I remember prior the 2008 draft the belief was after Ryan and Jake Long came off the board any of about 6 players were going to fall to us and we had to take whoever that might be. Well that guy turned out to be Vernon Gholston. We possibly could have gone with Sedrick Ellis or reached for Mayo or Mckelvin. Our pick was really going to be between Chris Long, Glenn Dorsey, Vernon Gholston, Sedrick Ellis, Darren McFadden, Derrick Harvey To this point all these guys could be tagged as dissapointments. 2009 Chris Long 20 tackles, 1 sack McFadden 146 yds Sedrick Ellis 15 tackles 1 sack Derrick Harvey 23 tackles 1 sack Glenn Dorsey 28 tackles 0 Sacks Our Boy- Vernon Gholston 11 tackles no sacks. unless we reached for Mayo or Mckelvin it looks like we were going to be dissapointed no matter which guy fell in our lap. Doesn't make the Gholston pick sting any less but atleast it does show that perhaps 2008 was full of guys not living up to potential.
Chris Long and Gholston should be traded straight up, because they would have better success in each others defenses. McFadden is on a shit team and can't stay healthy. Ellis is a DT - do you want him to have 50 tackles and 8 sacks? Those are great numbers for a DT and the Saints are stopping the run - that one fails. Harvey is one i'll give you. He hasn't been impactful yet. Dorsey is another DT- you can't judge them by stats, but by where the run defense is. That whole team sucks. Guess what they all have over Gholston - Games started, or heavy rotation in the front 7. It doesn't take the sting off any less.
Not really since the jet scouts were leaning toward Mckelvin although the jury is still out, though he does look good. What I don't get is why the jets kept him active against the raiders and dolphins only to play him max 5 defensive snaps in each game. I guess they think he can develop by playing special teams, which I don't think is great place to develop a player. From what I've read the jets are trying to keep his playing time down to avoid paying one of his incentives this year. If that's the case then I think they should just deactivate him for a couple games and then reactivate him against buffalo and tampa bay where he can get more playing time and play against easier opponents. Obviously it looks bleak, but we might as well try to see if there is still a chance he can turn it around. By the way I think cutting him next year will come down to woody johnson, does he want to pay the guaranteed money right away and just be done with it, or does he feel its too steep a price? That is the real question.
McKelvin, Mayo, Clady, or Mendenhall would have all been much better picks than Gholston. I remember being against the idea of drafting Clady since he seemed more like a 'Brick-type, smaller, finesse blocker but after seeing his ability to gain weight and stay dominant, I can only think of what could have been... McKelvin would have been my top pick in that draft.
Leodis should have been it. Clinkscales probably hates mangini for overruling him and his team. He's the director of college scouting and has done a damn good job finding guys to look at. Terry Bradway is still here - and maybe he's recommending these same guys... maybe. Mayo would take away Bart Scott, and I wouldn't have a problem with that, because Mayo is younger. Mendenhall wasn't a top 10 pick.
Mayo was taken one spot after us, to the Patriots. If we picked him, we would of been LOCKED at the ILB position for 10+ years. The combo of Harris/Mayo would of been considered the best combo in the league for years and years. It would of been intimidating to rush against us, those two + KJ would of been hell for opposing running backs. It wouldn't of been a reach, and I would rather have a solid inside then Ghoulston.
Pretty much everybody and their grandmother wanted Gholston pre-draft and were utterly ecstatic that we drafted him. I personally wanted either Chris Long or a trade back to select a receiver. Everyone was convinced what we needed was a dynamic 3-4 OLB ala Demarcus Ware/James Harrison to make our defense elite. Mayo was not what we needed, and we all laughed at the pats calling it a major reach at 11, where he was drafted. Turns out they got the guy they wanted and Gholston who in the end was the big reach, he went top 10 based on workout numbers, and his one elite game against Jake Long...
I would take every single player you listed over Gholston any day of the week. What some of those players have, regardless if they end up less talented then drafted, is a heart. Gholston, sadly, is gutless. At this pace, he will probably be the worst Jet draft pick of all time. Blair Thomas fans and Johnny Lam Jones fans....at least these guys gained yards and had some touchdowns. Up to this point...Gholston is perhaps one of the worst top 8 picks in the history of the NFL. He has done nothing. And Im afraid Im being kind.
While I agree with that..we are not the gm of the Jets. We can talk all the crap we want of wanting this guy or that guy now...but from what has come out since that draft about this guy taking off plays and being more of a gym rat then a football junkie....it was our front office to get the info about this guy that we are not able to see. Mangini demanded him. Tanny picked him. This guy is a bust.
pats traded down, picked up Mayo at 10. they didn't stay at 7, and picked mayo in the slot people thought he'd be around.
The Gholston pick makes more than just the front office look bad. The whole fanbase, including myself, felt Gholston was the right pick at the time. We needed a ferocious passrusher, he was the top passrusher in the draft. Shit like this happens all the time, it sucks but what can you fuckin do? There are busts every draft class and Gholston is part of the 08 class.
WW85 and MeanDean both knew this kid was going to be garbage. I think we all loved the numbers and his athleticism. And we needed a pass rusher for the next 10 years because that's what the team was missing. We all didn't heed the warning that he is a soft pussy who doesn't love football.
Count me out of that number, I didn't even want him leading up to the draft. As for Mayo not being what we needed, we didn't NEED Gholston either. We NEEDED a CB to start opposite Revis (McKelvin). We NEEDED a better tackle to replace Clement and more youth on the OL in general (Clady). If I laughed at the idea of taking Mayo at 11, then I'll be the first to admit that I should have been slapped across the face with a gauntlet dipped in molasses and broken shards of glass. There was no way in Hell we were going to get Jake Long with Parcells running a draft for a team that needed OL help and drafting before us. Mayo and Harris would have set us up on defense for years to come. Mayo in college looked like a football player. Gholston looked like a phenomenal athlete playing football against a group of slow Big Ten OL players and soft TEs and backs. Gholston inflated his numbers like Mike Mamula with an amazing draft. He should be wrestling. He should be boxing. He should be throwing shot-put or discus. Anything but football. That was my opinion before the draft and that is the conclusion that I have come to eight games into his second season. McKelvin, Mayo, Clady, and, yes, Mendenhall (I am still very happy with Shonn Greene), were the best picks for us at that point. Even reaching for Mendenhall would have been a better choice. Apparently, most of the fan base also forgot about the Calvin Pace signing as well. I know Pace does not satisfy the "for the next ten years" part but it would have offered us the opportunity to build other spots.
Yeah, I don't remember that first sentence being remotely true. I wanted Kenny Phillips. Up until this career-threatening injury, that one would have been looking pretty damn good!
Players being mentioned that you all wanted other then perhaps Clady, were reaches at 6. The guys who do this for a living said our spot "6" sucked that year because unless we went way outside the box our selections were tied into taking whoever fell to us- mcfadden, dorsey, long, gholston. As it looks now I beleive we would be down on all these players production to this point. We comment on Gholston's lack of heart as we seem him day to day. I doubt anyone in here has watched much of others careers to date. I would take a guess that Mcfadden and Dorsey might be suffering from the same hole in the chest as Gholston. Long has hear perhaps he is step slow for nfl.
something too keep an eye in the next couple years to really rate Tanny as a GM, is to see if he has the ability to go "down" in the draft and take a player we want and pick up extra picks. #6 spot would have fit that bill perfectly. We have proven we can go up to get who we want, Sanchez, Harris, Revis, Mangold, Greene, etc..... Now we need to show the ability to target someone who might be a reach at out spot and move down and still get them - IE Mckelvin, Mayo
