I was going to start a feely appreciation thread. Then the 2 kickoff returns for TD tempered my enthusiasm. Still. He had 2 tackles on kickoffs, and was in on a third. They guy was clearly playing for revenge on the team that cut him. I think they said 55 was a tie for his career long. (and he hasn't had a short career). Its to bad we only think special teams played like garbage. Feely played really well. The first kickoff return for a TD was a little low giving Ginn a bunch of time. However, all in al Feely went above and beyond. Without him that could have been 5 kickoffs retunred for TDs.
Feely is supposed to be playing safety on those kickoffs, not getting right into coverage. Might have cost us the game.
I've been saying this since yesterday. People don't get it. Kicker's job on kickoffs is to play safety. Most kickers won't make a tackle, but even if they get a hand on the returner, they've done their job. All they are supposed to do is slow down the returner if he gets past the coverage. Only possible reason I could see for this was that the Jets had 2-3 regulars out on special teams, and Feeley is known as a good tackler.
One thing I don't like is the trust this CS has in Feely when it comes to 50 yarders. I know we let him kick a 55 yarder, but we also opted not to attempt what would have been like a 53 yard FG in the first half. Instead, we punted, and got a net punt of 24 yards while kicking it away from the 36 yard line. I thought we should have tried that attempt. We have passed up on such distance attempts several times this yr. I understand the wind factor, but u gotta have some trust in Feely, who has kicked really well for the Jets in the last 12+ games.
The second he kicked that line drive I was like.. sh1t, that's not a good kick, it got to Ginn way too quickly... that sucked. YEah Feeley should be a "last line" of defense type of guy, but in the open field Ginn would juke the crap out of him anyway...
