Lito Will Play but Lowery Will Start at RCB Published: Fri, November 13, 2009 - 2:50pm ET By Randy Lange 11/13 ? Lito Sheppard is ready to restart the Jets phase of his NFL career on Sunday. It?s even possible the cornerback who hails from Jacksonville will be selected by head coach Rex Ryan as one of the Jets? game captains for the opening coin toss against the Jaguars. ?I?m feeling good. I?m anxious and can?t wait to get back out there and hopefully add a great asset to this secondary,? said Sheppard, who?s been battling a quad pull for more than two months. ?These guys have been playing great up until this point. Hopefully, I can come back and continue to add on to that.? And Ryan said today he expects Sheppard to contribute to the mix, except not as a starting corner. ?I don?t think we?ll start Lito,? Ryan said at today?s final news conference of the week. ?Even though he?s practiced fully this week, I don?t think he?s all the way back yet. We?ll evaluate and see how much he plays, but I think we?ll start Dwight Lowery.? Sheppard has said as much all week. Asked how much he thought he might play vs. the Jags, he said Thursday: ?I haven?t addressed that yet. All I know is that I will be up and ready to play. However the coaches decide to work that in, we?re going to go with it. I?m just looking forward to getting back and making sure I?m back. We?ll go from there.? Corners, needless to say, are so dependent on their legs, and Sheppard gave all he had, included the health of his right quad, when he deflected away a probable Tom Brady touchdown pass for Joey Galloway in the end zone early in the second quarter of Game 2 vs. the Patriots. He sat out the next three games, started Game 6 vs. Buffalo but left the game early, then sat out the last two games. As much as Ryan, DC Mike Pettine and Sheppard himself would like to see No. 26 back on the field full-time, there is plenty of confidence in Lowery, who is in line to start for the sixth time in seven games opposite Pro Bowl LCB Darrelle Revis. ?I think Dwight can start on any NFL team,? Revis said. ?He?s a playmaker and we know that, the coaches know that. He has experience and this is only his second year. He?s a talent for us. http://www.newyorkjets.com/blog/posts/1344-lito-will-play-but-lowery-will-start-at-rcb
I thought the percentage for the playing time clause was 85% and the rest of the deal was based on whether he gets the roster bonus in '10. Not sure though, the wording wasn't really clear.
something new was unearthed recently, let me see if I can find the link. EDIT: Found it courtesy of the Jets Blog. They are a damn good site. http://www.thejetsblog.com/page/4/ by starting Lowery, he may never see those snaps. i'd hate to lose another pick in this draft, even if they get a lesser pick back
Nice find. It would be pretty bad to have to give up more for a guy we've barely seen on the field and will likely cut at the end of the year. 40% is pretty low.
I can't find any stats on individual player's penalties. Any idea? I realize he's had some flags in the few games that he played, but it seems like he should get a little more time before getting thrown under the bus.
He got flagged in preseason guys, regular season he played very well in the time he did and was not flagged much at all. I think this is more a positive of how Lowery has played rather then a knock on Sheppard. I believe Lowery has benefited greatly from working with Revis and is a very Headsy player who at times of the beginning of last year looked like a draft steal.
Either you just learned it or were just dying to use it.... Are you watching the JETS games or reading the papers and then posting? because Anyone who says this IMO is totally ignorant on the JETS this season. It happens all the time w/ JETS fans on this board that something happens in pre season or one game in a players career and act like it happens "every time" and will NEVER change their opinion of the player. Fact is Lito had 1 game in pre-season vs the GIANTS where he got flagged a few times. Fact is that Lito has been better than good in every game he's played. If a player makes a mistake JETS fans always turn and hold it against that player for their whole career. "Trade him" or "He sucks" Just like TJ for the last 3 years. Probably the most Consistent player we've had here since Curtis! Yet, JETS fans want B.Sanders on every play. Back to LITO, Leave the man be. He is a solid #2 corner and yes, Lowery is good but aorn Lito is a better option. And if you don't know why then you are not watching.......
