We're going to the Super Bowl! Fire Schottenheimer! Two crazy statements to make after yesterday's game, but significant nonetheless. This team played well through all facets of the game yesterday. A truly complete game. There were some things I'd like to have seen done differently, but overall, a great game. Even against the Raiders. Regardless of the circumstances, even the Giants didn't keep them off the board. We did. And against a QB with more "real" QB talent than their starter. As for Schottenheimer, he went to the ground. That's what was necessary, and that's what he did. I only had one single problem with his playcalling yesterday, and that's what leads to my "Fire him" comment. You don't put your franchise QB in a dangerous situation with no reason to do so. A shotgun on third down in the red zone late in a blowout game? Really? Why not also put a big red target on his chest and a "kick me" sign on his back? It was completely uneccessary, uncalled for, and only put Sanchez in harm's way. Great game otherwise, but just a stupid, stupid move. As for the rest of the offense, wow. How about that Greene kid? Who would have thought that kid could be something? Oh. Wait. That would be me. But more than Greene, I'm putting a huge spotlight on Thomas Jones. I gave a critical view of him last week for his subpar tackle breaking. So what did he do this week? He fought for yards. On most of his carries. Yesterday's Thomas Jones is the player I've been saying he is the past few years. An elite running back who can carry the load. If it takes me insulting him every other week, so be it, but this is the TJ I want to see! Having the tandem of Jones and Greene is going to be fun to watch develop over the next few weeks. Now obviously the elephant in the room is Leon. Argh. I love his electricity, and what he brings to the running game, and especially the special teams. This is a tough loss; though I rank Jenkins pretty far above it. Why? Because this is Danny Woodhead's chance. Yes, that same Danny boy that I was complaining about being on the roster ahead of other RBs before the season. Woodhead can be a special teams star. That's his niche. He's not going to be a great RB or receiver. He's too small, but he's fast, and once his wheels are turning he can be elusive. He'd make a great KO returner. This is his shot to make his mark, and I really hope he makes the most of it, both for him and the team. Oh, and Dierdorf is an idiot. (I know, and the sky is blue...) If you're not going to do the research before the game Dan, just be quiet. Woodhead is not a WR who came in to play RB. As for the offensive line, wow. Callahan deserved that Gatorade bath. Where are the detractors today? Great holes for the running game, and fantastic protection for Sanchize. Speaking of our first-round pick, excuse me Mark, I understand you're hungry, but come on. You know better. Personally, I don't really have a problem with eating a hot dog, but it's considered insulting. Is that really the message you want to send out to your opposition, that when you've had a good day you're going to sit on the sidelines and insult them? Don't make life harder on yourself man. And don't make enemies where you don't need to. (And he knew he was wrong. It's not like he was just eating the hot dog. He was doing everything he could to cover it up.) There was a Clown sighting yesterday! He's shaping up week-by-week, and that's nice to see. I really want to see Cotchery, Edwards, and Clowney on the field at the same time. Wow. Speaking of Edwards, how great has this guy been as a pickup? There is another thread discussing his blocking this week, and his general good attitude among his teammates. The change of scenery worked! I was confident this guy was going to be a huge difference maker on our offense. I'm glad he's working to prove me right. Dustin Keller wasn't even completely invisible! It was nice to see Sanchez looking at multiple targets, though he's still doing too much leading with his eyes. I really noticed on one of the replays yesterday. It's pretty significant. He's got to get out of that habit. Overall, just a fantastic game by the offense. And the number of ground yards these past two weeks is astounding. Now let's keep that up! How about our special teams unit? Every week they impress me, and I expect Westhoff to have them at the top of their game. What an awesome fake punt. It had everyone fooled. I just wonder, if not for that one guy who tackled Weatherford facing the play, how far would it have gone before any of the Raiders turned around? Leonhard ran back punts! I was pleasantly shocked to see it. Interestingly enough, on probably the sport's best punter. Feely let me down on a FG attempt yesterday, but his KOs were improved. He got some real distance on a couple. I'm glad to see that. If he can improve his KOs, that's icing on the cake for me. (I'd rather some more hang time than distance though.) Now how about that defense? This is who they're supposed to be. Raiders or not, a shutout is a shutout. Incredible effort by the D yesterday. I was a little annoyed at the prevent D that allowed the Raiders to get near the goal line, but they held them out. Even without Jenkins, which is encouraging. Speaking of encouraging, welcome back Calvin Pace! Being suspended through week 6 really hurt. Huh? When did he come back? Oh. Well, anyway, that was one helluva game yesterday! That's the guy we expected you to be. Gholston who?! Speaking of Gholston, I read in another thread that he appeared yesterday, and while I tried a couple times to see him, I didn't. Not at all. Unfortunate. I had really hoped that they'd make something of him, but I guess not. I'll still hold out hope, but it may be in vain. So that guy we have. Plays corner. Think his number is 24. That guy's not bad. I mean...is Darelle Revis even human?! This guy sweats talent. It's unbelievable, and makes me pinch myself every time I watch him play that we actually drafted this guy. Let's be honest, how many players have we drafted that were truly this amazing so early in their careers? I now firmly believe that Darelle Revis is the most talented football player in our entire organization. That includes guys who are out due to injury. In the end, this was a great game, but don?t get too excited. This was the Raiders, and we have a very tough game coming up against Miami. We have to keep these wheels in motion. It was really nice to see a complete effort yesterday, now let's see it again Sunday!
Good analysis all around. I think the hot dog as an insult thing is completely overblown but whatever. People will nitpick at anything to find some wrong. Not saying you are, but just those upset by it in general. The fact he was trying to hide what he was doing clearly shows he wasn't interested in insulting anyone, just to eat a damn hot dog. The importance of next week's game can't be overstated... this is as big a must win game as the Jets have seen in years... this game will set the tone for the rest of the season... are going to be on the inside controlling our destiny, or on the outside desperately trying to get in?
Nice thread, Alio, but holy shit with the hot dog thing. It's not like he was standing right on the sideline smothering his dog with ketchup and making happy faces at the Raiders. The guy couldn't eat before the game, got hungry, and didn't feel like eating one of those wax-tasting energy bars. So he discreetly ate a hot dog someone offered him while he was sitting on the bench, and the cameramen caught him doing it. Give that crap a rest.
More hot dog criticism.... It isn't insulting to be hungry. Overall the Jets did what a good team should do, and that is beat down a bad team. No one should get too excited over this, but after the last couple of flops a few deep sighs of relief are probably in order.
sorry but i cannot get that excited about the game. its the damn raiders. a wins a win but are we right back at dominating the college teams and getting dominated by the good teams..... i hope not but with the injuries piling up and all the jets are back to a show me team with me...show me that performance against the fish at home and i'll pop a 6ft boner jil
it was a really great game for the jets yesterday. my biggest concern is the raiders did break off a few huge runs right up the middle yesterday. i am really worried about how easily the dolphins ran it against with big jenx in the game. without jenkins next week could just as ugly for our defense as the last game against miami. i was really happy with schotty and the coaching staff as a whole this week. rex said all week what the jets were gonna do and they came out and did it. no trying to outsmart anyone just playing to the strengths of the team which is exactly what needs to be done. i didn't have a huge problem with schotty letting sanchez throw it late in the game. when you think about the disaster of last week i don't have a problem with letting him try to get another td pass under his belt. it was easy to see how much of a rookie he is on that play he didn't feel the blitz at all an he paid for it. the loss of leon for this team is huge, but i think it could be a blessing for this team in the long run. greene is now forced to get in some work. yesterday was the first time he saw any significant time and didn't leave the field with an injury. now we get the rest of the season to see what we have in greene and it will make for a much easier decision regarding tj this coming off season. i don't even think we need to discuss number 24 anymore. he is the best player we have hands down. the interception was amazing. my favorite play of his was when he got beat on a hitch and go he was completely frozen by the move the wr put on him and he still recovered and broke up the pass. he must be a machine he is solid as a rock.
when have the jets ever beat up on the bad teams and lost to the good ones? in my experience as a fan the jets always seem to play up or down to their opponents skill level. last week in buffalo would be a good example. the jets played right down to the bills level and made a game out of a would be blowout.
Holy shit, does everyone find one thing I write every week and focus on it to the exclusion of everything else, just for the sake of arguing (especially since everyone is always assuming incorrectly anyway)? As I said, I don't have a problem with the hot dog. Hell, I don't care if he eats a whole damned turkey on the sidelines. My only issue with it is that it will be taken offensively by other players. Ray Lucas was mad because in his opinion it was disrespectful. If Ray Lucas, a former player, feels it's disrespectful, I can guarantee you other players will feel the same way. I'm only concerned that he's going to piss someone off enough to come after him more "aggressively" than he would otherwise. Given that our OC seems to enjoy putting Sanchez into play formations that are bound to get him nailed, I'd rather our franchise QB just didn't do things to provoke anyone into taking a cheap shot when given the chance. That's all. It's not "Nathansgate" or any stupid crap like that.
Ray... Lucas... Ray Lucas.... mmmmmm... Lucas... Ooooh.. THAT Ray Lucas... yeah, ummm... who cares? Right now Channing Crowder is telling everyone that if that punk ass hot dog eating Sanchez whips out a dog he's going to pile drive him. Shit ranks right up there with the momma jokes.
Good write up.....the hot dog incident I just chuckled about, the camera people always catch something so I dont get too wound up about it. I know some people were calling for MS to be pulled or he shouldn't be taking risks but he needs the experience. The coaching staff does need to keep it reasonable but he needs the exposure. I will add in that having KC hold the ball for Feely is a good move, I prefer seeing the backup QB doing that job. Puts him on the field and always gives us an option when things go awry.
we just lost 3 in a row, come out with a booming performance, and most are ready to forgive the sins of the past...... we have seen this pattern many times over the last several years and as soon as we are ready to jump back on the wagon it blows a wheel. i can't cite specific examples - go ask some of the regulars on board - but the miami game is a bad matchup for us now that KJ and LW are out. if we handle the LOS better than we did in florida thats one thing but if BOTH there OL and DL handle us in the trenches like a couple weeks ago we are phucked. lets see what happens jil
ukk, you make some excellent points. I am definitely scared of Miami this week. It's obviously not the walkthrough we thought it was a month ago. That said, and it goes back to another point you made, this team didn't play down to their competition yesterday. They formulated a game plan, and they executed it, regardless of the opponent. Granted, it reaped superior results thanks to the Pop Warner group sharing the field, but they did their jobs. At the end of the day, that's all you can ask the guys to do. Play their game plan as flawlessly as possible. If they execute this well Sunday, I think we'll see a different result than that Monday night a couple weeks back.
I'll second what Jil is saying... it's nice to see a blow-out win but it has the potential to be rather meaningless in the long term where the injuries are concerned. I think Jenkins hurts us a lot more than Washington does, but we have a lot of other guys dinged up as well. Looking at a Miami team that nearly took down the Saints. This is no where near a gimme game coming up.
i am plenty worried about the rest of the season. beating up on the raiders is great for confidence but won't get us anywhere we want to go. i was just trying to figure out when exactly the jets have beaten up on lesser opponents and lost to the good ones. usually the jets are blowing seasons by losing to teams they have no business losing to after they have managed to beat a few of the more elite teams.
Then the Jets can sing the five dollar foot-long song while incorporating a dirty sanchez dog somehow.
Yeah, I had forgotten to bring that up, but very good point. I much prefer the backup QB to handle that. Broken plays happen. It will be nice to have a guy who can make a decent pass attempt in the future. As for Sanchez, it's not necessarily that they had him throwing when unnecessary. It's that he was in the shotgun on third down. Why not just put a big flashing sign above his head saying "Come blitz me guys!" Why not take that opportunity to practice a play-action pass?
executing a gameplan perfectly is why we lost to the dolphins a few weeks ago. they had a gameplan that they stuck with and their guys all executed it perfectly. i am hoping that rex will be a bit more involved with keeping schotty from getting to cute with his play calls. its like he just can't help himself sometimes. like yesterday what was the point in calling that failed shovel pass when you are up by such a huge amount? he just loves to try and fool the opponent instead of just punching them in the mouth a few times. we cannot afford to have schotty throw away a drive or two on some bullshit plays he thinks are going to fool the defense next week. the gameplan from yesterday should be the gameplan every week. run the ball until they stop you. of course against a real defense they will probably need to put the ball in sanchez' hands more often, but giving him 3rd and short instead of 3rd and 7 can make all the difference for a rookie qb who stares down his receivers too much
I think how he ate the hotdog also needs to be considered. He was not rubbing it into anyones face. He was on the bench covering it up as best he could. I think if players get rubbed the wrong way by that they are grasping at straws to get up for the next game. But you are right we seem to pick the one thing and harp on it! Good summary! I like to read your summaries every monday!
I don't deny jil's point about it being the Raiders. Actually, I even said as much in my first post. The point is, we destroyed a team we were supposed to beat. We didn't beat them. We didn't play a good game and walk out with a two-TD blowout. We walked into the Black Hole and obliterated them. We gave up zero points. None. There have only been 6 shutouts this year, including this one. It's not easy to keep a team off the scoreboard altogether. We did what we had to do yesterday. As I said, saying that we're Super Bowl bound after yesterday is ridiculous, but it was a very big positive.
