil a season. For example, thats how much Strickland is making. Ryan is coming from a defense that for years had Chris McAllister and Samari Rolle on the corners. You don't run this D successfully with below-average talent on the edges. If Lito goes, plan on spending our first round pick on a corner, or else spending a whole ton of money getting one in free agency.
Again, we don't even have that in Sheppard. 2/3 Million is all Sheppard is worth, given his injury problems this season.
Strickland is making around 1 mill: http://www.nyjetscap.com/donaldstrickland.html as for Sheppard we can either give him a 10 mill dollar bonus to extend his contract (HAHA to that) or let him hit FA and re-sign him then... How much do you want to bet NO ONE will pay Sheppard more then 2.5 mill? To make things clear... I would like to have Sheppard back but definetly not for more then 2.5/3 mill... otherwise either draft or FA. I'd like to offer him a one year deal and see how he copes with that.
He still has a good 40 time. He'll be in silver and black next season, regretting that decision by week 2...of the preseason.
Lito earns a 10 mil bonus if he's on the roster 2010 or he becomes a UFA. Sure 2010 could be uncapped, but there are plenty of players in their final year(or 1 year away) Mangold, Edwards, Leon, Douglas. Then you have Harris, Ellis, TJ who should see re-structure/extensions. Lito will be released before 10 mil kicks in.
I'm pretty sure that giving Lito the 10mil would also force us to send another pick over to the Eagles.
No, the 10 mil is part of a deal we signed him to after we'd made the trade. Compensation to the Eagles depends only on playing time in 09. My understanding is its pretty much a foregone conclusion that we're not going to give up anything in the next draft. Anyway, the 10mil number isn't that important, its part of a 5 year deal worth 5-7 mil a year based on playing time. It's not a bad deal financially if you think he can stay on the field, the 10mil bonus is just to force the issue. The uncapped year doesn't make cutting him any more attractive because there's no cap hit if you cut him before that roster bonus comes down even under the current cba. I guess if the Jets dont believe he can stay healthy, thats a reason to look elsewhere, but I also don't know where else you look. I'd hate to see us have to bring in and develop a rookie to fill that role; I'd be terrified if we go into next season with Lowery starting, after what Tory Holt did to him. I like Lito a lot when he's on the field. I guess its on him to prove it on the field over the next 7 games. But for what it's worth, I hope he stays, and I'd bet on it happening.
The trade is dependent on both playing time and picking up his contract extension. It was 85% of the defensive snaps and keeping Sheppard that gave the Eagles a 2nd round pick. We're not paying that. However, as long as Sheppard plays 40% of his snaps, we owe a 4th rounder to the Eagles(we get a 5th round pick back). Either way, Tannebaum should not be paying an injury prone, 29 year old corner a $10mil bonus and $5-7million per year. We can find other CBs out there. As for what Tory Hold did to Lowery: 2 catches, 24 yards. I doubt he will ever recover.
From what I can tell, Lowery has improved dramatically from last season. Hes been on the field a lot more then Lito and hes gonna cost us a lot less to keep. It really wouldn't be worth it to keep a player like Lito who is making so much but is hurt so often.
He wasn't matched up on Holt all game. There was one that went for about 20 yards or so early in the game. If you saw it, you'd remember. He had Lowery completely, completely turned around. It was pretty clear Lowery was overmatched. Lowery also had a defensive holding call in the first half. Second half, Lito was on the field, Lowery was not.
You say it like those are the only two passing plays the Jags ran during the half. Lowery is making great strides since last year and he was matched up against a long-time veteran who knows how to make DBs look foolish. Holt may be slower but he hasn't forgotten how to run his routes.Everybody has been burned, and Lito, as I recall, had a problem with Defensive Holding and DPI in the preseason which he hasn't entirely shaken off during the regular season. He's not as bad as he was but he still gets called for it. Lowery will get better, and he doesn't get injured like Lito. I'll take Lowery.
