The Mets have no catcher, first basemen or left fielder. It's obviously questionable if Reyes will be healthy to start the season. That gives you Castillo, Reyes, Wright, Beltran and Francouer. I assume they will bring in a left fielder but you they better find a way to get production from the other two spots. The real issue is the starting rotation. After Santana they have no one. Pelfrey sucks, Perez sucks, they have no 2nd or 3rd starter. The bullpen should be ok. If they are looking to compete this year then they need two more starters, a left fielder and a first basemen.
You better just be stoned when you wrote that post, cause if you weren't your out of your god damn mind. The ones unbolded are fine to get rid of. But the people who you said to get rid of bolded is fucking insane. Trade our number 2 hitter and RBI leader?? No. Get rid of Francouer who actually shows some heart when he plays.......hell no!!
I generally agree with your sentiment, but the one place I disagree is Franceour. He just is not a very good player. Historically, he is a good defender, but he shows absolutely zero plate discipline. In his best year Franceour posted a .338 OBP and .309 this year. To put that in perspective, Castillo, who most Mets fans want gone has posted an OBP over .350 over the last 2 years.
My post was mostly in jest, as the Mets are just a fucking mess. That said, the Mets need to go younger. I would honestly gut it and start from scratch. Thank god I'm not a Met fan.
The Mets once had Bay. They traded him, Josh Reynolds, and the black Bobby Jones for Jason Middlebrook and Steve Reed.
I would certainly hope that if the Mets brought in Lackey and Bay that we would be contenders for the NL East crown again. As long as the team stays healthy that is.
The Mets don't need superstars, they already have them. They need role players and depth. If the superstars stay healthy the team will be good. If not you get this year. Not to contradict myself but I would like to see the Mets go after Crawford. The reason being is that should Reyes go down again or not be the same both of which are very realistic you don't lose that speed at the top of your lineup. He also fills a need. I'd stay away from Dye and Lackey as both are on the wrong side of 30. Lackey has been good but has shown signs of breaking down. No more 4 year deals for pitchers over 30. As far as pitching I'd look at the 22 year old Cuban Aroldis Chapman. My bet is he ends up in New York but with the bad guys. I might even offer Ben Sheets a heavy incentive laden deal assuming he isn't going to make it through the season. Rich Harden is a risky proposition but when on and healthy he is very good.
Agreed...We're close, but we're not there yet. It's a ver difficult team to evaluate because of how crippled we were by injuries; we could win 60 or a 100 games next year and I wouldn't be surprised.
i think we need to sign more than one FA SP. crawford is the top of my wishlist, but i don't see it happening.
One thing I do see happening is that if Omar handles this offseason like a joke I'll be skipping the 09/10 season. I won't watch the team until his ass is canned. If the Wilpons are too cheap to can this ass to save a few million dollars they don't deserve my loyalty. I've never turned my back on any of my teams (I've been a Nets fan my entire life). I'm so fed up with this franchise. I can handle losing.... hell the Mets, Jets and Nets have been losers nearly all my life but it's when you become a joke or a laughing stock I lose my patience. Watching the asses on the wrong side on NY win makes me wanna throw up and the the idea of the Phils replacing the Braves as the owners of the NL East is dam disturbing.
my dream GM hiring would be John Schuerholz. I'm pretty sure he retired, but who knows if we could get him to come back and build up our team/minor leagues..... this offseason, we NEED to stock up on quality bench/role players, as well as solidify our rotation, because after santana, we have maine, perez, pelfrey, and god knows who else, and all of them can be considered question marks as to how they'll perform every 5th day. we need quality guys who can eat up innings.
•The Mets are believed to have Holliday higher on their wish list than Bay, and are also expected to pursue Randy Wolf
the mets, cubs, and jays are reportedly working on a 3 way deal that would bring milton bradley to the jays, castillo to the cubs, and lyle overbay to NY. I'm guessing Overbay would split time with Murphy at first. Overbay hits lefties pretty well, his D is okay, and he has okay power. Overbay/Murph at first is pretty solid while we let Ike Davis develop in the minors. I like the deal. Should this go through, we sign O-Dog for second, sign Holliday/trade for Craw, and sign a pitcher or 2 like harden/penny/garland etc, and things are suddenly looking kinda okay...
Quoted from another person on a Mets forum 5 stages of Luis Castillo 1. Denial - "They'll just let him go after the season" 2. Anger - "They gave him how many fucking years?!?!?" 3. Bargaining - "Maybe if they only bat him eight..." 4. Depression - "Well, there goes another 32-hop groundball through our infield... sigh." 5. Acceptance - "He's going to be here next year. Just two more to go. Hey, he's not even our worst starter."
Out of curiosities sake, who do you guys who want the Mets to pursue Crawford think that they would give up for him? Their farm system isn't exactly overflowing with MLB ready talent, which is what I assume the Rays would want for one of their best players.
