I'll take a defense that gives up very few points and very few yards all day thank you. Who cares if we're low on sacks or rush average. The important thing is that we're limiting the opponents points and opportunities at points when our defense is on the field.
The problem is while we have a statistically very good D, since the NO game they have not exactly shown they are capable of stopping teams with the game on the line. Both Miami games the D was pushed around in a big 4th quarter spot and in the Buffalo game once we blew the FG in OT the Bills drove right down the field on us to win it. That's not the sign of a great NFL D at all. When you have the lead and you have a great D you should be very comfortable that teams like Miami and Buffalo aren't driving down the field on it to get a go ahead score. Up 3 with 3 minutes to go I have very little confidence in our D getting the win.
I knew someone was going to pick up on that. What I am trying to get across is that our defense is good, but not yet great. Great defenses stop Miami on that last drive. A great defense would have had Henne lying on the grass. If the defense could have stopped the Miami rushing attack just a bit better we could have another run. Those things do matter in the long run.
