I guess I can buy that...I wasn't alive during the '86 World Series, so the closest comparison that I can come up with is the Patriots/Giants Super Bowl. And for that one night I was one of the biggest Giants fans on campus.
I can only speak for myself but I don't deal with any Philly fans in my day to day life. I am, however, inundated with yankee fans. Something like that might tip the scales to rooting against the Yankees more.
exactly,.....my first inclination is to root for the Yanks in a Phils-Yanks matchup ( I effin hate the Phillies).....but with the a-hole Yankee fan factor, that's sometimes difficult to do........and I have less Phillie fans to have to hear that kind of crap from....outside of Gay-Roid, I have nothing against the Yankees players, but Rollins, Utley, Hammels, Lidge...can't stand em Yankee fans on the other hand (or at least most of em).......
I know what you mean man. I really don't have anything against the Yankees as a team - it's just the fans. The Phillies, on the other hand, I despise. Especially Shane Victorino - my hatred of him is somewhat irrational even by my standards. In the end I am rooting against the yankees less ...if that makes any sense.
FTR, as a Yankees fan, if the Mets and Red Sox met again the WS, I'd prefer that the Mets win ("rooting" for them to win might be a bit much). No doubt. 3 reasons: 1. They're at least from New York 2. I have relatives and some friends who are Mets fans (including my wife and in-laws). Let them be happy every couple of generations. 3.Biggest reason, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck the Red Sox.
Mets and Phillies is nowhere near the rivalry that the Yanks and Sox are so the comparison from Yankee fans isn't really relevant. I still consider the Braves to be the biggest Mets rivalry. I lived most of my adult life in the Philly area and while I love the city I just have too many friend who are Phillies fans. I heard so much shit from them after last year and still am that I just can't deal with that for another year. While obviously it would be sweeter if the Mets kept them from winning back to back I will get some satisfaction out of NY preventing that from happening.
^This is what I'm saying. Anyway, apart from the people like Vision, this thread is a perfect example of why I find it harder and harder to feel bad for the Mets, and why I smile a little more every year when they're home on October 1st. These Mets fans are always talking about shitty Yankees fans are to them. I wonder how often they take a look in the mirror.
I honestly can't say. I want to be able to root for the Yankees, because, you know, fuck the Phillies. But I don't really know any Phillies fans, whereas I know way too many Yankee fans who will be extremely annoying in the event of a Yankees victory. So it's a tough call. Plus, I do in fact dislike the Yankees, and it would be tough to root for them. But then again, back-to-back wins for the Phillies would be too much. I don't know. Do lay off on Mets fans who root for the Phillies though; the Mets-Red Sox comparison isn't really fair as the Red Sox are far more hated by Yankee fans in comparison to the Phillies and Mets fans. Plus, Mets fans would be so euphoric over a WS win that we wouldn't bother wasting energy rubbing it in the faces of Yankee fans (barring a Subway Series or something), whereas since Yankee fans have World Series expectations in place literally every year, they don't experience the same shock, awe, and overwhelming feeling, and would gleefully rub it in our faces. Plus all that 27 championships crap would be terrible; Mets fans would just be happy to win one, history be damned.
If you say anything against the Mets, you are a "typical asshole yankee fan". meanwhile, they throw everything possible at the yankees and their fans. I have never seen such a collection of sensitive jealous marys in my life. You hate the yankees because you have to be stuck in the same town while they have success and your team not as much. Then when a Yankee fan dares even wear a championship T shirt or some shit,he is an asshole yankee fan.
Congratulations, you managed to call mets fans sensitive marys with one of the whiniest posts I've ever seen. It is amazing the Mets fans can't stand you guys when you have clearly done nothing to earn your reputation.
What was whiny about it? i was making a point that in obvious to everyone but met fans. I'm not sure if they even realize how infatuated with the Yankees they are. What reputation? Met fans would see it as wrong if the Yankee fans get excited if they win the WS this year. Any yankee fan seen wearing a shirt, hat or celebrating would be labeled a typical asshole yankee fan. We're not even allowed to be excited about our team around met fans.
That's not true at all, and it's such a sweeping generalization I can't really disprove it. But I don't think Mets fans object when Yankee fans wear Yankee apparel or rejoice in victory. It's when they act like Pats fans. And it should be pointed out the Yankees are probably one of the five most hated teams in all of sports; it's not like it's just Mets fans who aren't big on them.
Ok,but the reason is the success. People who don;t root for the teams that win alot, hate their success. Then they create reason for hating them. It's not like We jet fans haven't found a bunch of reasons to hate Pats fans the last 10 years. We wait for anything, whether it be a video camera or some video on youtube, then we label the whole fan base. it's just the way it is.
I don't really hate the Pats the way some people do on this board--Belicheck is a bit of a douche, but I don't really mind them. They win, good for them. I hate the Yankees because of the arrogant and classless way the organization conducts itself. George Steinbrenner is and/or was just a reprehensible person, and he ran the team the same way the bully at recess ran the playground. Hank is now trying to live up that legacy. Obviously you don't feel that way, and now I'm the asshole for saying that. But I didn't invent my reason for hating the Yankees. I should also point out the Yankees-Mets rivalry is often fun. If everyone were nice to each other, the Subway Series would be pretty boring.
The Steinbrenner thing isn't our fault as fans though. As a Yankee fan, you're not an a-hole for saying that. But of course i don't have a problem with it because it has brought the yankees success, and honestly,i get tired of teams griping about it because nothing is stopping them from either spending like the Yankees,or selling the team to someone who will. The Sox and mets are not too far behind these days. The rivaly is fun. What would sports be without the hate.
Oh, I misunderstood you. I don't really hate anyone's fans. Sure, an annoying comment or two can be bothersome, but really, all fans are the same, usually, and I include Mets, Yankees, Phillies, and Pats fans in that group.
