Nady, Melky, Gardner, and Swisher isn't bad. With Posada, Jeter, Teixeira, and A-Rod, you don't need a killer outfield. Nady's a pretty good hitter, though. If Nady won't be back for the start of the season, though, they'll definitely need someone else.
Yep, I know but my point is there is NO ONE behind him. We need an infield utility ala Randy Velarde JIC
I wish they'd give Pena that opportunity, rather than make him an outfielder. He won't hit for power, but he's very good with the glove, and he can get on base.
Intentionally walking Chase Utley? You don't see that very often, although it worked out this time. I sort of see your point, but I think that they like to mention staggering numbers and statistics. The contracts given to maybe the three biggest free agents were record-breaking and may make the casual fan say "Wow! That's a lot of money!", as opposed to saying the Phillies gave Ibanez 30+ for 3 or the Nationals gave Adam Dunn 20 for 2. The Phillies don't have that. Howard makes a lot of money, but he wasn't a free agent signing. They didn't mention Jeter or A-Rod's contracts or anyone that wasn't a recent signing (Damon, Matsui, etc.).
But what can you do? Armando Benitez never should've closed a postseason game, but people feel it's demoralizing or whatever to sit your regular in big spots. You want to tell Cano he can play all season but in Yankee Stadium or Fenway Park in October, he can't play? If the Yankees had a quality backup infielder, what would change? He's not going to play ahead of Cano.
I guess we can talk about how the Yankees haven't hit at all in the World Series, but I think everyone else has that covered. Hey, uh, that Swisher sure looks like garbage and Teixeira isn't earning his money! That better?
