It's just little things that I see when I watch the games that show me the maturation of Mark Sanchez. At the beginning of the season Sanchez was tense and excitable when he was calling cadence and looked like a rookie. Players at the NFL level are so tuned into watching the QB that they look at pre-snap body language and can usually tell when the QB is going to snap the ball. It was never more evident (to me) than in the Saints game in which the defensive line had great anticipation on both pass & run plays. But since his body language had calmed down and his cadence calling has stepped up: The Jets have been a much better running team. It's a smooth transition from center to QB to RB that now, more often than before, catches the D off guard a little Just something I noticed and I wonder if others have noticed as well.
I still believe that the running game greatly benefited from back to back games against the Bills and Raiders. They did look good against the Phins too, though. I think Sanchez has matured a great deal all around, though. He has looked much more confident out there in the past two weeks. That could, like the running game's improvement, be a byproduct of playing a bad team (the Raiders) and a team with a lackluster pass defense (the Dolphins). The real test of Sanchez's improvement will come when the Jets play the Patriots in two weeks. But you are right, he definitely does look more comfortable.
yeah its called game experience. he had 16 starts at USC. he needs time to get comfortable in an offense he's been learning for 6-7 months. Schotty doesn't allow rhythm to happen because that would help the offense get comfortable. Which doesn't help sanchez. wait until his 3rd year in the league, when he has his breakout year and kicks ass.
Gotta agree with Pats-Hater on this one. Braylon is probably the single biggest reason for our run game opening up over the past few weeks. I can't say that I've noticed the change in Sanchez's cadence, but regardless, I think Sanchez looks like he still has a way to go as far as getting his mental game together. So far he seems to get pretty flustered when he's either under constant pressure or makes a big mistake (one usually leading to the other) but has also shown the ability to make some great plays in big moments. If he can get more consistent as far as his mental demeanor and not get too discouraged when he makes mistakes I think he's on track to do just fine. The skills are obviously there and he's already had to eat some serious criticism which will hopefully thicken his skin some. And to the OP: Thanks for making a thread title that states exactly what the thread is about - I hope people follow your lead!
Can someone explain what 'cadence' means? Or point me in the right direction. Something that explains what the QB is chanting at the LOS and what does 'hut' mean? Thanks
Its a vocalization Don. A rythym that a QB can sometimes get into which allows the Defense to anticipate with accuracy when the ball is snapped. Think of it in musical terms as perhaps a "beat". Vary the beat and you can vary when the center snap happens. Look at Peyton Manning at the LOS the next opportunity you have. You'll see him vary his cadence and sometimes draw the D offsides. cheers..
The team doesn't respect Sanchez the first 3 games, Sanchez has 3 good games, the running game is mediocre. They do respect Sanchez, he has some bad games and the running game flourishes. It will all come together soon...
Quarterbacks also use their cadence to get defenses to give away what defensive look they are bringing for a given down. People liked the bash Favre, but he is excellent at folling a defense with his cadence.
interesting! very nice observation, i had not thought about looked at or noticed his cadence. but it makes perfect sense explaining some things. we will find out in the coming weeks if it was something like this that helped the running game improve or if it was a lack of talent on the other side... either way very nice observation and i will now have to keep an eye on his cadence a little more/better.
