Lets also not forget it was Keyshawn who essentially shamed the franchise into finally getting its head out of its ass.
Not that I ever rooted against, but I was never a Laveranues fan. Nugent I didn't root against, I just paid a gypsy to turn into a garden slug. I just never thought it would work. My bad.
Definitely, that's why I became a fan so quickly. His book was widely criticized but I thought it was awesome. There was a time when I'd have traded the entire roster except for Keyshawn.
I can't believe nobody's called you out on this... Really??? VinnyT?? From the moment he took over as the starting QB he basically bled Green and white.. And yeah, he threw a lot of INTs, but he's taken us further than any Jets QB we've had since. And for that Monday Night game against the dolphins...that makes him damn near untouchable  But really, why Vinny? Not flamming you, just curious to hear why you couldn't root for the guy... EDIT: But in keeping with the post topic, I'll co-sign O'Donnell. I've always hated Pitts, and I thought signing him was the worst thing we could have done
I actually concur about Vinny. not so much in the 98 season but later on. It was a similar situation to Chad wherein so many jet fans thought he could do absolutely no wrong. W/ all the bad interceptions he threw...it was quite naseauting to hear the excuses. I also never cared for Derrick Blaylock..who was a Bradway favorite that led to the cutting of Derrick ward.
I didn't want to start a fight but I almost asked him the same thing. Vinny even grew up a Jets/Namath fan, gave us the best season most of us can remember and it wasn't his fault when it ended. He is my all-time favorite Jet, probably surpassed Namath to some degree because I was 9 when Namath last played for us. Many of you think I'm a die-hard Chad guy, and I became one, but I was actually really pissed when Chad first came in because I thought Vinny could still play, which he did for a few more years on and off. Regarding O'Donnell, he's a local guy and my parents knew his family long before he went to the pros, so I was rooting for him to do well here, it's a shame it didn't.
Feel free to not feel the way I do, but I'm not confusing anything. I was rooting for the Jets in those days, and I mean exactly what I said - I might have been happy that Gastineau sacked someone, but I also wished it had been Klecko or Salaam who did it, since I thought Gastineau was an asshole (and knew that the idiotic sack dance would follow). The Jets traded Johnson for what I felt was good value, and I was absolutely thrilled when it happened, and hoped that he would never catch another pass in his life. If that is not "difficult to root for" I can't imagine what would be.
^fair enough, if flamboyant stars with big mouths and bigger egos aren't your thing, I respect that. Must make it difficult to root for the current incarnation, I'd imagine.
Chris Ward, tons of talent but an outright big play holding machine. Witht the exception of 98 when he actually played well "Toast" my man Otis Smith. I agree with Stat on Mark, although I did like Keyshawn I thought he was one of the toughest players to wear the uniform so he's persona didn't bug me that much.
I think that the supposed big mouths of the current team are vastly overstated by the media and the message boards of rival teams. I couldn't care less what the coach says. I have no clue what sort of trash-talking goes on on the field by anyone (and neither does anyone else other than the players), so I have no feeling about that one way or the other. I think Bart Scott is pretty much of a jerk, so yes, I'd rather David Harris get a sack than he does, but that doesn't mean I'm unhappy about the sack. I do think Kerry Rhodes has an overinflated view of his own ability, but since he's been pretty much invisible for two seasons I'm not usually put in the position of not being happy about something good he does. That's 2 guys out of 53. Who else has a big mouth and a bigger ego? Sanchez? Jones? Washington? Cotchery? Mangold? Ferguson? Harris? Ellis? Revis? Obviously not. I don't have the slightest problem rooting for this team, and think the constant drumbeat of complaining that they are "classless" from the posters on Dolphins and Patriots message boards is a joke.
Yeah, he was tough to root for. I can't even remember how many big plays got called back because of him. He did get Lyle Alzado to throw his helmet at hm in the playoffs once, maybe his greatest moment.
Erik Ainge. I know he's just a backup, but as Gator fan I have trouble liking the guy from Tennessee. Also he's pretty much a douchebag. Brett Favre - Where to start? He never wanted to be here anyway, and basically manipulated his way out of his contract in the offseason by saying he was going to stay retired. Eric Mangini - Again where to start? Jay Feely - I have a love/hate relationship with. He's a great kicker, I love his athletic ability and what he brings to the team... but he's an ex-dolphin, but moreso he's very outspoken politically and religiously, almost all of which I disagree with. We'd probably kill each other if we were trapped on an island together. He's a great kicker though and I wouldn't want to trade him.
how bout danny woodhead. Hes a media phenom and has accomplished nothing for the team and actually hurt it by letting ginn jr score 2 td's on kr.
I'll just go with our wonderful OL of the mid-80's Mike Haight, Ted Banker, Joe Fields Dan Alexander, Reggie McElroy. with honroable mention to Guy Bingham. Yikes!!!!. With the exception of Fields a 1 time All-Pro, would any team in the NFL in the 80's have picked up one of those guys even as a back-up if we had just out right cut them. Probably not. It still amazes me how Ken O'Brien did not get as many concussions as Al Toon did. He was on his ass in under 3 seconds so many times it just did not seem fair. Oh Yeah! I hated Louie Aguiar..... This years team has to be - Alan Faneca
Why would you have trouble rooting for Faneca? He seems like a good guy and, directly and indirectly, he's a major reason why our O-line has been as good as it has these past couple years. I don't get this whole mindset at all. Are you guys just naming players you don't like? 'Cause if a player's a complete douchebag I might understand, but even if players are bad, I still want to see them play well. As much as I hated JMac for sucking so much cock, he was a Jet so I still wanted to see him go out there and play well each week.
Boomer Esiason. Jets finally decided to try to build a team, and then cast off Kenny O, the next best Jets QB behind Namath because Coslet is a jagoff. Then he throws two crucial picks in the fake spike game.
It's a tie--Kyle Brady and Anthony VanDyke--Both real high Kotite picks when tons of better guys were still available--Kotite played too much football as a kid without his helmet.
